✧ Mention of the pledge of allegiance of the people of Baghdad to Ibrahim b. al-Mahdi When the news came to Baghdad that al-Maʾmun had pledged allegiance to ʿAli b. Musa for succession to the caliphate after him, they differed among themselves: some responded and pledged allegiance, while others refused and prevented it. The majority of the Abbasids were against it, and the ones who incited them and took charge of that were Ibrahim and Mansur, the two sons of al-Mahdi. When it was Tuesday, five nights remaining of Dhu al-Hijjah, the Abbasids openly pledged allegiance to Ibrahim b. al-Mahdi and titled him al-Mubarak. He was dark-skinned in complexion, and after him to his nephew Ishaq b. Musa b. al-Mahdi, and they deposed al-Maʾmun. Then when it was Friday, two nights remaining of Dhu al-Hijjah, they intended to pray for al-Maʾmun, then after him for Ibrahim. But the common people said: We will not be satisfied except with Ibrahim alone. The people differed and became unsettled among themselves, and they did not perform the Friday prayer, and the people prayed individually, four rakʿahs.
