ذِكْرُ عِدَّةِ حَوَادِثَ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ لِلَيْلَتَيْنِ بَقِيَتَا مِنْ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ، حَتَّى ذَهَبَ ضَوْءُهَا، غَابَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ ثُلْثَيْهَا. وَوَصَلَ الْمَأْمُونُ إِلَى هَمَذَانَ فِي آخِرِ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ. وَكَانَتْ بِخُرَاسَانَ زَلَازِلُ عَظِيمَةٌ، وَدَامَتْ مِقْدَارَ سَبْعِينَ يَوْمًا، وَكَانَ مُعْظَمُهَا بِبَلْخَ، وَالْجُوزْجَانِ، وَالْفَارِيَابِ، وَالطَّالِقَانِ، وَمَا وَرَاءَ النَّهْرِ، فَخَرِبَتِ الْبِلَادُ، وَتَهَدَّمَتِ الدُّورُ، وَهَلَكَ فِيهِ خَلْقٌ كَثِيرٌ. ( وَفِيهَا ظَهَرَ بِالْأَنْدَلُسِ رَجُلٌ يُعْرَفُ بِالْوَلَدِ، وَخَالَفَ عَلَى صَاحِبِهَا، فَسَيَّرَ إِلَيْهِ جَيْشًا، فَحَصَرُوهُ بِمَدِينَةِ بَاجَةَ، وَكَانَ اسْتَوْلَى عَلَيْهَا، فَضَيَّقُوا عَلَيْهِ، فَمَلَكُوهَا وَقُيِّدَ. وَفِيهَا وَلِيَ أَسَدُ بْنُ الْفُرَاتِ الْفَقِيهُ الْقَضَاءَ بِالْقَيْرَوَانِ ).
Translation
✧ An Account of Several Events In this year, the sun was eclipsed when two nights remained of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, to the extent that its light went away and more than two-thirds of it disappeared. Al-Maʾmūn arrived in Hamadhān at the end of Dhū al-Ḥijjah. There were great earthquakes in Khurāsān, and they lasted about seventy days. The greatest of them were in Balkh, al-Jūzjān, al-Fāriyāb, al-Ṭāliqān, and Mā Warāʾ al-Nahr. The lands were ruined, the houses collapsed, and many people perished in them. (In it, there appeared in al-Andalus a man known as al-Walad, and he rebelled against its ruler. He sent an army against him, and they besieged him in the city of Bājah, which he had seized. They pressed him hard, took the city, and he was put in chains. In it, Asad b. al-Furāt, the jurist, was appointed to the judiciary in al-Qayrawān.)
