Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Mudhakkir said: I heard Abū ʿAmr Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Kindī say: I heard our elders mention that the cause of the establishment of the rule of the house of Sāsān was that Asad b. Nūḥ went out to al-Muʿtaṣim. Asad was handsome in appearance, brave, learned, eloquent, and intelligent, so they marvelled at his beauty, comeliness, and eloquence. The Commander of the Faithful said to him: “Is there anyone braver than you in your house?” He replied: “No.” He said: “Is there anyone more intelligent than you in your house?” He replied: “No.” The caliph was not pleased with that from him. Then he entered upon him again after that and asked him the same question, and he answered with the same answer, and he was not pleased. Then he repeated the question to him, and he answered likewise. He said: “O Commander of the Faithful, will you not ask why?” The caliph said: “Woe to you! Why is that?” He said: “Because no one else in my household has trodden the caliph’s carpet, beheld his countenance, met him with the question he met me with, and was acceptable in disposition and appearance besides me, so I am the most excellent of them then!” The Commander of the Faithful approved of that from him, and his standing with him was strengthened. Then he gave him the choice among the governorships of the districts of Khurāsān, and he chose from them the governorship of Balkh and its environs. When he arrived in Balkh with the caliph’s covenant, he used to deliver the sermon himself. Then he asked about the scholars of Balkh whether there was among them anyone who had not come to him. They said: “Yes, Khalaf b. Ayyūb is the most learned of the people of the region, the most ascetic of them, and the most scrupulous, and he avoids the ruler. There is no way to him because of his avoidance of rulers.” Asad b. Nūḥ desired to meet him, so he assigned one of the intelligence agents to watch Khalaf b. Ayyūb, and said: “When Friday comes, keep watch on Khalaf. When he leaves his house, hasten to me and inform me.” The agent went and watched Khalaf b. Ayyūb until he left his house heading for Friday prayer, then he hastened and informed him. [Asad] mounted, and when he met him, he dismounted from his mount and went to Khalaf. When Khalaf saw that he was coming to him, he sat down in his place and covered his face with his cloak. Asad said: “Peace be upon you.” He answered with a sufficient reply. He greeted him a second time, and he replied without raising his head. Asad b. Nūḥ raised his head to the sky, then said: “O God, this righteous servant hates us for Your sake, and we love him for Your sake.” Then he mounted and passed on. Afterwards he was told that Khalaf b. Ayyūb was ill, so he went to visit him. He said [to him]: “Do you need anything?” He replied: “Yes.” He said: “What is it?” He said: “My need is that you do not visit me when I am ill.” He said: “Is there anything else?” He said: “If I die, do not pray over me while you are wearing black.” He said: When Khalaf died, [Asad] b. Nūḥ attended his funeral on foot. When he reached the prayer place, he removed the black garments and came forward and prayed over him. Then a voice was heard at night: “By your humility and your veneration of Khalaf b. Ayyūb, the dynasty is established in your descendants, and it will never cease.” In another narration: Asad saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream as if he said to him: “O Asad b. Nūḥ, your rule and the rule of your house are established by your veneration of Khalaf b. Ayyūb.” Abū Ayyūb al-Hāshimī Sulaymān b. Dāwūd b. Dāwūd b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās, Abū Ayyūb al-Hāshimī. Dāwūd b. ʿAlī had died while his son was still in the womb. When he was born, they named him Dāwūd after him. Sulaymān heard from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī al-Ziyād, Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd, Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, and others. Those who narrated from him include Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī. He was trustworthy. Al-Shāfiʿī said: I have not seen anyone more intelligent than two men: Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and Sulaymān b. Dāwūd al-Hāshimī. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: If it were said to me, “Choose a man for the community whom you would appoint as caliph over them,” I would appoint Sulaymān b. Dāwūd al-Hāshimī. Sulaymān died in this year. It is also said: in the year 219. ʿAffān b. Muslim, Abū ʿUthmān al-Ṣaffār ʿAffān b. Muslim, Abū ʿUthmān al-Ṣaffār, [al-Baṣrī], a client of ʿAzrah b. Thābit al-Anṣārī. He was born in the year 134, and he narrated from Shuʿbah, the two Ḥammāds, and many others. Those who narrated from him include Aḥmad, Yaḥyā, Ibn al-Madīnī, and others. He was a trustworthy imam, a man of Sunnah and piety. He was offered ten thousand dinars to refrain from declaring a certain man trustworthy, neither saying he is upright nor not upright, but he refused and said: “I will not invalidate a right among rights.” He was tested in the Inquisition (miḥnah) but did not comply. