The Year 212 AH
وَفِي رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ مِنْ هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ أَظْهَرَ الْمَأْمُونُ فِي النَّاسِ بِدْعَتَيْنِ فَظِيعَتَيْنِ؛ إِحْدَاهُمَا أَطَمُّ مِنَ الْأُخْرَى، وَهِيَ الْقَوْلُ بِخَلْقِ الْقُرْآنِ، وَالْأُخْرَى تَفْضِيلُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ عَلَى النَّاسِ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ. وَقَدْ أَخْطَأَ فِي كُلٍّ مِنْ هَذَيْنَ الْمَذْهَبَيْنِ خَطَأً كَبِيرًا فَاحِشًا، وَأَثِمَ إِثْمًا عَظِيمًا، وَمِنَ الْعُلَمَاءِ مَنْ يُكَفِّرُ مَنْ يَقُولُ بِخَلْقِ الْقُرْآنِ، كَمَا سَيَأْتِي ذَلِكَ فِي مَوْضِعِهِ.
Translation
✧ In Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year, al-Maʾmūn publicly proclaimed among the people two heinous innovations; one of them more calamitous than the other: the doctrine of the createdness of the Qurʾān, and the preference of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib over all people after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He erred greatly and grievously in both of these doctrines, and committed a grave sin. Among the scholars are those who declare as an infidel anyone who professes the createdness of the Qurʾān, as will be mentioned in its proper place.
