Dukayn is a nickname; his name was ʿAmr b. Ḥammād b. Zuhayr b. Dirham, a client of Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Taymī. He was born in the year 130. Abū Nuʿaym was a Kūfan, a partner of ʿAbd al-Salām [b. Ḥarb in one shop, selling cloaks. Abū Nuʿaym heard from al-Aʿmash, Misʿar, Zakariyyā] b. Abī Zāʾidah, Ibn Abī Laylā, al-Thawrī, Mālik, Shuʿbah, and others. He said: I wrote from more than one hundred shaykhs among those from whom Sufyān wrote. Ibn al-Mubārak heard from him, and Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, al-Bukhārī, Abū Zurʿah, and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy. He was tested in al-Kūfah during the days of the miḥnah. Its governor brought him and asked him about the Qurʾān. He said: I lived to see al-Kūfah when it contained more than seven hundred shaykhs, from al-Aʿmash down, saying: The Qurʾān is the speech of Allah, and my neck is easier for me than this button of mine. Aḥmad b. Yaʿqūb said: I heard ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ṣalt say: I was with Abū Nuʿaym when his son came to him weeping. He said to him: What is wrong with you? He said: People say that you are a Shīʿī. So he began reciting: And your concealments did not cease until I became, at the responding of those who ask about you, inarticulate, So that I might be safe from the words of slanderers and you might be safe. You are safe—and is there any living person among people who remains safe?! The compiler said: In another narration, he was asked: Are you a Shīʿī? He said: I heard al-Ḥasan b. Ṣāliḥ say: I heard Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad say: Love of ʿAlī is an act of worship, and the best act of worship is what is hidden. Aḥmad b. Manṣūr said: I went out with Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn to ʿAbd al-Razzāq, serving them. When we returned to al-Kūfah, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said to Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal: I want to test Abū Nuʿaym. Aḥmad said to him: Do not do more; the man is trustworthy. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said: I must. So he took a sheet of paper and wrote on it thirty ḥadīths from Abū Nuʿaym's ḥadīths, and at the head of each ten of them he placed a ḥadīth that was not from his ḥadīths. Then they came to Abū Nuʿaym and knocked on his door. He came out and sat on a bench of clay facing his door. He took Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and seated him on his right, and took Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn and seated him on his left, then I sat at the lower end of the bench. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn took out the sheets and read ten ḥadīths to him while Abū Nuʿaym was silent. Then he read the eleventh ḥadīth, and Abū Nuʿaym said to him: This is not from my ḥadīth, strike it out. Then he read the second ten while Abū Nuʿaym was silent. Then he read the twenty-first ḥadīth, and Abū Nuʿaym said: This is not from my ḥadīth, strike it out. Then he read the third ten and read the thirty-first ḥadīth. Abū Nuʿaym's expression changed, his eyes rolled, and he turned to Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn and said to him: As for this one—and Aḥmad's forearm was in his hand—he is too scrupulous to do this; and as for this one—meaning me—I am too insignificant to do such a thing. But this is your doing, O doer. Then he stretched out his leg and kicked Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, throwing him off the bench, and he rose and entered his house. Aḥmad said to Yaḥyā: Did I not forbid you from the man and tell you that he is reliable?! He said: By Allah, his kicking me is more beloved to me than my journey. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Yaʿqūb said: My grandfather narrated to us, saying: One of our companions narrated to us: Abū Nuʿaym came out to them in al-Kūfah one day in the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 217. A son of Muḥāḍir b. al-Muwarriʿ came to him, and Abū Nuʿaym said to him: I saw your father last night [in a dream], and it was as if he gave me two and a half dirhams. What do you interpret from this? We said: You saw good. He said: As for me, I have interpreted them as meaning that I will live two and a half days, or two and a half months, or two and a half years, and then I will join [your father]. He died in al-Kūfah on Tuesday night, at the end of Shaʿbān in the year 219. They said: That was thirty full months after this dream. It was also said: He died in the year 218.
