The story of Zakariyyā and Yaḥyā (peace be upon them both)
Translation
✧ The sending of Yaḥyā ﷺ with five words From al-Ḥārith al-Ashʿarī, that the Prophet ﷺ said: Indeed Allah commanded Yaḥyā b. Zakariyyā with five words, that he act upon them, and that he command the Children of Israel to act upon them; and he nearly delayed, so ʿĪsā ﷺ said to him: You have indeed been commanded with five words, that you act upon them and command the Children of Israel to act upon them; so either you convey them, or I convey them. He said: O my brother, I fear that if you precede me, I will be punished or swallowed up. He said: So Yaḥyā gathered the Children of Israel in the Holy House until the mosque was full, and he sat upon the elevated place, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded me with five words, that I act upon them and command you to act upon them. The first of them is that you worship Allah, not associating anything with Him, for the likeness of that is the likeness of a man who bought a servant from his pure wealth with silver or gold, and the servant began to work and render his produce to other than his master; which of you would be pleased that his servant be like that? And indeed Allah created you and provided for you, so worship Him and do not associate anything with Him. And I command you with prayer, for Allah sets His face toward His servant as long as he does not turn away, so when you pray, do not turn away. And I command you with fasting, for the likeness of that is the likeness of a man with a pouch of musk among a band, all of them find the scent of musk, and indeed the breath of the fasting person is more fragrant to Allah than the scent of musk. And I command you with charity, for the likeness of that is the likeness of a man whom the enemy captured, and they bound his hand to his neck and brought him forward to strike his neck, so he said: Is there a way for me to ransom myself from you? And he began to ransom himself from them with little and much until he freed himself. And I command you with the remembrance of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, abundantly, for the likeness of that is the likeness of a man whom the enemy sought swiftly in his pursuit, so he came to a fortified fortress and fortified himself therein; and indeed the servant is most fortified against Satan when he is in the remembrance of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. He said: And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: And I command you with five things which Allah commanded me: with the congregation, hearing, obedience, emigration, and jihād in the path of Allah. For whoever departs from the congregation by a handspan has cast off the yoke of Islam from his neck, unless he returns. And whoever calls with the call of ignorance is among the refuse of Hell. They said: O Messenger of Allah, even if he fasts and prays? He said: Even if he fasts and prays and claims that he is a Muslim. Call the Muslims by their names, by what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, named them: the Muslims, the believers, the servants of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And from al-Rabīʿ b. Anas, who said: It was mentioned to us from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, among what they heard from the scholars of the Children of Israel, that Yaḥyā b. Zakariyyā was sent with five words. And he mentioned something similar to what preceded.
