✧ The emergence of Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh in al-Daylam (In the year 176 AH, Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan appeared in al-Daylam.) His strength grew formidable, his forces multiplied, and people came to him from the garrison cities. Al-Rashīd was distressed by this, so he dispatched al-Faḍl b. Yaḥyā against him with fifty thousand men, appointing him over Jurjān, Ṭabaristān, al-Rayy, and other regions, and he carried funds with him. He corresponded with Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh, treated him gently, warned him, advised him, and gave him hope. Al-Faḍl encamped at al-Ṭālaqān, in a place called Ashabb, and kept up his letters to Yaḥyā. He also corresponded with the ruler of al-Daylam, offering him a million dirhams to facilitate Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh's departure. Yaḥyā responded to the peace overture on condition that al-Rashīd write him a safe-conduct in his own hand, witnessed by the judges, the jurists, and the leading men of Banū Hāshim and their elders, among them ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAlī. Al-Rashīd agreed to that and was pleased by it, and al-Faḍl's standing with him grew great. He sent the safe-conduct along with gifts and rarities. Yaḥyā then came with al-Faḍl to Baghdād, and al-Rashīd received him, honored him, and gave him lavish gifts. The Barāmika served him with great service, such that Yaḥyā b. Khālid personally attended to serving him. Al-Faḍl's stature with al-Rashīd increased greatly because of this deed, since he had worked to reconcile the Abbasids and the Fatimids. Marwān b. Abī Ḥafṣah praised al-Faḍl b. Yaḥyā for reconciling the Abbasids and the Fatimids. Concerning that, Marwān b. Abī Ḥafṣah said, praising al-Faḍl b. Yaḥyā and thanking him for this effort: You have triumphed, so may no Barmakid hand be paralyzed With which you mended the rift between Hāshim At a time when its mending had defeated the menders. So they desisted and said, “It cannot be mended.” Thus your two hands have won a feat Of glory whose memory will remain at the great gatherings. The arrow of kingship has not ceased to come out winning For you whenever the arrows of the lots are gathered. They said: Then al-Rashīd became hostile toward Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥasan and changed toward him. It is said that he imprisoned him, then al-Rashīd summoned him while the two judges Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan and Abū al-Bakhtarī were present, along with groups of Hāshimites and others. He brought out the safe-conduct he had sent him, and asked Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan whether this safe-conduct was valid. He said, “Yes,” so al-Rashīd became angry with him. Abū al-Bakhtarī said, “This is not valid, so judge concerning it as you wish.” He tore up the safe-conduct, and Abū al-Bakhtarī spat on it. Al-Rashīd turned to Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh and said, “Well, well,” smiling the smile of an angry man, and said, “People claim that we have poisoned you.” Yaḥyā said to him, “O Commander of the Faithful, we have kinship, blood ties, and rights. Why do you punish me and imprison me?” Al-Rashīd softened toward him. But Bakkār b. Muṣʿab b. Thābit b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr interjected, saying, “O Commander of the Faithful, do not be deceived by this man's words, for he is a rebellious dissident. This is only cunning and malice from him. He has corrupted our city against us and openly displayed disobedience there.” Yaḥyā said to him, “And who are you, may God grant you well-being? Your father emigrated to Madinah with my forefathers and the forefathers of this man.” Then Yaḥyā said, “O Commander of the Faithful, the people are only us and you. By God, O Commander of the Faithful, this man came to me when my brother Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh was killed and said, ‘May God curse his killer!’ He recited to me an elegy of about twenty verses, and said, ‘If you move in this matter, I will be the first to pledge allegiance to you. What prevents you from going to al-Baṣrah while our hands are with your hand?’” He said: The face of the Zubayrid changed, and he denied it, starting to swear binding oaths that Yaḥyā was lying about that. Al-Rashīd grew stern and said to Yaḥyā, “Do you remember anything from the elegy?” He said, “Yes,” and recited part of it to him. The Zubayrid increased his denial. Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh said to him, “Then say: If I am lying, then I am free of God's power and strength, and may God leave me to my own power and strength.” He refused to swear that, so al-Rashīd insisted and became angry with him, and he swore it. No sooner had he left al-Rashīd's presence than God struck him with hemiplegia, and he died on the spot. It is also said that his wife covered his face with a pillow and killed him, and God knows best. Then al-Rashīd released Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥasan and gave him a hundred thousand dinars. It is said that he had imprisoned him for only part of a day. The total amount of money that reached him from al-Rashīd was four hundred thousand dinars from the treasury. He lived after all that only one month, then died, may God have mercy on him and honor his resting place.
