✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 1082 - Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah b. Abī ʿImrān b. Muḥammad, a client of Banū Hāshim b. Ruʾbah. It is also said: a client of Muḥammad b. Muzāḥim al-Hilālī. He was born in al-Kūfah in the year 107. His father was one of the officials of Khālid al-Qasrī. When Khālid was dismissed from Iraq and Yūsuf b. ʿUmar took over, he sought Khālid's officials, and they fled from him. ʿUyaynah fled and settled in Makkah. Sufyān had nine brothers, four of whom narrated: Muḥammad, Ādam, ʿImrān, and Ibrāhīm. Sufyān was given precedence over all of them. Abū Aḥmad Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Naysābūrī al-Ḥāfiẓ said: The Banū ʿUyaynah were ten silk merchants. Five of them narrated — he mentioned them — and the maternal uncles of Banū ʿUyaynah were Banū Banī al-Muttaʾid. Among them narrated Yūsuf and Yaʿqūb and Nuʿaym b. Yaʿqūb b. al-Muttaʾid. Sufyān met eighty-six individuals from the Successors. Among the major figures who narrated from him were al-Aʿmash, al-Thawrī, Shuʿbah, Ibn al-Mubārak, Wakīʿ, Ibn Mahdī, al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad, and Yaḥyā. He wrote down from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah when he was thirty-five years old, five years before the death of al-Aʿmash, and he narrated in the circle of al-Aʿmash. From Ibrāhīm b. Azdād al-Rāfiqī: he said: Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah said to me: When I reached fifteen, my father called me and said: O Sufyān, the rules of youth [for good] have been cut off from you. Guard goodness and you will be of its people. Let not one who is deceived by God deceive you by praising you for what you know to be contrary to you. For there is no one who says good about anyone when pleased but he also says twice as much evil about him when angry. Find comfort in solitude from bad companions. Do not change my best expectation of you to otherwise. No one prospers through the scholars except one who obeys them. Sufyān said: I made my father's counsel a qiblah to which I incline and from which I do not deviate. Aḥmad b. al-Naḍr al-Hilālī said: I heard my father say: I was in the circle of Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, and he looked at a boy who entered the mosque and they disdained him because of his young age. Sufyān said: "Thus you were before, and God favored you." Then he said: O Naṣr, if you had seen me when I was ten, my height five spans, my face like a dinar, I was like a flame of fire, my garments small, my sleeves short, my hem of a measure, my sandals like the ears of a mouse, I went back and forth to the scholars of the garrison towns, like al-Zuhrī and ʿAmr b. Dīnār, sitting among them like a nail, my inkpot like a walnut, my pen-case like a banana, my pen like an almond. When I entered the circle they said: Make room for the shaykh. Then Ibn ʿUyaynah smiled and laughed. From Bishr b. Maṭar: he said: We were at the door of Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, and a group came and entered, and another group came and entered. We shouted and said: The people of dirhams and dinars come and enter, while we, the poor and the wayfarers, are prevented from entering! He came out to us weeping and said: You have spoken rightly, so say: Have you seen a family man who prospered? Then he said: I inform you that I was given the understanding of the Qur'an, but when I took the wealth of Abū Jaʿfar, I was deprived of it. From Abū Bakr b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṭarsūsī: he said: I heard Ḥāmid b. Yaḥyā al-Balkhī say: I heard Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah say: I saw as if all my teeth had fallen out. I mentioned that to al-Zuhrī, and he said: Your companions will die and you will remain alone. My companions died and I remained. From Abū Bakr al-Athram: he said: I heard Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal — and he mentioned Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah — say: We have not seen his like. From Muḥammad b. Saʿd: he said: al-Ḥasan b. ʿImrān b. ʿUyaynah informed me that Sufyān said to him at Jamʿ in the last Hajj he performed: I have come to this place seventy times, saying each year: O God, do not make this the last time from this place. I have become shy before God from asking Him that so often. He returned and died in the following year. Ibn Saʿd said: al-Wāqidī said: Sufyān informed me that he was born in the year 107 and died on the first day of Rajab in the year 198, and was buried in al-Ḥajūn. It is also said: on the last day of Jumādā al-Ākhirah. 1083 - ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī b. Ḥassān b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū Saʿīd al-ʿAnbarī. He was born in the year 135. He heard Sufyān al-Thawrī, Mālik, Shuʿbah, the two Ḥammāds, and many others. Narrated from him: Ibn al-Mubārak, Ibn al-Madīnī, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Yaḥyā, and others. He was one of the major scholars and one of those renowned for memorization and jurisprudence, and he was intensely devoted to the memorization of hadith. From Ṣāliḥ b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿIjlī: he said: My father narrated to me, and he mentioned ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī — he said: A man said to him: Which is dearer to you, that God forgive you a sin, or that you memorize a hadith? He said: I memorize a hadith. