Translation

✧ The outbreak of al-Walīd b. Ṭarīf the Khārijite In the year one hundred and seventy-eight, al-Walīd b. Ṭarīf al-Taghlibī rose in al-Jazīrah, and he slew Ibrāhīm b. Khāzim b. Khuzaymah at Naṣībīn. Then al-Walīd's power strengthened, and he entered Armenia and besieged Khilāṭ for twenty days, and they ransomed themselves from him with thirty thousand. Then he marched to Adharbayjān, then to Ḥulwān and the land of al-Sawād, then he crossed to the west of the Tigris and made for the city of Balad, and they ransomed themselves from him with one hundred thousand. He wrought havoc in the land of al-Jazīrah, so al-Rashīd sent against him Yazīd b. Mazyad b. Zāʾidah al-Shaybānī, who was the nephew of Maʿn b. Zāʾidah. Al-Walīd said: You will know, O Yazīd, when we meet on the bank of al-Zāb, which young man shall prevail. Yazīd began to draw him out and play for time with him. The Barāmikah were ill-disposed toward Yazīd, so they said to al-Rashīd: "Yazīd is only holding back from al-Walīd because of kinship, for both of them are of Wāʾil," and they belittled the affair of al-Walīd. So al-Rashīd wrote him an angry letter, saying to him: "Had you dispatched one of the servants, he would have done more than you are doing. But you are dissembling and partisan. I swear by God, if you delay engaging him, I shall send against you one who will bring me your head." He met al-Walīd on the evening of a Thursday in the month of Ramaḍān in the year one hundred and seventy-nine. It is said that he suffered extreme thirst until he put his signet ring in his mouth and began to chew it, saying: "O God, it is a severe hardship, so conceal it!" And he said to his companions: "May my father and mother be your ransom. They are only Khārijites, and they have one charge. So stand firm. When their charge is spent, then charge upon them, for if they are routed they will not return." It was as he said. They made a charge upon them, and Yazīd and those of his kinsmen with him stood firm. Then he charged upon them and they were scattered. It is said that Asad b. Yazīd was very much like his father, and nothing distinguished between them except a blow on Yazīd's face that ran from the hairline of his head, slanting across his forehead. Asad used to wish for one like it, and a blow fell upon him, and he put his face out from the shield, and it struck him in that very place. It is said that had it been traced against the blow of his father, it would not have exceeded it. Yazīd pursued al-Walīd b. Ṭarīf and overtook him and struck off his head. Some poet said: Wāʾil, some of them kill others; nothing blunts iron except iron. When al-Walīd was killed, his sister Laylā bt. al-Ṭarīf came upon them at dawn, equipped, with the coat of mail upon her. She began charging upon the people, and she was recognized. Yazīd said: "Leave her!" Then he went out to her and struck with the spear the croup of her horse, then said: "Go away, may God make you distant! You have disgraced the clan." She was ashamed and withdrew, saying in elegy for al-Walīd: At Tall Tabāthā is the trace of a grave, as though it were upon a lofty peak above the mountains. It enfolded Ḥātimī generosity and bounty, and the assault of a bold one and a discerning heart. Indeed, may God curse the miserly, how they concealed a youth who was not niggardly in kindness. If Yazīd b. Mazyad brought him down, how many horses and ranks did he scatter! Oh, alas for my people, for calamities and ruin, and a time that presses hard upon the noble and is harsh! The full moon has fallen from among the stars, and the sun was about to be eclipsed after him. O trees of al-Khābūr, why are you in leaf, as though you did not grieve for Ibn Ṭarīf? A youth who loved no provision except from piety, and no wealth except from spears and swords, And no horses except every smooth, lean, marked mare, and every stallion known for his forelegs. Do not grieve, O two sons of Ṭarīf, for I see death descending upon every noble one. We have lost you as one loses the spring; would that we had ransomed you from our dark multitude with thousands. Muslim b. al-Walīd said concerning the killing of al-Walīd and the gentleness of Yazīd in fighting him, among a qaṣīdah of his, these verses: He smiles when war bares its teeth, smiling when the face of the brave horseman changes. Standing over souls on a day of dust, as though he were a fate hastening toward a hope. He attains by gentleness what men weary of, like death, hastening, yet coming at leisure. (These are very fine.)
