Translation

✧ Those of the notables who died in this year Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥārith b. Asmāʾ b. Khārijah, Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī: Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥārith b. Asmāʾ b. Khārijah, Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī: his biography. He was a scholar, an adherent of the Sunnah. He transmitted ḥadīth from Sufyān al-Thawrī and al-Awzāʿī. He died at al-Maṣṣīṣah in this year, though it was also said in the year 185 AH. Ibrāhīm b. Māhān b. Bahman: Ibrāhīm b. Māhān b. Bahman, Abū Isḥāq, known as al-Mawṣilī. He was from Arrajān, affiliated by clientage with the Banū Ḥanẓalah, and his origin was Persian. His father left Arrajān with his mother, who was pregnant with him, and came to al-Kūfah, where she gave birth to him in the year 125 AH. In al-Kūfah he kept company with young men in pursuit of singing. His maternal uncles were severe with him about that, so he went out to al-Mawṣil, then returned to al-Kūfah. His maternal uncles said to him, “Welcome to the young man of al-Mawṣil.” He studied literature and composed poetry, and he attached himself to caliphs and kings. On the authority of Isḥāq al-Mawṣilī, from his father Ibrāhīm, who said: My servant came to me and said, “At the door is a weaver requesting permission to see you.” I said, “Woe to you! What have I to do with a weaver?” He said, “I do not know, except that he swore by divorce that he would not leave until he spoke with you about his need.” I said, “Give him permission.” He entered, and I said, “What is your need?” He said, “May God make me your ransom. I am a weaver. Yesterday a group of my companions and I were discussing singing and those foremost in it. All present agreed that you are the head of the people, their leading merchant, and their master in it. So I swore by the divorce of my cousin, the dearest of creation to me, trusting in your generosity, that you would drink at my place tomorrow and sing to me. If you see fit—may God make me your ransom—to bestow that favor upon your servant.” I said to him, “Where is your house?” He said, “In the dwellings of the Companions.” I said, “Describe its location to the servant.” When I had prayed the noon prayer, I went. When I entered, the weavers rose for me and crowded around me, kissing my extremities, and offered me food. I said, “I have already eaten.” Then I said to him, “Make a request.” The weaver said to me, “Sing to me, by my life: They say to me: Had union been possible, Nusaybah would not have died; and the night-visitors’ speech is false. So I sang. He said, “You have done well, by God; may God make me your ransom.” Then I said, “Make a request.” He said, “Sing to me, by my life: And they marked with the tips of lances my resting-place, and returned over my eyes the excess of my cloak. So I sang. He said, “You have done well, by God; may God make me your ransom.” Then I said, “Make a request.” He said, “Sing to me, by my life: Is it true, servants of God, that I do not go down or come up without a watcher over me? So I said, “O son of a foul woman! You are more like Ibn Surayj than like the weavers.” Then I said, “By God, if you do it a second time, your wife will become lawful to my servant before she becomes lawful to you.” Then I left. The messenger of al-Rashīd came seeking me, so I went immediately and entered upon al-Rashīd. He said, “Where were you, O Ibrāhīm?” I said, “Do I have safe-conduct?” He said, “You have safe-conduct,” so I told him. He laughed and said, “This is the noblest weaver on the face of the earth. By God, you have been generous in his affair and have done well in answering him.” He sent for the weaver, questioned him, and found him delightful and witty. He ordered for him thirty thousand dirhams. Ibrāhīm died in this year, and he said about that: My physician has grown weary, by God, of enduring what afflicts me. I shall soon be mourned, after a little while, by enemy and friend. It is also said that he died in the year 213 AH, but the first is more correct. He left property amounting to twenty-four million dirhams. Jarīr b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Jarīr b. Qurṭ b. Hilāl, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḍabbī al-Rāzī: Jarīr b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Jarīr b. Qurṭ b. Miqsam, Ḥuṣayn b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Manṣūr b. al-Muʿtamir, Hishām b. ʿUrwah, al-Aʿmash, and others. Those who transmitted from him include Ibn al-Mubārak, al-Ṭayālisī, Aḥmad b. He died in this year at the age of seventy-eight. Rushdayn b. Saʿd b. Mufliḥ, Abū al-Ḥajjāj: Rushdayn b. Saʿd b. Mufliḥ, Abū al-Ḥajjāj. He was born in the year 110 AH. Those who transmitted from him include Ibn al-Mubārak and Baqiyyah. He was a righteous man, but he was afflicted by a kind of heedlessness. He died in this year. ʿUmar b. Ayyūb, Abū Ḥafṣ al-ʿAbdī al-Mawṣilī: ʿUmar b. Ayyūb, Abū Ḥafṣ al-ʿAbdī al-Mawṣilī. He traveled to Syria and Iraq, and he did much in hearing and writing ḥadīth. He heard from al-Muʿāfā b. ʿImrān, al-Thawrī, and many others. Those who transmitted from him include Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, who praised him and said, “He is trustworthy,” and he had a dignified bearing. On the authority of al-Ḥusayn b. Idrīs al-Anṣārī, who said: Ibn ʿAmmār said: I saw ʿUmar b. Ayyūb take out wool from a patched basket and give it to his son. His son went and sold it, then came back with bread and placed it before us. We refused to eat, so he spent the night without having anything. I never saw him mention this world with a single word. He was one of the most bashful of people. He died at al-Raqqah in this year. In this year also died al-ʿAbbās b. al-Aḥnaf, the poet, though it was also said in the year 193 AH. His father al-Aḥnaf died in the year 150 AH. In this year also died Shuhayd b. ʿĪsā in al-Andalus, at the age of ninety-three. He had entered al-Andalus with ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muʿāwiyah.