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: When ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrates from a man, he is a proof. Ibn al-Madīnī said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was the most knowledgeable of people. If I were taken and made to stand between the Corner and the Station, I would swear by God that I have never seen anyone more knowledgeable in hadith than ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā said: I never saw a book in the hand of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. Everything I heard from him I heard from memory. From ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī: he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī used to complete the Qur'an every two nights, and his nightly portion was half the Qur'an. Ibn al-Madīnī said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān died in the year 198, at the age of sixty-three. 1084 - ʿAmr b. al-Haytham b. Quṭn b. Kaʿb, Abū Quṭn al-Qaṭʿī al-Baṣrī. He came to Baghdad and narrated there from Shuʿbah and Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī. Aḥmad and Yaḥyā narrated from him, and he said: He is trustworthy. He died in Shaʿbān of this year. 1085 - Muḥammad al-Amīn. [Ibn al-Jawzī, may God have mercy on him, said]: We have mentioned the manner of his killing in the events. He was killed with six days remaining of Muḥarram in the year 198, and his age was thirty-three. It is also said: twenty-eight. His caliphate, along with the time of civil strife, was four years, eight months, and five days. It is also said: seven months and eight days. It is also said: six months and twenty-four days. 1086 - Muḥammad b. Munādhir the poet, known as Abū Dhuraīḥ. It is also said: Abū Jaʿfar. It is also said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh. He was a client of Sulaymān al-Qahramānī, and Sulaymān was a client of ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Bakrah. He heard Muḥammad, Shuʿbah, Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, and others. He was an eloquent poet, praised al-Mahdī, and was knowledgeable in language. Al-Thawrī said: I asked Abū ʿUbaydah about the second day of the sacrifice, what did the Arabs call it? He said: I do not know. Then I met Ibn Munādhir and told him, and he said: Drop such a question on Abū ʿUbaydah! They are four consecutive days, all on the letter rāʾ: the first is the Day of Sacrifice, the second is the Day of Return (al-farr), the third is the Day of Departure (al-nafr), and the fourth is the Day of Setting Out (al-ṣadr). Then I met Abū ʿUbaydah and told him, and he wrote it down from me on the authority of Muḥammad b. Munādhir. Muḥammad b. Munādhir used to worship and practice devotion and keep to the mosque. Then he fell in love with ʿAbd al-Majīd b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Thaqafī, and he became dissolute, turned away from devotion, and displayed debauchery. ʿAbd al-Majīd was among the most beautiful of people in face, manners, and dress, and he also loved Ibn Munādhir. ʿAbd al-Majīd married a woman and held a wedding feast for a month, during which the people of al-Baṣrah gathered at his place. One day he went up to the roof and saw a rope of the curtain ropes had come loose. He bent over it to tighten it, fell headfirst, and died from his fall. I never saw a greater calamity than his calamity. Ibn Munādhir mourned him and said: When ʿAbd al-Majīd passed away, he destroyed a pillar that was never to be destroyed. His bier did not know, nor did its bearers, what was upon the bier of chastity and generosity. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said: Ibn Munādhir was a man of poetry, not a man of hadith. He was infatuated with Ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb and composed poetry about him. He made love verses about the women of Thaqīf, so they expelled him from al-Baṣrah. He went out to Makkah and used to let scorpions loose in the Sacred Mosque so that they would sting people, and he would pour ink at night in the places where people performed ablution so that their faces would turn black. No man of good narrates from him. 1087 - Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd b. Farrūkh, Abū Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān al-Aḥwal. He was born in the year 110. He heard Hishām b. ʿUrwah, Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, al-Aʿmash, Sufyān, and others. Narrated from him: Ibn Mahdī, ʿAffān, Aḥmad, ʿAlī, Yaḥyā, and others. ʿAlī said: I have not seen anyone more reliable than Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, nor more knowledgeable about the narrators. Aḥmad said: My eyes have not seen his like. No, by God, we have not met his like. How precise he was and how meticulous in his checking. From Sulaymān b. al-Ashʿath: he said: I heard Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn say: Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd spent twenty years completing the Qur'an every night, he never missed the mosque for forty years, and he was never seen seeking a congregation. Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd died in Ṣafar of this year.
