The Year 221 AH

قتل طرخان قائد بابك وَفِيهَا قُتِلَ طَرْخَانُ، وَهُوَ مِنْ أَكْبَرِ قُوَّادِ بَابَكَ، وَكَانَ سَبَبُ قَتْلِهِ أَنَّهُ طَلَبَ مِنْ بَابَكَ إِذْنًا حَتَّى يُشَتِّيَ فِي قَرْيَتِهِ، وَهِيَ بِنَاحِيَةِ ✧ Mention of the fighting of Bābak in this year In this year Bābak engaged Bughā al-Kabīr, and routed him; and al-Afshīn engaged Bābak and routed him. The reason for that was that Bughā al-Kabīr had previously arrived with the money that was with him to al-Afshīn, and he distributed it among his companions, and prepared after Nayrūz. He was sent with Bughā in an army to go around Hashtādsar and to camp at the trench of Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd, to dig it and fortify it. So Bughā marched to the trench, and al-Afshīn departed from Barzand, and Abū Saʿīd departed from Khushsh, both heading for Bābak. They met at a place called Darwadh, and al-Afshīn dug a trench and built a wall over it. Between him and al-Badhdh were six miles. Then Bughā prepared (without al-Afshīn's order), and carried the provisions with him, and went around Hashtādsar until he entered the village of al-Badhdh. He camped there and stayed. Then he sent a thousand men in a forage party of his. Some of Bābak's troops came out against them, seized the forage, killed everyone who fought them, captured those they could, and took some of them. They sent two men from among them to al-Afshīn to inform him of what had befallen them. Bughā returned to the trench of Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd, resembling one defeated, and wrote to al-Afshīn informing him of that and asking for reinforcements. Al-Afshīn sent to him his brother al-Faḍl, Aḥmad b. al-Khalīl b. Hishām, Ibn Jawshan, Janāḥ al-Aʿwar, the chief of the shurṭa of al-Ḥasan b. Sahl, and one of the two brothers related to al-Faḍl b. Sahl. They came to Bughā. Al-Afshīn wrote to Bughā informing him that he would raid Bābak on a day he specified for him, and ordering him to raid on that same day, so that he would fight him from two sides. That day al-Afshīn went out from Darwadh heading for Bābak, and Bughā went out from his trench. He went out to Hashtādsar, but the people had no endurance due to the severity of the cold and wind, so he turned back to his camp and encamped at a place called Daʿwa. A cold wind and heavy rain blew, so Bughā returned to his camp. Al-Afshīn fought them the next day, after Bughā's return, and routed Bābak's companions, seizing his camp, his tent, and a woman who was with him. Al-Afshīn camped in Bābak's encampment. Then Bughā prepared the next day and climbed to Hashtādsar, and found that the army that had been opposite him had gone off to Bābak. He got some of their belongings and baggage, and descended from Hashtādsar heading for al-Badhdh, with Dāwūd Siyāh at his vanguard. Bughā sent to him: "Evening has overtaken us; the infantry are tired, and we are in the middle of a place we know. Look for a strong mountain so that we may encamp there tonight." So he led them up to a mountain from which they overlooked al-Afshīn's camp. They said: "We will spend the night here until morning, and then descend against the infidel, if God Almighty wills." That night clouds, cold, and much snow came upon them, and they woke up with none of them able to descend to fetch water or water his mount because of the severity of the cold. The snow and fog grew intense upon them. On the third day the people said to Bughā: "The provisions with us are exhausted, and the cold has harmed us. Descend no matter what the situation, either returning or going against the infidel." During the days of fog and snow Bābak had made a night attack on al-Afshīn and part of his army, and al-Afshīn had returned to his camp. Bughā beat the drum and descended heading for al-Badhdh, not knowing what had happened to al-Afshīn, but thinking he was in his camp's position. When he descended to the bottom of the valley he saw the sky clear and the world pleasant, except for the mountain top he had been on. So he arrayed his companions and advanced to al-Badhdh until he was where he touched the mountain of al-Badhdh. There remained between him and overlooking the houses of al-Badhdh only a climb of half a mile. In his vanguard were a group, among them a servant of Ibn al-Buʿayth who had relatives in al-Badhdh. Bābak's scouts met them. The servant recognized one of them, and an uncle of his asked him who was with him from his family, and he told him. He said to him: "Go back and tell those you care about to withdraw, for we have routed al-Afshīn, and he has gone to his trench. We have prepared for you two armies. Hurry to withdraw so that perhaps you may escape." The servant returned and informed Ibn al-Buʿayth, who informed Bughā. Bughā consulted his companions. Some of them said: "This is false; this is a trick." Others said: "This is a mountain top that looks over al-Afshīn's camp." Bughā climbed, with a few men, to the mountain top, and they did not see al-Afshīn's camp, so they were certain that he had gone. They consulted and decided that the people should withdraw before night came upon them. They withdrew and hastened in their march. They did not take the road by which he had entered because of its many narrow passes, but took a road that went around Hashtādsar and had only one narrow pass. The infantry threw down their weapons on the road, and they were afraid. Bughā and a group of the commanders were in the rear guard, and Bābak's scouts followed them, being about ten horsemen. Bughā consulted his companions and said: "I fear these may be a distraction for us from marching, and their companions may go ahead to seize the narrow pass against us." Al-Faḍl said to him: "These are the people of the night, so hasten the march and do not dismount until you pass the narrow pass." Someone else said: "The army has become scattered, and they have thrown down their weapons; the money and weapons remain on the mules with no one with them, and I do not feel safe that they will be taken, or the captive who is with them." Ibn Juwaydān was with them as a captive whom they intended to ransom. So he encamped on a strong mountain top, and the people dismounted worn out and exhausted, their provisions gone. They spent the night keeping watch from the direction of the ascent. Bābak came upon them from the other direction, and they made a night attack on Bughā and the army. Bughā came out on foot, saw a mount, and rode it. Al-Faḍl b. Kāwus was wounded, Janāḥ al-Sukkarī and Ibn Jawshan were killed, and one of the two brothers related to al-Faḍl b. Sahl was captured. Bughā and the people escaped, and the Khurramiyya did not pursue them. They took the money, weapons, and captive. The people reached their camp cut off [from each other], at their trench. Bughā stayed there fifteen days, and al-Afshīn wrote to him ordering him to return to Marāgha and to send him reinforcements. Bughā went to Marāgha, and al-Afshīn dispersed the people to their winter quarters that year until spring came. The killing of Ṭarkhān, commander of Bābak In it Ṭarkhān was killed, one of the greatest commanders of Bābak. The reason for his killing was that he asked Bābak for permission to winter in his village, which was in the region of Marāgha. Al-Afshīn had been watching for him. When he learned of his news, he sent to Turk, the client of Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm, who was in Marāgha, ordering him to make a night raid on him in his village to kill him or take him captive. Turk did that, made a night raid on him, killed him, took his head, and sent it to al-Afshīn. Mention of several events In this year Ṣūl Artakīn and the people of his country arrived in chains. Their chains were removed, and about two hundred were carried on mounts. In it al-Afshīn became angry with Rajāʾ al-Ḥiḍārī and sent him in fetters. Muḥammad b. Dāwūd b. ʿĪsā b. Mūsā b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh led the people in pilgrimage this year, and he was the governor of Makkah. In it: a flood came upon the people of al-Baṣra from the direction of the open desert and submerged many houses, and the water rose until drowning was feared.
