ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam, Abū Zayyān Aṣbagh b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam, Abū Zayyān. ʿAwn b. ʿAbd Allāh reported from him, saying: Aṣbagh said to me: I heard from your father words by which God benefited me: “For the imam to err in pardoning is better than to err in punishing.” Aṣbagh died in Ramaḍān of this year. Ḥassān b. Ibrāhīm, Abū Hishām al-ʿAnazī al-Kūfī, judge of Kirmān Ḥassān b. Ibrāhīm, Abū Hishām al-ʿAnazī al-Kūfī, judge of Kirmān. He was born in the year 86. He saw Muḥārib b. Dithār, heard Hishām b. ʿUrwa and al-Thawrī, and ʿAffān b. Muslim narrated from him. Yaḥyā deemed him trustworthy. He died in this year at the age of one hundred. Salm al-Khāsir the poet Salm al-Khāsir the poet. He is Salm b. ʿAmr b. Ḥammād b. ʿAṭāʾ. It is said that he was a client of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ. And it is said: rather, a client of al-Mahdī. They differed as to why he was called al-Khāsir. Al-Yazīdī said: He inherited from his father one hundred thousand dirhams [and obtained from the praises of kings one hundred thousand dirhams] and spent all of it on literature [and its people]. Al-Aṣfahānī reported: He inherited from his father a muṣḥaf and sold it and bought with its price a ṭunbūr. Al-Ṣūlī mentioned that al-Rashīd said to him: Why were you called al-Khāsir? He said: As a boy I sold a muṣḥaf and bought with its price the poetry of Imruʾ al-Qays, though God later granted me memorization of the Qurʾān. He said to him: Then you are now al-Rābiḥ. He said: It was also said that one day they saw him in the market of notebooks having sold a muṣḥaf for the poetry of al-Aʿshā, and people said to him: By God, you are al-Khāsir. So it stuck to him. He said: He was highly capable in poetry, to the extent that he invented poetry on a single letter, something unprecedented. The least poetry heard from the Arabs was on two letters, such as the saying of Durayd b. al-Ṣimma: Yā laytanī fīhā jadhaʿ akhubbu fīhā wa-aḍaʿ Salm [al-Khāsir] composed for Mūsā al-Hādī poetry on a single letter, among it: Mūsā al-maṭar ghayth bakar thumma inhamar kam iʿtasar thumma iqtasar wa-kam qadar thumma ghafar ʿadl al-siyar bāqī al-athar khayr al-bashar farʿ Muḍar badr badar li-man naẓar huwa al-wazar li-man ḥaḍar wa-l-muftakhar li-man ghabar wa-l-mujtabir li-man ʿathar Al-Khaṭīb mentioned that he followed a disapproved path of frivolity, dissoluteness, and immorality. Then he stripped himself and abandoned that, so his condition became poor, and he grieved over that, and returned to worse than what he had been on before. He sold a muṣḥaf he owned and bought with its price a notebook containing poetry, and his story spread among the people, so they called him Salm al-Khāsir because of that. He was one of the excellent poets and was among the students of Bashshār. He began to compose poetry more delicate than his, so Bashshār became angry. Bashshār had said: Man rāqaba al-nāsa lam yaẓfar bi-ḥājatihi wa-fāza bi-l-ṭayyibāti al-fātiku al-lahiju And he said: Man rāqaba al-nāsa māta ghamman wa-fāza bi-l-ladhdhati al-jasūru Bashshār became angry and said: By God, my verse is gone. You take the meanings I labored over and clothe them in words lighter than my words!? I am not pleased with you. They kept pleading with him until he was pleased with him. From al-Jawwānī al-Hāshimī, who said: My father narrated to me, saying: Salm had earned wealth with his ode praising al-Mahdī, the beginning of which is: Ḥaḍara al-raḥīlu wa-shuddat al-aḥdāju wa-ḥadā bihinna mushammarun mizʿāju Sharibat bi-Makkata min dhurā baṭḥāʾihā māʾa al-nubuwwati laysa fīhi mizāju Al-Mahdī