Translation

✧ Mention of the prominent people who died in this year 1145 - Ḥudhayfah b. Qatādah al-Marʿashī. He accompanied al-Thawrī, and he died in this year. Ḥudhayfah al-Marʿashī said: Beware of the gifts of the wicked and the foolish, for if you accept them, they will think that you are pleased with their actions. 1146 - Zayd b. Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Khuzāʿī al-Dimashqī. He heard Mālik b. Anas. Narrated from him: Ibn ʿAwf, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, and Abū Khaythamah. He was trustworthy and reliable. He died in this year in Damascus. 1147 - ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ghazwān, Abū Nūḥ ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik al-Khuzāʿī, known as Qurād. He heard Shuʿbah, ʿIkrimah b. ʿAmmār, and al-Layth b. Saʿd. Narrated from him Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal. He was trustworthy. He died in this year. 1148 - ʿUmar b. Ḥabīb al-ʿAdawī. From Banū ʿAdī b. Manāh, from the people of Baṣrah. He reported from Dāwūd b. Abī Hind, Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, Sulaymān al-Taymī, and Hishām b. ʿUrwah. Narrated from him Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Munādī. He had come to Baghdad and held the judgeship of the Eastern Quarter there, and he also held the judgeship of Baṣrah. ʿUmar b. Ḥabīb said: I attended the assembly of Hārūn al-Rashīd when an issue was raised and the disputants argued over it, their voices rising. Some of them used as evidence a ḥadīth narrated by Abū Hurayrah from the Prophet ﷺ, but others rejected the ḥadīth. The rejection and argument increased until some of them said: This ḥadīth cannot be transmitted from the Messenger of God ﷺ, for Abū Hurayrah is suspect in what he narrates. They explicitly called him a liar. I saw al-Rashīd incline toward them and support their words. So I said: The ḥadīth has a sound transmission, and Abū Hurayrah has a sound transmission from the Messenger of God ﷺ; he is truthful in what he narrates from the Prophet of God and others. Al-Rashīd looked at me with an angry look, so I rose from the assembly and returned to my home. I had not tarried long before it was said: The courier official is at the door. He entered and said: Answer the Commander of the Faithful as one who is to be killed; embalm yourself and shroud yourself. I said: O God, You know that I defended the companion of Your Prophet and honored Your Prophet ﷺ so that his companions would not be maligned. So save me from him. I was brought before al-Rashīd while he was seated on a chair, his forearms bared, a sword in his hand, and the leather execution mat before him. When he saw me he said: O ʿUmar b. Ḥabīb, no one has met me with contradiction and opposition to my words as you have. I said: O Commander of the Faithful, what you said and argued against me disparages the Messenger of God ﷺ and what he brought. If his companions were liars, then the religious law is invalid, and the obligations and rulings concerning fasting, prayer, divorce, marriage, and the prescribed punishments are all rejected and unacceptable. He reflected, then said: You have revived me, O ʿUmar b. Ḥabīb, may God revive you. And he ordered for me ten thousand dirhams. Al-Ḥusayn b. Shaddād said: ʿUmar b. Ḥabīb was over the judgeship of al-Ruṣāfah for Hārūn al-Rashīd. A man brought a complaint to him against ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAlī, so he summoned him. But ʿAbd al-Ṣamad refused to attend the court session. So ʿUmar b. Ḥabīb sealed his document chest and sat in his house. This was reported to Hārūn, who sent for him and said: What prevented you from holding court? He replied: I summoned a man, and he did not attend my session. He asked: Who is he? He said: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAlī. Hārūn said: By God, he will not come to your session except barefoot. He said: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad was a very old man. He said: Felt mats were spread for him from the gate of his palace to the mosque of al-Ruṣāfah, and he walked along saying: The Commander of the Faithful has exhausted me, the Commander of the Faithful has exhausted me. When he reached the session of ʿUmar b. Ḥabīb, he wanted to sit equal with him in the assembly, but ʿUmar shouted at him and said: Sit with your adversary. He said: The case proceeded against ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, and he ruled against him and recorded it. ʿAbd al-Ṣamad said to him: You have ruled against me with a judgment that will not pass beyond the lobe of your ear. ʿUmar replied: I have placed around your neck a collar that blacksmiths cannot remove from you. Stand. Al-Khaṭīb said: Thus it is mentioned in this account that he was over al-Ruṣāfah. But the well-known fact is that he was over the Eastern Quarter. ʿUmar died in this year after returning to Baṣrah. 1150 - Muḥammad b. Abī Rajāʾ al-Khurāsānī. One of the companions of Abū Yūsuf the judge. He held the judgeship of Baghdad during the days of al-Maʾmūn and died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year. 1151 - Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū Yaḥyā al-Asadī, known as Ibn Kunāsah. His father ʿAbd Allāh was given that nickname. Muḥammad was the son of the sister of Ibrāhīm b. Adham. He was learned in poetry, Arabic, and the historical accounts of the people. He came to Baghdad and reported there from Hishām b. ʿUrwah, al-Aʿmash, and others. Narrated from him: Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and others. Yaḥyā and Ibn al-Madīnī said: Ibn Kunāsah is trustworthy. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad said: A man saw Muḥammad b. Kunāsah carrying in his hand a sheep's belly, and said to him: Give it to me and I will carry it for you. He replied: It does not diminish the perfect one's perfection what he brings of benefit to his dependents. From Ḥammād b. Ibrāhīm, from his father, who said: I came to Muḥammad b. Kunāsah to write from him. The ḥadīth students crowded around him, and he grew annoyed with them and frowned at them. When they left, I approached him, and he was cheerful and delighted with me, and his face brightened. I said to him: I am amazed at the difference in your two states! He said to me: Those people annoyed me with their bad manners. When you came, I was pleased with you, and two verses occurred to me on the subject: In reticence and reserve, and when I meet people of dignity and generosity, I let my soul follow its natural disposition, and I say what I say without reserve. I said: I wish these two verses were mine for half of what I own. He said: May God spare you your wealth. No one has heard them, and I only composed them this hour. I said: How can I know for myself that they are not mine? Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥaḍramī said: Muḥammad b. Kunāsah died in the year 207. Ibn Qāniʿ said: In the year 209. The former is more correct.
