✧ Mention of the disturbance of the Ḥarbiyyah in Baghdad In this year there occurred in Baghdad a disturbance between the Ḥarbiyyah and al-Ḥasan b. Sahl. The reason for that was that al-Ḥasan b. Sahl was at al-Madāʾin when Harthamah departed to al-Maʾmūn. When he reached Baghdad and heard what al-Maʾmūn had done to Harthamah, al-Ḥasan b. Sahl sent to ʿAlī b. Hishām, who was his governor of Baghdad, saying: Delay the Ḥarbiyyah troops' stipends and do not give them anything. Previously, when Harthamah had gone out to Khurasan, the Ḥarbiyyah had risen up and said: We will not be content until we expel al-Ḥasan and his agents from Baghdad. So they expelled them, and they appointed Isḥāq b. Mūsā al-Hādī as al-Maʾmūn's caliph in Baghdad. The people of both sides gathered in agreement on that and were pleased with him. Then al-Ḥasan secretly worked against them and corresponded with their commanders until they sent from the side of the camp of al-Mahdī. The Ḥarbiyyah then transferred Isḥāq to them and lodged him on the Dujayl. Zuhayr b. al-Musayyab came and encamped in the camp of al-Mahdī. Al-Ḥasan sent ʿAlī b. Hishām to the other side, he and Muḥammad b. Abī Khālid, and they entered Baghdad by night in Shaʿbān. He fought the Ḥarbiyyah for three days at the bridge of al-Ṣarāh. Then he promised them six months' provision when the harvest was gathered. They asked him to advance fifty dirhams for each man among them, which they would spend during Ramaḍān, and he agreed to that. He began to give them, but the payment was not yet complete when news came to them of Zayd b. Mūsā from al-Baṣrah, known as Zayd al-Nār. He had escaped from prison, where he had been with ʿAlī b. Saʿīd. He came out from the direction of al-Anbār, he and the brother of Abū al-Sarāyā, in Dhū al-Qaʿdah of the year two hundred. They sent for him and he was brought to ʿAlī b. Hishām. ʿAlī b. Hishām fled from the Ḥarbiyyah a week later and encamped at Ṣarṣar, because he had not fulfilled for them the payment of the fifty before the Feast of Sacrifice came, and the news of Harthamah reached them and they expelled him. The one in charge of Harthamah's affair was Muḥammad b. Abī Khālid, because ʿAlī b. Hishām used to treat him with contempt. He became angry at that and went over to the Ḥarbiyyah, so ʿAlī did not approach them, and he fled to Ṣarṣar. Then they routed him from Ṣarṣar. It is said: The reason for the disturbance of the abnāʾ was that al-Ḥasan b. Sahl flogged ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī b. Māhān with the prescribed punishment, so the abnāʾ became angry and rose up.