had given [Hārūn] b. Abī Ḥafṣa one hundred thousand dirhams for the ode whose beginning is: Ṭaraqatka zāʾiratan fa-ḥayyi khayālahā He wanted to give Salm less than this prize, but Salm swore that he would accept only one hundred thousand dirhams and one thousand dirhams, and said: Let the two odes be submitted to the people of learning so that they may judge by preferring my ode. So al-Mahdī sent him one hundred thousand dirhams and one thousand dirhams. When it reached the time of al-Rashīd, he composed his ode whose beginning is: Qul li-l-manāzili bi-l-kathībi al-aʿfari asqayta ghādiyata al-saḥābi al-mumṭiri Qad bāyaʿa al-thaqalāni Mahdiyya al-hudā li-Muḥammad ibn Zubaydata bint Jaʿfar Zubayda stuffed his mouth with pearls, and he sold them for twenty thousand dinars. This was when al-Rashīd gave allegiance to Muḥammad b. Zubayda. Salm died in the days of al-Rashīd, having accumulated wealth worth thirty-six thousand dinars, which he deposited with Abū al-Samrāʾ al-Ghassānī, and it remained with him. On the day of the feast, Ibrāhīm al-Mawṣilī came to al-Rashīd and sang to him and delighted him. He said: O Ibrāhīm, ask whatever you wish. He said: Yes, my lord, I ask for something that will not diminish you. He said: What is it? He said: Salm has died with no heir, and he left thirty-six thousand dinars with Abū al-Samrāʾ al-Ghassānī. Order him to pay it to me. So he sent to him to pay it to him, and he paid it. Later al-Jammāz and his father came seeking Salm's inheritance, claiming they were his relatives. In one narration: His estate was fifty thousand dinars. They mentioned that when Abū al-ʿAtāhiya said: Taʿālā Allāhu yā Salma b. ʿAmara wa-dhalla al-ḥirṣu aʿnāqa al-rijāli Salm became angry and said: He claims that I am greedy. Then he replied to him: Mā aqbaḥa al-tazhīda min wāʿiẓin yuzahhidu al-nāsa wa-lā yazhadu Law kāna fī tazhīdihi ṣādiqan aḍḥā wa-amsā baytuhu al-masjida Wa-rafaḍa al-dunyā fa-lam yalqahā wa-lam yaku yasʿā wa-yastarfidu [Yakhāfu an tanfadha arzāquhu wa-l-rizqu ʿinda Allāhi lā yanfadu] Wa-l-rizqu maqsūmun ʿalā mā tarā yanāluhu al-abyaḍu wa-l-aswadu Kullan yuwaffā rizqahu kāmilan man kaffa ʿan juhdin wa-man yajhadu Abū Haffān said: Salm received from the Barāmika alone twenty thousand dinars, and from al-Rashīd the like of it. Al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad — to whom al-ʿAbbāsiyya is attributed — was appointed over the Jazīra, and he went to al-Raqqa. Al-Rashīd ordered that it be furnished for him in the palace of the emirate, that implements be prepared for him there, that it be stocked with slaves, and that five million dirhams be carried to him. In the year 186 al-ʿAbbās died in Baghdad in Rajab. Al-Amīn prayed over him, and he was buried in al-ʿAbbāsiyya at the age of sixty-five years, six months, and sixteen days. He went to Syria and stood before Marwān and said: O Commander of the Faithful, I am a merchant who arrived with goods, and I was brought in to a certain person who bought them from me. He kept putting me off with the price until your messengers came and imprisoned him. If you see fit, bring me together with him and take my right for me. Marwān said to one of his servants: O boy, go with him to Ibrāhīm and tell him to pay this man his due. So he went with him to him. When he saw him, he said: O enemy of God, how long will you delay me, and whom have you ordered to pay me my money? He said: To the son of al-Ḥārithiyya. So he returned to the Shīʿa and informed them that Abū al-ʿAbbās was the Imam after him. In this year died Khālid b. al-Ḥārith, Bishr b. al-Mufaḍḍal, and Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad al-Fazārī.
