Translation
✧ Mention of several events In this year, al-Muntaṣir appointed Abū ʿUmrah Aḥmad b. Saʿīd, client of Banū Hāshim, one day after the pledge of allegiance to him, to the maẓālim, and the poet said: O loss of Islam when Abū ʿUmrah took charge of the people's maẓālim; He was made trustworthy over a community, yet he is not trustworthy over a camel's dung. Muḥammad b. Sulaymān al-Zaynabī led the people in the pilgrimage. ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad al-Nawsharī was appointed over Damascus. (In this year, a Muslim army in al-Andalus marched to the city of Barcelona, which belonged to the Franks, and fell upon its people. Its lord wrote to the king of the Franks seeking reinforcements, and he sent him a large army. The Muslims sent for reinforcements, and aid came to them. They besieged Barcelona and fought a fierce battle, capturing its suburbs and two of the city's towers. Many of the polytheists in it were killed, and the Muslims were safe and returned having taken spoils. In the year 247 AH, al-ʿAbbās marched to Syracuse and took spoils, then marched to the caves of Qarqanah, but fell ill that day and died three days later, on the third of Jumādā al-Ākhirah. He was buried there, but the Byzantines exhumed him and burned him. His governorship had lasted eleven years, and he had persisted in jihad in winter and summer, raiding the land of Calabria and taking it, settling Muslims there.)
