✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 1171 - Aḥmad b. al-Rashīd, and it is said: his name was Ṣāliḥ, and he was called Abu ʿĪsā. He was one of the most beautiful of people in face, and when he resolved to ride out, people sat to see him more than they sat to see the caliphs. One day al-Rashīd said to him, while he was a boy: "Would that your beauty belonged to ʿAbd Allāh"—meaning al-Maʾmūn—and he replied: "But then his share of you would be mine." Al-Rashīd marveled at his answer despite his youth. Al-Maʾmūn had prepared him for the caliphate after himself, and he had intense love for him, to the point that he would say: "Death and the loss of kingship would be easy for me because of my love for Abu ʿĪsā to assume the affair after me, on account of my intense love for him." Abu ʿĪsā died during al-Maʾmūn's caliphate in this year, and al-Maʾmūn prayed over him, descended into his grave, and abstained from food for days. Aḥmad b. Abī Dāwūd said: I entered upon al-Maʾmūn after his brother Abu ʿĪsā had died—and he loved him—and he was weeping. I sat beside ʿUmar b. Masʿada and recited the poet's verse: A loss from this world and its pleasures—the loss of deaths among the Banū Hāshim He kept weeping, then wiped his eyes and recited: I shall weep for you as long as my tears flow; if they fail, / enough for you from me is what the ribs conceal. It is as if no living person died but you, and no mourners / ever rose for anyone but you. Then he turned to me and said: "Go on." Aḥmad said: I recited the verses of ʿAbda b. al-Ṭayyib: Upon you be God's peace, Qays b. ʿĀṣim, / and His mercy as long as He wills to show mercy— a greeting from one to whom you granted a favor / when he visited your lands safe from displeasure. For Qays's ruin was not the ruin of one man, / but it was the edifice of a people that collapsed. He wept for a while, then turned to ʿAmr b. Masʿada. He said: "Go on, ʿUmar." He said: They wept for Ḥudhayfa; you will never weep for his like / until tribes return that have not yet been created. He said: Then ʿUrayb and slave girls with her appeared, and they heard what was passing between us. She said: "Give me a share with you in the speech." Al-Maʾmūn said: "Speak." She said: Thus should the calamity be magnified and the matter made grave, / for no eye whose water has not overflowed has an excuse. It is as if the Banū al-ʿAbbās on the day of his death / were stars of a sky from whose midst the full moon had fallen. Al-Maʾmūn wept and we wept. Then al-Maʾmūn said: "Lament him." She lamented, and the slave girls echoed her, and al-Maʾmūn wept until his soul nearly departed. The cause of his death: he went out hunting and fell from his mount, and his brain was not spared. He would suffer seizures several times a day, and that was the cause of his death. In another narration: he saw the crescent of Ramaḍān and said: The month of fasting summoned me—would it had never been a month— / and may I not fast a month after it for the rest of time. If only the Imam could lend me his measure / against the month, I would seek aid with all my might against the month. Immediately after these words a seizure struck him, and he would suffer seizures several times a day until he died, and he did not reach a month like it. 1172 - Bishr b. Manṣūr al-Sulaymī. He transmitted from al-Thawrī. From al-ʿAbbās b. al-Walīd, who said: We came to Bishr b. Manṣūr after the afternoon prayer, and he came out to us as if altered. I said to him: "O Abū Muḥammad, perhaps we have distracted you from something." He replied weakly, then said: "How much I conceal from you—or a word like it—I was reading the muṣḥaf and you distracted me." Then he said: "I hardly meet anyone without being confounded before him in something." 1173 - Al-Ḥasan b. Mūsā, Abu ʿAlī al-Ashyab. He heard Shuʿba and Ḥammād b. Salama. Transmitted from him: Aḥmad and Abū Khaythama. He was originally from Khurasan, then resided in Baghdad and transmitted there. He held the judgeship of Mosul and Homs under al-Rashīd, then came to Baghdad during al-Maʾmūn's caliphate, and he appointed him judge of Ṭabaristān, so he set out there. He died in Rayy in this year. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said: He was trustworthy. From Abu Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmmār al-Mawṣilī, who said: In Mosul there was a church of the Christians that had fallen into ruin. The Christians gathered before al-Ḥasan b. Mūsā al-Ashyab and collected one hundred thousand dirhams for him on condition that he rule in favor of rebuilding it. He said: "Deposit the money with one of the witnesses." When they attended the mosque, he said to the witnesses: "Bear witness that I have ruled that this church shall not be rebuilt." The Christians departed, and he returned their money to them and accepted not a single dirham from them, while the church remained in ruins. Al-Khaṭīb said: He did that only because it was established by evidence before him that the church was a new construction built in Islamic times. 1174 - Saʿīd b. Wahb, Abu ʿUthmān, client of the Banū Usāma b. Luʾayy. He was a poet from the people of Basra, and he composed much poetry on love, wine, and licentiousness. He was associated with the Barmakids and advanced in their favor. One day he entered upon al-Faḍl b. Yaḥyā when he had sat for the poets, and they began reciting to him while he ordered rewards for them until none of them remained. Then he turned to Saʿīd b. Wahb as if prompting him to speak. He said to him: "O vizier, I had not prepared for this occasion, but two verses have come to me which I hope may stand in place of a full ode." He said: "Produce them, for a little may be more eloquent than much." He said: Al-Faḍl praised himself through deeds, / deeds in place of our praise in words. They commanded me to praise him; I said: No indeed, / al-Faḍl is too great for the praise of men. Al-Faḍl was delighted and said to him: "You have excelled, by God, and done well. Even if the words are few and rare, the meaning is broad and