He heard Ḥuṣayn b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and Maʿmar b. Rāshid. Ibn Rāhawayh related from him. Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Khuzāʿī He died in this year. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn b. Muṣʿab, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Khuzāʿī. Al-Maʾmūn had appointed him over Syria for war and land tax. He was one of the most generous men. He set out from Baghdād to it. He had been granted the land tax of Egypt for one year. He opened it and ascended the pulpit, and he did not descend until he had bestowed all of it, which was three thousand thousand dinars or thereabouts. He remained in Syria until he died. The poet Muḥallim b. Abī Muḥallim said, on the authority of his father: I set out with ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir to Khurāsān at the time when he set out. I was riding beside him and conversing with him at night. When we reached al-Rayy, we passed through it at dawn. I heard the voices of birds, turtle doves and others. ʿAbd Allāh said to me: How excellent is Abū Kathīr al-Hudhalī when he says: Alā yā ḥamāma al-ayki ilfuka ḥāḍirun wa-ghuṣnuka mayyādun fa-fīma tanūḥu Then he said: O Abū Muḥallim, does anything occur to you on this? I said: May God prosper the amir, my age has grown great and my mind has become weak, but perhaps something will occur to me. Then something occurred to me, and I said: May God prosper the amir, something has occurred to me. Will you hear it? He said: Give it. So I said: Afī kulli ʿāmin ghurbatun wa-tarawwuḥun amā lil-nawā min wanyatin fa-nurīḥu Laqad ṭalaḥa al-baynu al-mushittu rakāʾibī fa-hal yablughunī al-baynu wa-huwa ṭalīḥu Wa-dhakkarani bil-Rayyi nawḥu ḥamāmatin fa-nuḥtu wa-dhū al-shajwi al-ḥazīni yanūḥu ʿAlā annahā nāḥat wa-lam tadhar damʿatan wa-naḥat wa-asrābu al-dumūʿi sufūḥu Wa-nāḥat wa-farkhāhā bi-ḥaythu tarāhumā wa-min dūni afrākhī mahāmihun fayḥu ʿAsā jūdu ʿAbd Allāhi an yaʿkisa al-nawā fa-nulqiya ʿaṣā al-taṭwāfi wa-hiya ṭarīḥu He said: Then he said: O boy, make the camels kneel. No, by God, I will not let a single hoof or sandal go with me until you return to your young ones. How many verses are there? I said: Six. He said: O boy, give him sixty thousand, and a mount and clothing. I bade him farewell and departed. Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿUbayd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. [Abī] Ṭāhir said: My father related to me: When ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir went out to the Maghrib, his secretary Aḥmad b. Nuhayk was with him. When he alighted at Damascus, many gifts were presented to Aḥmad b. Nuhayk along his route and in Damascus. He used to record everything that was given to him on a sheet and hand it to a treasurer of his. When ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir alighted at Damascus, he ordered Aḥmad b. Nuhayk to come to him early in the morning with a piece of work he was preparing. He ordered his treasurer to bring out to him a sheet containing the work he had ordered to be brought out and to place it in the miḥrāb before him so that he would not forget it at the time of his riding before dawn. The treasurer made a mistake and brought out to him the sheet containing the record of what had been given to him. He placed it in the miḥrāb. When Aḥmad b. Nuhayk had prayed the dawn prayer, he took the sheet from the miḥrāb and put it in his boot. When he entered upon ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir and he asked him about what he had previously ordered to be brought out, the work he had commanded, he took out the scroll from his boot and handed it to him. ʿAbd Allāh [b. Ṭāhir] read it from beginning to end and examined it. Then he rolled it up, handed it to Aḥmad b. Nuhayk and said: This is not what I wanted. When Aḥmad b. Nuhayk looked at it, he was at a loss. When he returned to his tent, ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir sent to him, informing him: I have become aware of what is in the sheet. I found it to be seventy thousand dinars. Know that great expenses have fallen upon you in your journey, and you have visitors [and others] with you, and you are in need of treating them kindly. The amount that has come to you does not suffice for your expenses. I have sent you one hundred thousand dinars to spend on the purposes I have mentioned. From Abū Naṣr Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Malāḥimī, who said: I heard ʿAmr b. Isḥāq say: I heard Sahl b. Mubashshir say: When ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir returned from Syria, he went up to the roof of his palace and saw smoke rising nearby. He said: What is this [smoke]? It was said: Perhaps the people are baking bread. He said: Do our neighbours need to trouble themselves with that? Then he summoned his chamberlain and said: Go with a scribe and count our neighbours whom no street separates from us. He went and counted them. Their number reached four thousand persons. He ordered that each one of them [every day] receive two mann of bread and one mann of meat, and from the spices every month ten dirhams, and clothing in winter for one hundred and fifty [dirhams] and in summer for one hundred dirhams. That was his practice for the duration of his stay in Baghdād. When he left, the allowances ceased except for the clothing as long as Abū al-ʿAbbās lived. He said: Al-Maʾmūn said to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir: Which is more pleasant, my assembly or your house? He said: I have not compared anything with you, O Commander of the Faithful. He said: That is not what I meant. I meant agreement in living and pleasure. He said: My house, O Commander of the Faithful. He said: Why is that? He said: Because there I am owner, and here I am owned. Al-Ḥusayn b. Fahm says: ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir would not admit a eunuch into his house, and he used to say: With women they are men, and with men they are women. