✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Al-Afshīn Al-Afshīn, the great commander, whose name was Ḥaydar b. Sāwūs. His reports have already passed: that he was accused of the religion of the Magians, and accused of intending to kill al-Muʿtaṣim and to transfer the kingdom to the Persians, and that al-Muʿtaṣim became angry with him, imprisoned him, and put him in fetters. He remained for a period, then died in this year. It was said: rather he killed him and crucified him opposite Bābak, and that was in Shawwāl of this year. Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī said: He died in prison, and was crucified after that at Bāb al-ʿĀmma in Shaʿbān, and idols that had been brought to him from Ushrūsana were produced and struck with fire, and al-Afshīn was thrown into it, so he was burned and his ashes scattered [and that was in Shaʿbān]. ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. Saʿīd b. Sulaymān b. Nawfal b. Māḥiq ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. Saʿīd b. Sulaymān b. Nawfal b. Māḥiq. He held the governorship of Madinah time after time, and he held its judiciary for al-Maʾmūn. He was the handsomest Qurayshī and the finest of face, and the most eloquent of tongue. He died while he was the elder of Quraysh in this year. He had reached eighty-three years, and he was the last of the descendants of Saʿīd, for they became extinct. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥakam Abū al-Ḥasan al-Marwazī ʿAlī b. al-Ḥakam [Abū al-Ḥasan] al-Marwazī. He heard Abū ʿAwāna, Ibn al-Mubārak, al-Mubārak b. Faḍāla, and others. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and al-Bukhārī in the Ṣaḥīḥ narrated from him. ʿAnān She died in this year. ʿAnān. A slave-girl born among the slave-girls of al-Yamāma, where she grew up and was educated. Al-Naṭṭāf bought her and raised her. She was fair-complexioned, beautiful of face, with a mole, quick-witted in poetry, answering the master poets. A man came to her and said: "Complete: He kept complaining of love until I thought he Breathed from his entrails or spoke" She said: "And he weeps, so I weep out of mercy for his weeping; When he weeps tears, I weep blood for him" Al-Rashīd had sought her from her master, who said: "I will not sell her for less than a hundred thousand." Al-Rashīd sent and had her brought, then returned her. Al-Nāṭifī, when she returned, gave thirty thousand dirhams in charity. When her master died, she was brought to the market, and Masrūr bid two hundred thousand dirhams for her, but a man outbid and bought her, and took her to Khurāsān, where she died. Abū Muḥammad al-Ghassānī al-Azdī Ghassān b. al-Rabīʿ b. Manṣūr, Abū Muḥammad al-Ghassānī al-Azdī. From the people of al-Mawṣil. He heard Ḥammād b. Salama. Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, and Yaḥyā b. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī narrated from him. He was noble, virtuous, and pious. He died in al-Mawṣil in this year. Abū Zakariyyā al-Tamīmī al-Minqarī Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā b. Bukayr b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū Zakariyyā al-Tamīmī al-Minqarī. From the descendants of Qays b. ʿĀṣim al-Minqarī. Al-Bukhārī said: It is said he was a client of Banū Minqar of Banū Saʿd. He heard from Mālik, al-Layth b. Saʿd, Ibn Lahīʿa, and others. He was a learned, good, and pious man. Ibn Rāhawayh used to say: "I have not seen the like of Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā, and he has not seen the like of himself." Ismāʿīl b. Aḥmad informed us, saying: Abū al-Qāsim Yūsuf b. al-Ḥasan al-Tafakkurī informed us, saying: I heard Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Bundār al-Rayḥānī say: Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā used to attend Mālik's session, and his pen broke, so al-Maʾmūn handed him a pen of gold—or a pen-case of gold— but he did not accept it. Al-Maʾmūn said to him: "What is your name?" He said: "Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā al-Naysābūrī." He said: "Do you know me?" He said: "Yes, you are al-Maʾmūn, son of the Commander of the Faithful." He said: So al-Maʾmūn wrote on the back of a piece of paper: "I handed Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā al-Naysābūrī a pen in Mālik's session, and he did not accept it." When the caliphate came to him, he sent to his governor in Naysābūr, ordering him to appoint Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā to the judiciary. He sent for him, summoning him. Some people said to him: "You refuse to attend, but if only he had given permission to the messenger." So he sent him al-Maʾmūn's letter, and it was read to him, and he refused the judiciary. It was sent back to him a second time, saying: "The Commander of the Faithful commands you something, and you are one of his subjects, and you refuse him?" He said: "Say to the Commander of the Faithful: You handed me a pen when I was a young man, and I did not accept it; will you compel me [now] to the judiciary when I am an old man?" The news was conveyed to al-Maʾmūn, and he said: "You knew he would refuse, but appoint to the judiciary a man he chooses." So the governor sent to him about that, and he chose a man, who took the judiciary. He entered upon Yaḥyā wearing black, and Yaḥyā folded up the cushion he was sitting on, disliking to bring him and himself together on it. He said: "O old man, did you not choose me?" He said: "I only said 'choose him,' and I did not tell you to take up the judiciary." Abū Saʿīd b. Abī Bakr b. Abī ʿUthmān says: I heard Fāṭima bt. Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Saʿdiyya say: I heard Fāṭima, the wife of Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā, say: Yaḥyā once rose for his nightly recitation, and when he finished it, he sat reading. Suddenly I heard a clamor, and he said to me: "Do you know what this clamor is?" We looked, and behold, there were soldiers and torches, and they were saying: "The amīr ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir is visiting Abū Zakariyyā." We told him the news. Ibn Ṭāhir had desired to see him, and no sooner had they asked permission to enter than we opened, and the amīr ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir entered alone. When he drew near to Abū Zakariyyā and greeted, he rose to him with the muṣḥaf in his hand, then returned to his recitation until he completed the sūra he had begun. Then he put down the muṣḥaf, apologized to the amīr, and said: "I did not turn away from him out of disregard for his right; I had only begun a sūra, so I completed it." ʿAbd Allāh sat for a while conversing with him, then said to him: "Present your needs to us." He said: "[By God,] a need has occurred to me just now." He said: "It is granted, whatever it is." He said: "I used to hear of the beauties of the amīr's face and never saw them except this hour of mine. My need of you is that you not commit what would burn these beauties with fire." The amīr ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir began to weep until he rose while weeping. Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā died in [Ṣafar] of this year, and he was eighty-four years old. He said: Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan al-Sarrāj the ascetic—and he was intense in worship—said: I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ in a dream as if he had approached, until he stood over the grave of Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā and stepped forward, and a group of his companions lined up behind him, and he prayed over him. Then he turned to his companions and said: "This grave is a safeguard for the people of this city." Five generations of major scholars narrated from Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā. The first generation: Isḥāq b. His age exceeded a hundred years, and he had ugly questions in the principles of religion that he alone held. (And Abū Haytham al-Rāzī the grammarian, and he was learned in the grammar of the Kufans).
