Translation

✧ Account of Ṭāhir's seizure of Wāsiṭ and other places Then Ṭāhir marched from al-Ahwāz to Wāsiṭ, where al-Sindī b. Yaḥyā al-Ḥarashī and al-Haytham b. Shuʿbah, the deputy of Khuzaymah b. Khāzim, were stationed. Every time Ṭāhir advanced toward them, the outposts and governors before him collapsed, until he reached Wāsiṭ. Al-Sindī and al-Haytham b. Shuʿbah fled from it, and Ṭāhir took control of Wāsiṭ. He dispatched one of his commanders to al-Kūfah, where al-ʿAbbās b. Mūsā al-Hādī was in charge. When the news reached him, he renounced al-Amīn and pledged allegiance to al-Maʾmūn, and wrote of that to Ṭāhir. Ṭāhir's cavalry encamped at Famm al-Nīl, and he gained control over the territory between Wāsiṭ and al-Kūfah. Al-Manṣūr b. al-Mahdī, who was al-Amīn's governor over al-Baṣrah, wrote to Ṭāhir with his allegiance and obedience. The allegiance of al-Muṭṭalib b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik in al-Mawṣil to al-Maʾmūn and the renunciation of al-Amīn also came to him. All of this took place in Rajab of this year. Ṭāhir confirmed them in their posts. He appointed Dāwūd b. ʿĪsā b. Mūsā b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Hāshimī over Makkah and Madinah, and he appointed Yazīd b. Jarīr b. Yazīd b. Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī al-Bajalī over al-Yaman. He sent al-Ḥārith b. Hishām and Dāwūd b. Mūsā to Qaṣr Ibn Hubayrah, and Ṭāhir stayed at Jarjarāyā. When al-Amīn received news of his governor in al-Kūfah and his renunciation and pledge of allegiance to al-Maʾmūn, he dispatched Muḥammad b. Sulaymān the commander and Muḥammad b. Ḥammād al-Barbarī, ordering them to launch a night attack on al-Ḥārith b. Hishām and Dāwūd at the palace. The news reached al-Ḥārith, so he and Dāwūd rode out and crossed a ford at Sūrāʾ toward them. They dealt them a severe blow, and they fought a fierce battle, and the people of Baghdād were routed. Al-Amīn also dispatched al-Faḍl b. Mūsā b. ʿĪsā al-Hāshimī as governor over al-Kūfah with cavalry. The news reached Ṭāhir, so he sent Muḥammad b. al-ʿAlāʾ with an army to intercept him. He met al-Faḍl at the village of al-Aʿrāb. Al-Faḍl sent word to him: "I am obedient and compliant; my departure was only a ruse on my part against Muḥammad al-Amīn." Ibn al-ʿAlāʾ said to him: "I do not understand what you are saying. If you want Ṭāhir, then go back the way you came; that is the easier route." Al-Faḍl turned back. Muḥammad b. al-ʿAlāʾ said: "Be on your guard, for I do not trust his cunning." Then al-Faḍl returned to Ibn al-ʿAlāʾ, thinking that he was unprepared, but he found him alert and wary. They fought a fierce battle, as fierce as any battle can be, and al-Faḍl and his companions were routed.