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir died at Marw, though it was said: at Naysābūr, and it was said: in Syria, from an illness that struck his throat, in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year. He was forty-eight years old [and some days]. Before his death he had shown repentance, broken musical instruments, built the ribāṭs of Khurāsān, established endowments there, displayed acts of charity, sent great sums of money to the two holy sanctuaries, and ransomed Muslim captives from the Turks. The amount he spent on the captives reached two thousand thousand dirhams, [and he left behind much wealth]. He was described as just. When ʿAbd Allāh governed Khurāsān, he appointed Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd al-Ṭāhirī as his deputy in Naysābūr. He built a house, and its wall jutted into the road. When ʿAbd Allāh arrived there, he gathered the people and asked them about the conduct of Muḥammad. They were silent. One of those present said: Their silence indicates his bad conduct. So he dismissed him and ordered him to demolish what he had built in the road. He used to say: Knowledge should be offered to its people and to others, for knowledge is too protective of itself to pass to those unworthy of it. He used to say: The fatness of the clever and the nobility of remembrance never come together. He had boon companions, among them al-Faḍl b. Muḥammad b. Manṣūr. One day he summoned them, and they came. Al-Faḍl was late, then he came. He said to him: You were slow in coming to me. He said: I had people with needs, and I wanted to enter the bath. (ʿAbd Allāh ordered him to enter his bath.) ʿAbd Allāh brought out the petitions that concerned him and signed all of them with approval and returned them, and al-Faḍl did not know. He came out of the bath, and they occupied themselves for the rest of the day. The petitioners came to him early. He apologised to them. One of them said: I want my petition. He brought it out and looked at it, and he saw ʿAbd Allāh's handwriting on it. He looked at all of them and saw his handwriting on them. He said to his companions: Take your petitions, your needs have been met. Thank the amir, not me, for I had no part in it. ʿAbd Allāh was a man of letters and a poet. Among his poetry: Ismu man ahwāhu ismun ḥasanun fa-idhā ṣaḥḥaftahu fa-huwa Ḥasan Fa-idhā asqaṭta minhu fāʾahu kāna naʿtan li-hawāhu al-mukhtazan Fa-idhā asqaṭta minhu yāʾahu ṣāra fīhi baʿḍu asbābi al-fitan Fa-idhā asqaṭta minhu rāʾahu ṣāra shayʾan yaʿtarī ʿinda al-wasan Fa-idhā asqaṭta minhu ṭāʾahu ṣāra minhu ʿayshu sukkāni al-mudun Fassirū hādhā fa-lan yaʿrifahu ghayru man yasbaḥu fī baḥri al-fiṭan He said: This name is the name of Ṭarīf, his ghulām. He was among the most generous of people with wealth, along with knowledge, understanding and experience. The poets composed many elegies for him. Among the finest that was said about him and about the governorship of his father Ṭāhir is the saying of Abū al-Ghamr al-Ṭabarī: Fa-ayyāmuka al-aʿyādu ṣārat maʾātiman wa-sāʿātuka al-ṣaʿibātu ṣārat khawāshiʿā ʿAlā annanā lam naʿtaqidka bi-Ṭāhirin wa-in kāna khaṭban yuqliq al-qalba rātiʿā Wa-mā kunta illā al-shamsa ghābat wa-aṭlaʿat ʿalā ithrihā badran ʿalā al-nāsi ṭāliʿā Wa-mā kunta illā al-ṭawda zāla makānuhu wa-athbata fī mathwāhu ruknan mudāfiʿā Fa-lawlā al-tuqā qulnā tanāsakhtumā maʿan badīʿay maʿānin yafḍulāni al-badāʾiʿā (And it is long.) Among his excellent poetry: Ightafir zallatī li-tuḥriza faḍla al-shukri minnī wa-lā yafūtuka ajrī Lā takilnī ilā al-tawassuli bil-ʿudhri laʿallī an lā aqūma bi-ʿudhrī And among his poetry also is his saying: Naḥnu qawmun tulīnunā al-ḥadaqu al-nujlu ʿalā annanā nulīnu al-ḥadīdā Ṭawʿa aydī al-ẓibāʾi taqtādunā al-ʿīnu wa-naqtādu bil-ṭiʿāni al-usūdā Namliku al-ṣayda thumma tamlikunā al-bīḍu al-maṣūnātu aʿyunan wa-khudūdā Tattaqī sukhṭanā al-usūdu wa-nakhshā sakhaṭa al-khishfi ḥīna yubdī al-ṣudūdā Fa-tarānā yawma al-karīhati aḥrāran wa-fī al-silmi lil-ghawānī ʿabīdā Abū al-Ḥasan al-Jawharī, mawlā of Banū Hāshim ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd b. ʿUbayd, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Jawharī, mawlā of Banū Hāshim. He was trustworthy. ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd said: When al-Maʾmūn summoned the jewellers and examined them about goods they had with them, then al-Maʾmūn rose for some need of his, then came out, everyone in the assembly stood for him except Ibn al-Jaʿd. He did not stand. Al-Maʾmūn looked at him with the appearance of anger, then he took him aside and said [to him]: Shaykh, what prevented you from standing [for me] as your companions stood? He said: I held the Commander of the Faithful in too great respect for the ḥadīth that we transmit from the Prophet ﷺ. He said: What is it? ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd said: I heard al-Mubārak b. Faḍālah say: I heard al-Ḥasan say: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever loves that men should stand up for him, let him take his seat in the Fire." He said: Al-Maʾmūn bowed his head, reflecting on the ḥadīth, then he raised his head and said: Nothing shall be purchased except from this shaykh. He said: So he purchased from him that day goods worth thirty thousand dinars. The author said: Aḥmad had forbidden his son ʿAbd Allāh to hear from ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd, because it had reached him [about him] that he disparaged some of the Companions and that he said: Whoever says that the Qurʾān is created, I do not rebuke him.