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥusayn Dīzīl said: When ʿAffān was summoned to the Inquisition, I was holding the bridle of his donkey. When he appeared, the statement was presented to him, but he refused to comply. It was said to him: “Your stipend will be withheld.” He said (and he used to receive one thousand dirhams every month): “And in the heaven is your provision and what you are promised” (Q 51:22). When he returned [to his house], his women and those in his house reproached him. There were about forty people in his house. Then someone knocked on his door, and a man entered whom I likened to a butter-seller or oil-seller, carrying a purse containing one thousand dirhams. He said: “O Abū ʿUthmān, may God make you firm as you have made this religion firm, and this [is for you] every month.” Abū ʿUthmān died in this year. It is also said: in the year 219, but that is not correct. Fatḥ al-Mawṣilī, Abū Naṣr Fatḥ al-Mawṣilī, Abū Naṣr. He came to Baghdād to visit Bishr al-Ḥāfī. Abū Naṣr, the nephew of Bishr al-Ḥāfī, narrated to us. He said: One day I was standing at our door when a man approached with dishevelled hair, wrapped in a cloak. He said to me: “Is Bishr in the house?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Go in and tell him that Fatḥ is at the door.” I went in and said: “O uncle, an old man in a cloak told me to tell Bishr that Fatḥ is at the door.” He came out quickly, shook his hand, and embraced him. The old man said to him: “O Abū Naṣr, I remembered you last night and longed [to meet you].” He said: Then he gave me a dirham and said: “Buy four dāniqs of bread, and let it be good, and two dāniqs of dates.” The old man said: “Tell him: let it be good quality dates.” So I brought it to him. The old man said: “Tell him he should eat with us.” [Bishr said: “Eat with us.”] So I ate with them. When I had eaten, he took what remained in the edge of his cloak and went away. My uncle went out with him and accompanied him to the Gate of Ḥarb. When he returned, he said to me: “[My son], do you know who this is?” I said: “No.” He said: “This is Fatḥ al-Mawṣilī.” In another narration: Bishr said: “Do you know why he carried away the leftover food?” They said: “No.” He said: “When reliance on God is sound, carrying it does no harm.” [We have already mentioned a Fatḥ al-Mawṣilī in the year 170, and that is someone else.] Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Mūsā b. Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Mūsā b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, Abū Jaʿfar [ ؓ ]. He was born in the year 195, and he came from Madīnah to Baghdād as a visitor to al-Muʿtaṣim, accompanied by his wife Umm al-Faḍl bt. al-Maʾmūn. Al-Maʾmūn had married her to him and given him great wealth. That is because al-Rashīd used to give ʿAlī b. Mūsā b. Jaʿfar three hundred thousand dirhams every year, and for his lodging twenty thousand dirhams every month. Al-Maʾmūn said to Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Mūsā: “I will increase you above the rank of your father and grandfather.” So he granted him that, and gave him in addition one million dirhams. He came to Baghdād and died there on Tuesday, five nights remaining of Dhū al-Ḥijjah in this year. Hārūn b. al-Muʿtaṣim rode and prayed over him, then he was carried and buried in the cemeteries of Quraysh near his grandfather Mūsā b. Jaʿfar. He was twenty-five years, three months, and twelve days old. His wife was taken to the palace of al-Muʿtaṣim and placed among the women of the harem. It has reached us from one of the ʿAlids that he said: I loved a slave-girl in Madīnah, but my means fell short of her price. I complained of that to Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Mūsā al-Riḍā, so he sent and bought her secretly. When I learned that she had been sold, and I did not know that he had bought her, my anxiety increased. I went to him and told him of her sale. He said: “Who bought her?” I said: “I do not know.” He said: “Would you like a pleasant surprise?” I said: “Yes.” We went out to a palace of his with an estate in which there were palm trees and other trees. He had ordered bedding and food to be brought. When we reached the estate, he took my hand and we entered, and he prevented his companions from entering. He began to say to me: “So-and-so has been sold, and you do not know who bought her?” I said: “Yes,” and I wept, until we came to a room with a curtain at its door, and in it was a slave-girl sitting on valuable bedding. I hesitated, and he said: “By God, you will enter.” So I entered, and there was the very slave-girl I had loved. I was astonished and bewildered. He said: “Do you recognize her?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “She is yours, along with the bedding, the palace, the estate, [and the produce] and the food. Stay as long as I live with her, and attain your desire in enjoying her.” Then he went out to his companions and said: “As for our food, it has become someone else's, so prepare food for us anew.” Then he summoned the tenant farmer and compensated him for his share of the produce, so that it became fully mine. Then he departed. Among the notables who died in this year: ʿAbd Allāh b. Rajāʾ. And Qālūn, one of the renowned Qurʾān reciters. And Abū Ḥudhayfah al-Nahdī.
