The ruler insisted on him regarding the judgeship, so he sat and judged a single case, then sought to be excused. He was, may God have mercy on him, at the utmost of excellence, piety, transmission, asceticism, and chastity. He has many works, including a tafsīr and others, and he has a musnad, which Abū al-Waqt narrated to us from him. He sat with Sufyān al-Thawrī and others, and he was among the foremost of the righteous. From Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī, who said: I heard Abū Sulaymān [al-Dārānī] say: I heard Abū Jaʿfar weeping in his Friday sermon. Anger overwhelmed me, and I was seized with the intention to stand up and admonish him about what I knew of his conduct when he descended. He said: But I reflected that if I stood before his successor and admonished him while the people were seated, staring at me, he would take notice of me and order me to be killed without proper verification. So I sat and remained silent. From Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī, who said: I heard Abū Sulaymān say: Were it not for the night, I would not love to remain in the world, [nor would I love to remain in the world] for the digging of rivers or the planting of trees. Abū Sulaymān died in this year. It was said: In the year 215, but that is not sound. 1136 - Numayr al-Kūfī, the madman. From Ibn Numayr, who said: I had a nephew whom my sister named after my father, Numayr. He was one of the daring rogues of the people of al-Kūfah. He had heard ḥadīth well, performed ablution well, and prayed well, watching the sun for its decline. Then something happened to him, and his reason departed. No roof of a house sheltered him. During the day he was in the cemetery, and at night he was on the rooftop, standing on his feet in cold, rain, and wind. One day he came down wanting to go to the graveyards. I said: O Numayr, do you sleep? He said: No. I said: What is the ailment that prevents you from sleeping? He said: This affliction that you see. I said: O Numayr, do you not fear God, Mighty and Majestic? He said: Yes, I do. And he said: Are not the most severely afflicted of people the prophets, then the next best, then the next best? He said: I said [to him]: You are more learned than I. He said: That is a statement that has passed. He said: I climbed up to him on a cold night while he was standing on the rooftop, and his mother was standing weeping. I said: O Numayr, is there anything left of you that we have not found objectionable? He said: Yes. I said: What is it? He said: Love of God, Mighty and Majestic, and love of His Messenger ﷺ. He said: I climbed up [to him] on a night in Ramaḍān and said to him: O Numayr, I have not broken my fast. He said: And why? I said: I want my sister to see you eating with me. He said: I will do it. He said: Food was brought up to us on the rooftop. He began eating with me until I finished and he finished. When I wanted to get up, I felt compassion for him, that he should see me leaving while he was in the darkness [and wind]. I wept, and he said: Woe to you, may God have mercy on you. I said to him: How can I go down to shelter and light and leave you in darkness and cold? He became angry and said: I have a Lord who is more merciful to me than you and more knowing of what benefits me. Let Him turn me however He wills, for I do not suspect Him in His decree. I said to him: If you are in the darkness of the night, then your grandfather is in the darkness of the grave. I wanted to console him and soothe his soul. He said to me: Would you make the soul of a righteous man like the soul of a fickle man? Then he said to me: Last night my father and your father, ʿAbd Allāh b. Numayr, came to me. He stood, then pointed to a spot where my father used to pray, and said to me: O Numayr, indeed you will come to us on Friday as a martyr. He said: So I called his mother. She climbed up to me, and I told her what he had said. She said: By God, I have never known him to lie, nor is this something he would speak of lightly. He speaks only truth. He made this statement on Wednesday evening. We marveled and said: Tomorrow is Thursday, and the day after is Friday. Suppose he falls ill tomorrow and dies the day after—then where is martyrdom? When Friday night came, in the middle of the night, we heard a sound, and there he was, seized by what used to stir him. He hurried to the stairs, his foot slipped, and he fell from them. His neck was broken. I dug for him beside my father and buried him. I threw myself upon my father's grave and said: O my father, Numayr has come to you and become your neighbor. By God, I said this only because of the grief in my heart, then I left. When night came, I saw my father in a dream, as if he had entered upon me through the door of the house. He said: O my son, may God reward you well for making Numayr my neighbor. Know that from the time you brought him to us until I came to you, he married the ḥūr.
