✧ The Raid of Waṣīf against the Byzantines In the year two hundred and forty-eight, al-Muntaṣir dispatched Waṣīf al-Turkī to the lands of the Byzantines. The reason for that was that between him and Aḥmad b. al-Khaṣīb there was enmity and mutual hatred, so Aḥmad b. al-Khaṣīb incited al-Muntaṣir against Waṣīf and advised him to send him out of his army on a raid. So al-Muntaṣir ordered Waṣīf to be brought before him. When he came, he said to him: "It has reached us from the tyrant of the Byzantines that he has advanced intending the frontier. This is a matter that cannot be ignored, and I do not feel safe from him destroying all the lands of Islam he passes through, killing and taking captives. So either you go forth, or I go forth myself." He said: "Rather I shall go forth, O Commander of the Faithful." Then he said to Aḥmad b. al-Khaṣīb: "Look into what Waṣīf needs and complete it for him." He said: "Yes, O Commander of the Faithful." He said: "What do you mean 'yes'? Rise at once!" And he said to Waṣīf: "Instruct your secretary to keep pace with him in what he needs and what is incumbent upon him until he finishes with it." So the two of them rose. Aḥmad b. al-Khaṣīb continued working on his equipment until he set out, and he selected men for him. With him were twelve thousand men, and at his vanguard was Muzāḥim b. Khāqān, the brother of al-Fatḥ. Al-Muntaṣir wrote to Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir in Baghdādh informing him of that, and ordering him to urge the people to the raid and encourage them to it. He ordered Waṣīf to proceed to the frontier of Malaṭya, and he appointed Abū al-Walīd al-Ḥarīrī al-Bajallī over the expenses of the army, the spoils, and the divisions. When Waṣīf set out, al-Muntaṣir wrote to him ordering him to remain at the frontier for four years, raiding in the seasons of raiding among them, until his opinion should reach him.
