Translation
✧ Then the year two hundred and ten entered. Account of al-Maʾmūn’s capture of Ibn ʿĀʾishah In it, al-Maʾmūn captured Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Ibrāhīm, the imām known as Ibn ʿĀʾishah, and Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Ifrīqī, and Mālik b. Shāhī, and those who were with them among those who were working for the pledge of allegiance to Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī. The one who informed him about them and their doings was ʿImrān al-Quṭrubbulī. They had agreed to cut the bridge when the troops went out to meet Naṣr b. Shabath. ʿImrān informed on them, so they were seized in Ṣafar, and Naṣr b. Shabath entered Baghdādh without any of the troops meeting him. Ibn ʿĀʾishah was seized and made to stand at al-Maʾmūn’s gate for three days in the sun. Then he flogged him with whips and imprisoned him, and he flogged Mālik b. Shāhī and his companions. They wrote down for al-Maʾmūn the names of those who had joined them in this affair from among the rest of the people, but al-Maʾmūn did not pursue them. He said: “I am not safe from these having slandered innocent people.” Then he killed Ibn ʿĀʾishah, Ibn Shāhī, and two men from their companions. The reason for their killing was that al-Maʾmūn had learned that they wanted to tunnel out of the prison. One day before that, they had barred the prison door and would not let anyone enter upon them. When their news reached al-Maʾmūn, he rode to them himself, seized them, and executed them patiently. He crucified Ibn ʿĀʾishah, and he was the first ʿAbbāsid to be crucified in Islam. Then he was taken down, shrouded, prayed over, and buried in the cemeteries of Quraysh. Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī said: Al-Maʾmūn rode by night to al-Muṭbaq and killed Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Ibrāhīm, the imām known as Ibn ʿĀʾishah, and crucified him. This Ibn ʿĀʾishah was the first Hāshimī from the descendants of al-ʿAbbās to be crucified, while Zayd b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn was the first Hāshimī from the descendants of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib to be crucified. Killed with Ibn ʿĀʾishah were Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm and three others. They had wanted to leap upon al-Maʾmūn. Then he took Ibn ʿĀʾishah down, shrouded him, prayed over him, and buried him in the cemeteries of Quraysh. Al-Ifrīqī was buried in the cemeteries of al-Khayzurān. Boxes were found belonging to Ibn ʿĀʾishah containing letters from the commanders and others to him. He sat in the mosque, brought the boxes, and said to the people: “I know that among you is the innocent one whose name is not in these boxes, and among you is the absent and the one who sought more. If I look into them, I will not be clear to you nor will you be clear to me. So repent to God.” Then he ordered the boxes to be burned.
