Tarikh (al-Tabari) 2904

Then the year 156 AH began

Translation

✧ Rabāḥ b. Abī Yazīd al-Lakhmī: He was from the people of Ifrīqiyya, and was a learned ascetic whose worship was proverbial. He was the brother of Qaḥdham b. Yazīd, who was a devotee in Alexandria. Ruʾba b. al-ʿAjjāj, whose name al-ʿAjjāj was ʿAbd Allāh b. Ruʾba b. Labīd b. Ṣakhr, and whose kunya was Abū al-Jaḥḥāf and Abū al-ʿAjjāj: He transmitted from Abū al-Shaʿthāʾ, from Abū Hurayra, from the Messenger of God ﷺ. He was one of the foremost rajaz poets of Islam and their eloquent ones, a Bedouin who settled in al-Baṣra and praised the Umayyads and the Abbasids. He died in the days of al-Manṣūr. The leading authorities of language took from him and used his poetry as evidence. Al-ruʾba is a name applied to several things, among them thick milk, the stallion's semen, a need, and a passing hour of the night, and other things. Yūnus al-Naḥwī used to say: I have never seen an Arab more eloquent than Ruʾba; Maʿadd b. ʿAdnān was not more eloquent than he. Ruʾba used to eat mice, and was reproached for that. He said: They are cleaner than your domestic fowls and your chickens that eat dung. Does the mouse eat anything but clean wheat and the finest of food? When he died, al-Khalīl b. Aḥmad said: Today we have buried poetry, language, and eloquence. Ḥamza b. Ḥabīb al-Zayyāt, whose kunya was Abū ʿUmāra, a client of the family of ʿIkrima b. Ribʿī al-Taymī: He used to bring oil from al-Kūfa to Ḥulwān, and bring cheese and walnuts from Ḥulwān to al-Kūfa. He was a master of the Qurʾān and the laws of inheritance, truthful and adhering to the Sunna. He transmitted with chains from al-Aʿmash. Jarīr b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd said: Ḥamza b. Ḥabīb passed by us and asked for water, so I brought him water. He said: Are you one of those who attend our recitation? I said: Yes. He said: I have no need of your water. He said: Khalaf b. Hishām al-Bazzāz informed us, saying: Sulaym b. ʿĪsā said to me: I entered upon Ḥamza b. Ḥabīb al-Zayyāt and found him rubbing his cheeks in the earth and weeping. I said: I seek refuge for you in God. He said: Last night I saw in a dream as if the Resurrection had come, and the reciters of the Qurʾān were summoned. I was among those present. I heard a speaker say with sweet speech: None shall enter upon me except one who acted by the Qurʾān. So I retreated backward, but my name was called: Where is Ḥamza b. Ḥabīb al-Zayyāt? I said: At your call, O caller of God. An angel came to me and said: Say, at your call, O God, at your call. I said as he told me. He brought me into a house full of the murmur of the Qurʾān. I stood trembling. I heard a speaker say: No harm upon you; recite and ascend. I turned my face and saw a pulpit of white pearls, its two sides of yellow rubies, its steps of green chrysolite. He said to me: Recite Sūrat al-Anʿām. I recited, not knowing upon whom I was reciting, until I reached sixty verses. When I reached: "He is the Subduer over His servants" (6:18), he said to me: O Ḥamza, am I not the Subduer over My servants? I said: Yes. He said: You have spoken truly; recite. I recited until I completed it. Then he said to me: Recite. I recited al-Aʿrāf until I reached its end, and I gestured to the ground for prostration. He said to me: Enough of what has passed; do not prostrate, O Ḥamza. Who taught you this recitation? I said: Sulaymān. He said: You have spoken truly. Who taught Sulaymān? I said: Yaḥyā. He said: Yaḥyā has spoken truly. Upon whom did Yaḥyā recite? I said: Upon Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī. He said: Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī has spoken truly. Who taught Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān? I said: The cousin of your Prophet, ʿAlī. He said: ʿAlī has spoken truly. Who taught ʿAlī? I said: Your Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. He said: And who taught My Prophet? He said: I said: Gabriel ﷺ. He said: And who taught Gabriel? I fell silent. He said to me: O Ḥamza, say: You. I said: I do not dare to say You. He said: Say: You. I said: You. He said: You have spoken truly, O Ḥamza. By the right of the Qurʾān, I will surely honor the people of the Qurʾān, especially when they act by the Qurʾān. O