abundant." Then he commanded for him the like of what he had given every poet who recited that day, and said: "There is no good in what comes after your two verses." He rose from the assembly, and the people went out reciting only those two verses. Saʿīd b. Wahb had ten sons and ten daughters. Various things of sinfulness and play are related of him, but then he repented and became devout, abandoned composing poetry, tore up all that he had of it, and burned it. He became constant in prayer and performed the pilgrimage on foot. From ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Abī al-Dunyā, who said: Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to me, saying: Saʿīd b. Wahb performed the pilgrimage on foot, and he was exhausted and strained. He said: My two feet have traversed the sand of the dune / and trodden the bricks from the water of the well. Many a day you two went forth upon / the flower of the world and in a fertile valley, and a fair listening, fair upon fair, / the clamor of the lute like a gazelle fawn. So count that against this, and be rewarded, / and take from every art a share. I walk only because I am a sinner, / so perhaps God will pardon my sins. It has been related to us that Abu al-ʿAtāhiya was a friend of Saʿīd b. Wahb. When Saʿīd died, a man came and brought news to Abu al-ʿAtāhiya of something. He said to him: "What did he tell you?" He said: "He told me: Saʿīd b. Wahb has died. May God have mercy on Saʿīd b. Wahb: O Abu ʿUthmān, you made my eye weep; / O Abu ʿUthmān, you wounded my heart." He said: People marveled at Abu al-ʿAtāhiya's natural gift, that when he wanted to speak, his speech came out as poetry. 1175 - Saʿīd b. Muslim b. Qutayba b. Muslim b. ʿAmr b. al-Ḥuṣayn, Abu Muḥammad al-Bāhilī. Of Basran origin, he heard ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAwn and his generation. He had resided in Khurasan, and the sultan appointed him to some offices in Marw. He came to Baghdad and transmitted there. Transmitted from him: Ibn al-Aʿrābī. He was learned in ḥadīth and Arabic grammar, except that he did not offer himself readily to people. From Saʿīd b. Muslim b. Qutayba, who said: I set out on the pilgrimage with domed tents and canopies. We entered the desert, and I sent the tents and canopies ahead on some donkeys of mine. I passed by a bedouin sitting cross-legged at the door of his tent, and he was eyeing the tents and canopies. I greeted him, and he said: "To whom do these tents and canopies belong?" I said: "To a man of Bāhila." He said: "By God, I do not think God would give a Bāhilī all this." When I saw his contempt for the Bāhilī, I drew near and said: "O bedouin, would you like these tents and canopies to be yours while you are a man of Bāhila?" He said: "No, by God." I said: "Would you like to be Commander of the Faithful while you are a man of Bāhila?" [He said: "No, by God." I said: "Would you like to be one of the people of Paradise while you are a man of Bāhila?" He said: "On one condition."] I said: "What is that condition?" He said: "That the people of Paradise not know that I am a Bāhilī." He said: I had a purse of dirhams with me, and I threw it to him. He took it and said: "It has coincided with a need of mine." When he had taken it, I said to him: "I am a man of Bāhila." He threw it back to me and said: "I have no need of it." I said: "Take it, poor man, for you mentioned your need." He said: "I would not like to meet God while a Bāhilī has a favor over me." I returned and entered upon al-Maʾmūn and told him the story of the bedouin. He laughed until he fell back on his neck and said to me: "O Abu Muḥammad, how forbearing you are." And he rewarded me with one hundred thousand dirhams. 1176 - ʿAbd Allāh b. Ayyūb, [Abu Muḥammad] al-Taymī. From Taym al-Lāt b. Thaʿlaba, one of the poets of the Abbasid dynasty. He praised al-Amīn, who ordered for him two hundred thousand dirhams, and he praised al-Maʾmūn. From Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥasan b. Sahl, who said: Al-Maʾmūn was partial to the early poets and said: "Poetry ended with the rule of the Umayyads." My uncle al-Faḍl b. Sahl would say to him: "The early ones are the proof and the roots, while these are better at deriving branches," until one day ʿAbd Allāh b. Ayyūb al-Taymī recited to him a poem praising him, and when he reached his words: You see the outward of al-Maʾmūn as the best outward, / and even better than it is what he conceals and hides within. He confides to him a soul that rises with high resolve / toward every good deed, and a purified heart. Every beholder lowers his gaze in awe of him, / and he refuses, out of fear of God, to be arrogant. Long in sword-strap, lean in the belly, / the horse-charger has worn him down until he became spare. He trails his robe when peace lets its hem trail, / and when war one day tucks up its skirts for him, he tucks up his. He said to al-Faḍl: "After this there is no praise." From ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Qāsim, who said: Al-Taymī fell in love with a slave girl belonging to one of the slave-dealers, and he complained of his passion for her to Abu ʿĪsā b. al-Rashīd. Abu ʿĪsā said to al-Maʾmūn: "O Commander of the Faithful, al-Taymī is suffering for a slave girl of one of the slave-dealers, and he has written me two verses asking me about her." He said: "What did he write to you?" He recited: O Abu ʿĪsā, to you is the complaint, / and the brother of patience weeps when he is overwhelmed. I have no patience for her separation, / and I detest the shared drinking-place. He ordered for him thirty thousand dirhams, and he bought her. 1177 - ʿUthmān b. ʿUmar b. Fāris b. Laqīṭ b. Qays, Abu Muḥammad, and it is said: Abu ʿAdī al-Baṣrī. He transmitted from Yūnus b. Yazīd, Mālik b. Anas, and Shuʿba. Transmitted from him: Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Ibn Rāhawayh, and ʿAbbās al-Dūrī. He was trustworthy, righteous, and reliable. He died in this year; and it is said: in the year seven (207 AH); and it is said: in the year eight (208 AH).
