✧ Mention of the deposition of Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī In this year the people of Baghdādh deposed Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī. The reason for that was what we have mentioned of his seizure of ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad, as previously related. When his associates, among them al-ʿAbbās, wrote to Ḥumayd to come to them, he marched until he reached the Nahr Ṣarṣar and encamped by it. Al-ʿAbbās and the commanders of the people of Baghdādh went out to him and met him. They had stipulated to him that he give every soldier fifty dirhams. He agreed to that and promised them that he would make the payment to them on Saturday in al-Yāsiriyyah, on condition that he be proclaimed for al-Maʾmūn as caliph on Friday and that they depose Ibrāhīm. They agreed to that. When the news reached Ibrāhīm, he brought out ʿĪsā and his brothers who were with him from prison, and asked him to return to his house and to suffice him in the matter of this side, but he refused. When Friday came, he brought al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad b. Abī Rajāʾ the jurist, and he led the people in the Friday prayer and proclaimed al-Maʾmūn as caliph. Ḥumayd came to al-Yāsiriyyah and reviewed the army of Baghdādh and gave them the fifty he had promised them. They asked him to reduce it by ten at a time because of the ill omen they associated with ʿAlī b. Hishām when he gave them the fifty and then cut off their pay. Ḥumayd said: Rather, I will increase you by ten and give you sixty dirhams for each man. When that reached Ibrāhīm, he summoned ʿĪsā and asked him to fight Ḥumayd. He agreed to that, so he released him and took sureties from him. ʿĪsā spoke to the troops and promised them that he would give them the like of what Ḥumayd had given them, but they refused that. So ʿĪsā and the commanders of the eastern side crossed over to them and promised those troops that he would increase them over the sixty. But they reviled him and his companions and said: We do not want Ibrāhīm. He fought them for a while, then threw himself into their midst until they took him like a captive. One of his commanders took him and brought him to his house, and the rest returned to Ibrāhīm and told him the news, and he was grieved by that. Al-Muṭṭalib b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik had gone into hiding from Ibrāhīm, as we have mentioned. When Ḥumayd arrived, he wanted to cross over to him, but they learned of him and seized him and brought him before Ibrāhīm, who imprisoned him for three days, then released him on the night of the first of Dhū al-Ḥijjah. Mention of the hiding of Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī In this year Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī went into hiding. The reason for that was that Ḥumayd moved and encamped at the mills of ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik. When Ibrāhīm's companions and commanders saw that, they slipped away to him, and most of them came to be with him, and they seized al-Madāʾin for him. When Ibrāhīm saw their action, he sent out all who remained with him to fight. They met at the bridge of Nahr Dayālā and fought, and Ḥumayd defeated them. His companions pursued them until they entered Baghdādh, and that was on the last day of Dhū al-Qaʿdah. On the Day of Sacrifice, al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ went into hiding, then went over to Ḥumayd. The Hāshimites and the commanders began coming to Ḥumayd one after another. When Ibrāhīm saw that, he was at a loss and it distressed him. Al-Muṭṭalib wrote to Ḥumayd to hand over that side to him. Saʿīd b. al-Sājūr, Abū al-Baṭṭ, and others were writing to ʿAlī b. Hishām to seize Ibrāhīm for him. When Ibrāhīm learned of their affair and of what every group of his companions had agreed upon, he began to conciliate them. But when night fell, he went into hiding on Wednesday night, thirteen nights remaining of Dhū al-Ḥijjah. Al-Muṭṭalib sent to Ḥumayd informing him that he had surrounded Ibrāhīm's house. Ibn al-Sājūr wrote to ʿAlī b. Hishām. Ḥumayd rode immediately from the mills of ʿAbd Allāh and came to Bāb al-Jisr, and ʿAlī b. Hishām came and encamped at Nahr Bayn, then advanced to the mosque of Kawthar. Ḥumayd approached Ibrāhīm's house, and they searched for him but did not find him there. Ibrāhīm remained in hiding until al-Maʾmūn came, and even after he arrived, until his affair came to what it came to. Ibrāhīm's days were one year, eleven months, and twelve days. After him, ʿAlī b. Hishām was over eastern Baghdādh and Ḥumayd over its western side. Ibrāhīm had released Sahl b. Salāmah from prison, and people had thought he had been killed. He used to call in the mosque of al-Ruṣāfah to what he was upon, and when night came he was returned to his prison. Then he released him and let him go on the night of the first of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, and he went and hid. Then he appeared after Ibrāhīm's flight, and Ḥumayd brought him near and treated him well and returned him to his family. When al-Maʾmūn came, he rewarded him and gave him gifts.
