Translation

✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Al-Ḥakam b. Fuḍayl, Abū Muḥammad al-Wāsiṭī al-Ḥakam b. Fuḍayl, Abū Muḥammad al-Wāsiṭī. He settled in al-Madāʾin and narrated there from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ and Yaʿlā b. ʿAṭāʾ. Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim b. al-Qāsim narrated from him. Al-Ḥakam was trustworthy in the view of the people of his time. He died in this year. Shaʿwānah the devout worshipper Shaʿwānah the devout worshipper. She was given to much worship, intense fear, and prolonged weeping. Al-Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ asked her to supplicate, and she said: "O Fuḍayl, is there not between you and God that which, if you call upon Him, He will answer you?" So al-Fuḍayl sobbed and fell down in a swoon. On the authority of Mālik b. Ḍaygham, he said: One day my father said to me: "Come with us so that we may go to this righteous woman and look at her," meaning Shaʿwānah. So I set out, I and Abū Hammām, and we entered upon her. She said: "Welcome, O son of one whom we have not seen but whom we love. By God, O my son, I do long for your father, and nothing prevents me from visiting him except that I fear I would distract him from the service of his Lord. And the service of his Lord is more worthy for him than conversing with Shaʿwānah." Then she said: "And who is Shaʿwānah, and what is Shaʿwānah?! A sinful black slave woman." Then she began to weep and did not cease weeping until we left her and departed. On the authority of Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd al-Malik, he said: Shaʿwānah and her husband arrived in Makkah, and they began to circumambulate and pray. When he grew weary or tired he sat down, and she sat behind him. He would say while sitting: "I am the thirsty one from love of You, never quenched." And she would say: "For every ailment a remedy grows in the mountains, but the remedy of lovers has not grown in the mountains." Al-Layth b. Saʿd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Layth b. Saʿd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū al-Ḥārith. It is said that he was a client of Khālid b. Thābit al-Fahmī. He was born in Qarqashandah, a village in lower Egypt, in the year ninety-four. He narrated from ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī Rabāḥ, al-Zuhrī, and Nāfiʿ, among others. Hushaym, Ibn al-Mubārak, and others narrated from him. He was a virtuous, trustworthy, and generous jurist, who memorized the Qurʾān and knew ḥadīth, Arabic, and poetry. On the authority of Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. ʿIyāḍ, he said: I heard Ḥarmalah b. Yaḥyā say: I heard Ibn Wahb say: Mālik [b. Anas] wrote to al-Layth [b. Saʿd]: "I want to bring my daughter to her husband, and I would like you to send me something of safflower." He said: So al-Layth sent him thirty camel-loads of safflower. He dyed for his daughter, sold some of it for five hundred dinars, and a surplus remained with him. On the authority of Aḥmad b. ʿUthmān al-Nasāʾī, he said: I heard Qutaybah b. Saʿīd say: I heard Shuʿayb b. al-Layth say: I went out with my father on pilgrimage, and he arrived in Madinah. Mālik b. Anas sent him a platter with fresh dates, and he placed on the platter a thousand dinars and returned it to him. Qutaybah b. Saʿīd said: Al-Layth b. Saʿd used to receive an income of twenty thousand dinars every year. He said: "Zakat has never become obligatory upon me." He gave Ibn Lahīʿah a thousand dinars, gave Mālik b. Anas a thousand dinars, and gave Manṣūr b. ʿAmmār a thousand dinars and a slave girl worth three hundred dinars. He said: A woman came to al-Layth [b. Saʿd] and said: "O Abū al-Ḥārith, my son is ill and he has craved honey." He said: "O boy, give her a mirṭ of honey." A mirṭ is one hundred and twenty riṭls. Al-Layth died in Shaʿbān of this year. Ibn Khillikān related that on the day al-Layth died, a speaker was heard saying: "Al-Layth is gone, so no Layth remains for you, and knowledge departed as a stranger and was buried." They turned around but saw no one. Al-Mundhir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mundhir b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid b. Ḥizām al-Mundhir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mundhir b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid b. Ḥizām al-Mundhir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mundhir b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid b. Ḥizām. He was among the noble leaders of Quraysh and people of virtue. On the authority of al-Zubayr b. Bakkār, he said: My uncle Muṣʿab narrated to me, he said: Al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ informed me, he said: The Commander of the Faithful al-Mahdī summoned him to the judgeship of Madinah, and I never saw a man seek exemption from it as he did. He said to the Commander of the Faithful: "I was once appointed to an office, and I feared that I might not have emerged safely from it, so I gave God a pledge that I would never hold office again. And I seek refuge for the Commander of the Faithful, by God, and for myself, from his burdening me to break God's pledge." The Commander of the Faithful [al-Mahdī] said: "By God, you gave this from yourself before I summoned you." He said: "By God, I gave this from myself before you summoned me." So he said: "I have exempted you." Al-Zubayr said: Someone other than my uncle from Quraysh narrated to me, he said: The Commander of the Faithful al-Mahdī offered him one hundred thousand dirhams to take on the judgeship for him, but he sought exemption. He said: "I will not exempt you until you point me to a person whom I can appoint as judge." So he pointed him to ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿImrān, and he appointed him. In those days al-Mundhir b. ʿAbd Allāh and his father made the pilgrimage, and he hired a mount for his father for the pilgrimage, but could not find means to hire one for himself, so he made the pilgrimage on foot. Al-Mundhir died in this year, may God have mercy on him. In this year also died al-Musayyab b. Zuhayr b. ʿUmar b. Muslim al-Ḍabbī. It is also said he died in the year seventy-six. He was in charge of the shurṭah of al-Manṣūr and al-Mahdī, and al-Mahdī appointed him over Khurāsān.
