ذِكْرُ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ سَهْلٍ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ خُطِبَ لِلْمَأْمُونِ بِإِمْرَةِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، وَرَفْعِ مَنْزِلَةِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ سَهْلٍ. وَسَبَبُ ذَلِكَ أَنَّهُ لَمَّا أَتَاهُ خَبَرُ قَتْلِ ابْنِ مَاهَانَ وَعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ جَبَلَةَ، وَصَحَّ عِنْدَهُ الْخَبَرُ بِذَلِكَ، أَمَرَ أَنْ يُخْطَبَ لَهُ، وَيُخَاطَبَ بِأَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، وَدَعَا الْفَضْلَ بْنَ سَهْلٍ وَعَقَدَ لَهُ عَلَى الْمَشْرِقِ مِنْ جَبَلِ هَمَذَانَ إِلَى التُّبَّتِ طُولًا، وَمِنْ بَحْرِ فَارِسَ إِلَى بَحْرِ الدَّيْلَمِ وَجُرْجَانَ عَرْضًا، وَجَعَلَ لَهُ عِمَالَةً ثَلَاثَةَ آلَافِ أَلْفِ دِرْهَمٍ، وَعَقَدَ لَهُ لِوَاءً عَلَى سِنَانٍ ذِي شُعْبَتَيْنِ، وَلَقَّبَهُ ذَا الرِّيَاسَتَيْنِ، رِيَاسَةِ الْحَرْبِ، وَالْقَلَمِ، وَحَمَلَ اللِّوَاءَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، وَحَمَلَ الْقَلَمَ نُعَيْمُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ، وَوَلَّى الْحَسَنَ بْنَ سَهْلٍ دِيوَانَ الْخَرَاجِ.
Translation
✧ Mention of al-Faḍl b. Sahl In this year, allegiance was sworn to al-Maʾmūn as Commander of the Faithful, and the rank of al-Faḍl b. Sahl was elevated. The reason for that was that when news reached him of the killing of Ibn Māhān and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jabalah, and the report of that was confirmed to him, he ordered that allegiance be sworn to him, and that he be addressed as Commander of the Faithful. He summoned al-Faḍl b. Sahl, and appointed him over the East, from the mountain of Hamadhān to Tibet in length, and from the Sea of Fārs to the Sea of al-Daylam and Jurjān in breadth. He assigned him a remuneration of three million dirhams, and gave him a banner on a two-pronged spearhead, and gave him the title Dhū al-Riʾāsatayn, "holder of the two commands": the command of war and the command of the pen. ʿAlī b. Hishām carried the banner, and Nuʿaym b. Ḥāzim carried the pen. He appointed al-Ḥasan b. Sahl over the dīwān of the land tax.
