Translation
✧ Account of Ṭāhir's seizure of al-Madāʾin and his encampment at Ṣarṣar Then Ṭāhir marched to al-Madāʾin, where there was a large army belonging to al-Amīn, under the command of al-Barmakī, who had fortified himself there. Reinforcements, robes of honour, and gifts came to him every day. When Ṭāhir drew near, he sent Quraysh b. Shibl and al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī al-Maʾmūnī in his vanguard. When al-Barmakī's men heard Ṭāhir's war drums, they saddled and mounted, and al-Barmakī began drawing up the battle lines. But every time he straightened a rank, it broke and fell into disorder, and their front ranks collapsed upon their rear ranks. He said: "O God, we seek refuge in You from being forsaken!" Then he said to his rear-guard commander: "Let the people go their way, for there is no good in them." So they trampled one another in their flight toward Baghdādh. Ṭāhir then alighted at al-Madāʾin and took control of those districts. Then he marched to Ṣarṣar, where he built a bridge and encamped.
