Translation
✧ [A great fire in al-Baṣrah] In this year, a great fire occurred in al-Baṣrah. Muḥammad b. ʿAmmār narrated, saying: I was in this fire, and behold a man came and said: I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so; you know me. I have in such-and-such a canal so many jarībs, and in such-and-such a canal so many jarībs. I have assigned ten jarībs from whichever canal he wishes to anyone who brings me my daughter. He said: And behold a man leapt up, wetted a cloak, then threw it over himself, and went into the fire. The man said: We belong to God; as for my daughter, she has perished and burned this man. Then it was said: That is he, that is he, and he is on the stairs. And behold he had wetted a cloak in the house, put the man's daughter inside it, then carried her until he entered the fire, cut through it and threw it off. The father then went, threw his garment over her and carried her, and the man who had brought her fainted. He said: The father came after the man had recovered, and said: Choose from whichever canal you wish. The man said: I have no need of it. He said: He kept pressing him while he refused, until he said: Had you gone out of greed, you would have burned and your daughter would have burned. And that was not accepted from him.
