Translation

✧ Then the year 226 AH began. In it, ʿAlī b. Isḥāq b. Yaḥyā b. Muʿādh, who was in charge of the police (maʿūnah) in Damascus on behalf of Ṣūl Artakīn ʿAlī b. Rajāʾ, who was in charge of the land tax, rose up and killed him, and he displayed madness. Then Aḥmad b. Abī Duʾād spoke about him, and he was released from his prison. In it, Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir died, and al-Muʿtaṣim prayed over him. Account of the death of al-Afshīn In it, al-Afshīn died. He had sent to al-Muʿtaṣim asking him to send someone he trusted, and he sent Ḥamdūn b. Ismāʿīl to him. He began to excuse himself for what had been said about him, and said: "Tell the Commander of the Faithful that my parable and yours is like a man who raised a calf until it became fat and grew large. He had companions who desired to eat of its meat, so they hinted at slaughtering it, but he did not answer them. They all agreed together to say: 'Why do you raise this lion? For when it grows up, it will revert to its own kind?!' He said to them: 'It is only a calf.' They said: 'This is a lion, ask whomever you wish.' They went ahead to everyone who knew it and said to them: 'If he asks you about the calf, say to him: It is a lion.' Every time he asked anyone, he said: 'It is a beast of prey.' So he ordered the calf, and it was slaughtered. But I am that calf; how can I be able to be a lion? Allah, Allah, in my affair." Ḥamdūn said: I got up from him, and before him was a platter with fruit that al-Muʿtaṣim had sent with his son al-Wāthiq, and it was still as it was. I did not wait long until it was said that he was dying, or had died. He was carried to the house of Ītākh, and he died there. They brought him out and crucified him at the public gate for the people to see. Then he was thrown down and burned with fire. His death was in Shaʿbān. Ḥamdūn said: I asked him whether he was circumcised or not. He said: "(To such a place as this,) he only said this to me, while people were gathered, to disgrace me if I said yes. He said: 'Uncover yourself,' but death was dearer to me than to uncover myself before the people. But if you wish, I will uncover myself before you so that you may see me." I said to him: "You are truthful." When Ḥamdūn departed and conveyed his message to al-Muʿtaṣim, he ordered that food and drink be cut off from him, except a little, until he died. He said: When they took his property, they saw in his house a room with a wooden statue of a human covered with many ornaments and jewels, and in its ears were two interlocking stones with gold on them. One of those with Sulaymān took one of the two stones, thinking it was a jewel, and that was at night. When morning came, he removed the gold from it and found it to be something like mother-of-pearl called al-ḥabrūn. They found idols and other things, and the wooden frames that he had prepared. They found for him a book from the books of the Magians, and other books containing his religion. Account of the death of al-Aghlab and the appointment of Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. al-Aghlab over Ifrīqiyah and what he did In this year, in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, al-Aghlab b. Ibrāhīm died on Thursday, seven nights remaining of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. His tenure was two years, seven months, and seven days. When he died, Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. al-Aghlab b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Aghlab took charge of Ifrīqiyah after the death of his father, and Ifrīqiyah became obedient to him. He built a city near Tāhart and named it al-ʿAbbāsiyyah in the year 239 AH, but Aflaḥ b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Ibāḍī burned it. He wrote to the Umayyad ruler of al-Andalus informing him of that, and the Umayyad sent him one hundred thousand dirhams as a reward for his action. Muḥammad b. al-Aghlab died on Monday, the first of Muḥarram in the year 242 AH. His tenure was fifteen years, eight months, and ten days. Account of several events In this year, al-Ahwāz was shaken by a severe earthquake for five days, and with the earthquake there was a strong wind. The people left their homes, and many of them were destroyed. In it, Muḥammad b. Dāwūd led the people in the pilgrimage. Ashnās ordered him to do that. Ashnās was performing the pilgrimage, and he had been given authority over every town he entered, and he was addressed from the pulpits of Makkah and Madinah and other towns through which he passed with the title of emir until he returned to Sāmarrāʾ. And in it: Ibn Ḥabīb al-Hāshimī mentioned that on Monday night, the middle of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, rain and hail like eggs fell on the people of Taymāʾ, killing three hundred and seventy people there and demolishing houses. During that, a voice was heard saying: "Have mercy on Your servants, pardon Your servants." They looked at the trace of a foot whose length was a cubit without toes and whose width was two spans, from one step to the next five or six cubits. They followed the voice, and they kept hearing a voice but saw no person.
