✧ The Killing of Ibrāhīm b. ʿUthmān b. Nahīk In this year: Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad [b. ʿUthmān] b. Nahīk was killed. It is said: he was killed in the year eighty-eight. After the killing of the Barāmikah, al-Rashīd killed Ibrāhīm b. ʿUthmān b. Nahīk. The reason for his killing was that he often mentioned the Barāmikah and wept out of love for them, until he went beyond the bounds of weeping and entered the path of seeking vengeance. When he was alone with his slave-girls, drank, and became intoxicated, he would say: "Boy, my sword!" His servant would bring the sword, and he would draw it, then say: "Alas for Jaʿfar! Alas for my master! By God, I will surely kill your killer." When this action of his became frequent, his son ʿUthmān came to al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ and informed him. Al-Faḍl informed al-Rashīd, who said: "Bring him in." So he brought him in, and al-Rashīd said: "What is this that al-Faḍl has told me about you?" He informed him of his father's words and actions. Al-Rashīd said: "Did anyone else hear this with you?" He said: "Yes, his servant." So he summoned his servant in secret and questioned him, and he said: "He said that more than once." Al-Rashīd said: "It is not lawful for me to kill one of my close associates based on the words of a servant and a eunuch; perhaps they conspired together about this." He wanted to test Ibrāhīm, so he said to al-Faḍl: "When the wine is present, invite him. When he drinks, leave me alone with him." Al-Faḍl did that. When al-Rashīd was alone with him, he said: "O Ibrāhīm, how are you, and where is the place of secrets in your heart?" He said: "O my master, I am like the best of your slaves and the most obedient of your servants." He said: "I have something in my soul that I want to entrust to you, which has constricted my chest and kept me awake at night." He said: "Then I will conceal it from even my own self knowing it." He said: "Woe to you! I have regretted killing Jaʿfar b. Yaḥyā with a regret that I cannot describe. I wish I had left my kingdom and that he had remained for me. I have not found the taste of sleep since I parted from him, nor the pleasure of life since I killed him." When Ibrāhīm heard this, he let his tears flow and said: "May God have mercy on Abū al-Faḍl and pardon him. By God, O my master, you erred in killing him." Al-Rashīd said: "Arise, upon you be the curse of God, O son of a stinking woman!" He arose, not knowing what he was doing, and went to his son and said: "O my son, by God, my life is gone." It was only three nights until he was killed.
