Translation
✧ Then the year 228 AH began. Mention of the Muslim expeditions in the island of Sicily In this year al-Faḍl b. Jaʿfar al-Hamdānī traveled by sea and disembarked at the anchorage of Messina. He dispatched raiding parties, and they took abundant booty. The people of Nābūl sought a pledge of safety from him and joined him. Al-Faḍl fought for a period of two years, and the fighting became intense, yet he was unable to take it. Then a group of the army went around behind a mountain overlooking the city, climbed it, and descended into the city while the people of the town were occupied fighting Jaʿfar and those with him. When the people of the town saw that the Muslims had entered upon them from behind, they were routed, and he conquered the town. In it the city of Muskan was also conquered. In the year 229 AH Abū al-Aghlab al-ʿAbbās b. al-Faḍl went out in a raiding party and reached Sh.r.ra. Its people fought him fiercely, but the Byzantines were routed, and he killed more than ten thousand of them. Three men of the Muslims were martyred, and there had been nothing like it in Sicily before. Mention of the war between Mūsā b. Mūsā and al-Ḥārith b. Yazīgh In this year there was war between Mūsā, governor of Tudela, and the army of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, emir of al-Andalus, whose commander was al-Ḥārith b. Yazīgh. The reason for that was that Mūsā b. Mūsā was one of the leading commanders of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and governor of the city of Tudela. Mutual envy arose between him and the commanders in the year 227 AH, as we have mentioned, and Mūsā b. Mūsā rebelled against ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān sent an army against him and placed al-Ḥārith b. Yazīgh and the commanders in charge of them. They fought at Borja, and many of Mūsā's companions were killed, including a cousin of his. Al-Ḥārith returned to Zaragoza. Then Mūsā sent his son Lubb b. Mūsā to Borja, but al-Ḥārith returned there, besieged it, took it, and killed Mūsā's son. He then advanced against his father and sought him. Mūsā came and made peace with him on condition that he leave the region, so Mūsā departed to Arnedo. Al-Ḥārith continued to seek him for some days. Then he marched to Arnedo and besieged Mūsā there. Mūsā sent to Garsiya, one of the polytheist kings of the Andalusians, and they made an agreement against al-Ḥārith. They joined forces and set ambushes for him along his route. He placed cavalry and infantry for him at a place called Balmasa on a river there. When al-Ḥārith came to the river, the ambushers came out against him and surrounded him. A fierce battle took place, and it was a momentous encounter. He was struck in the face by a blow that put out his eyes, and then he was taken captive in that battle. Mention of several events In this year al-Wāthiq gave Ashnās a crown and two sashes. In it prices rose on the road to Makkah: bread reached one dirham per raṭl, and a waterskin of water cost forty dirhams. The people at the standing place suffered intense heat, then rain with hail fell upon them, and the cold became severe for them only an hour after that heat. A piece of the mountain fell near the jamrah of al-ʿAqabah and killed several pilgrims. Muḥammad b. Dāwūd led the people in the pilgrimage.