Ḥamza, the Qurʾān is My speech, and I love no one as I love the people of the Qurʾān. Draw near, O Ḥamza. I drew near, and He anointed me with costly perfume and said: I will not do this to you alone; I have done so to your peers, those above you and those below you. Whoever recites the Qurʾān as you have recited it, he adds nothing thereby but to Me. What I have stored for you, O Ḥamza, with Me is more. Tell your companions of My place in My love for the people of the Qurʾān and My action toward them, for they are the chosen, the best. O Ḥamza, by My might and My majesty, I will not punish with the Fire a tongue that recited the Qurʾān, nor a heart that understood it, nor an ear that heard it, nor an eye that looked at it. I said: Glory be to You, glory be to You, O Lord. He said: O Ḥamza, where are those who look at the copies of the Qurʾān? I said: O Lord, are they memorizers? He said: No, but I preserve it for them until the Day of Resurrection; when they meet Me, I will raise for them a degree for every verse. Do you blame me for weeping and rubbing myself in the dust? Ḥamza died at Ḥulwān in this year. To him are attributed the long vowel prolongations in recitation, and because of them some imams spoke against him. In it died ʿAbd Allāh b. Shawdhab, and ʿUmar b. Dharr. Saʿīd b. Abī ʿArūba, Abū al-Naḍr al-Baṣrī, whose father Abū ʿArūba was Mihrān, a client of Banū ʿAdī b. Yashkur: He heard al-Naḍr b. Anas and others. He was a prolific transmitter of hadith, except that he became confused at the end of his life. He died in this year. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ziyād b. Anʿum, Abū Khālid al-Ifrīqī: He heard Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥubulī and others. Sufyān al-Thawrī and Ibn Lahīʿa transmitted from him. He was the first child born in Ifrīqiyya in Islam. He held the judiciary there for Marwān b. Muḥammad, and came as a delegate to al-Manṣūr for the oath of allegiance of the people of Ifrīqiyya, and complained to him of the oppression of the governors. Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh said: Oppression from the sultan appeared in Ifrīqiyya. When the descendants of al-ʿAbbās rose, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ziyād came to Abū Jaʿfar and complained to him of the governors in his land. He stayed at his gate for months, then entered upon him. He said: What brought you? He said: Oppression has appeared in our land, and I came to inform you, but I find that oppression comes forth from your own house. Abū Jaʿfar became angry and was about to punish him, then ordered him to be expelled. From ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ziyād b. Anʿum, who said: Abū Jaʿfar sent for me, and I came to him. I entered while al-Rabīʿ was standing at his head. He drew me near and said: O ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, how were the regions of our governance you passed through until you reached us? I said: O Commander of the Faithful, I saw evil deeds and widespread oppression, which I thought was farthest of lands from you. But the closer I came to you, the greater the matter became. He bowed his head for a long time, then raised it to me and said: How can I find the right men? I said: Did not ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz say: The governor is like a market to which what sells in it is brought. If he is righteous, they bring him their righteousness; if he is wicked, they bring him their wickedness. He said: He bowed his head for a long time. Al-Rabīʿ gestured to me to leave, so I left and did not return to him. Ibn al-Jawzī, may God have mercy on him, said: It was said to Aḥmad b. Ṣāliḥ al-Ḥāfiẓ: Do you use the hadith of al-Ifrīqī as evidence? He said: Yes, he is trustworthy, and I reject those who speak against him. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said: I only reject his hadiths. Ibn al-Jawzī said: In this year he died, having passed the age of one hundred. ʿĀmir b. Ismāʿīl al-Muslī: He died in the City of Peace, and al-Manṣūr prayed over him, and he was buried in the cemetery of Quraysh. Qabāth b. Razīn b. Ḥumayd b. Ṣāliḥ, Abū Hāshim: He transmitted from ʿAlī b. Rabāḥ and ʿIkrima. Al-Layth b. Saʿd, Ibn Lahīʿa, Ibn al-Mubārak, and Ibn Wahb transmitted from him. He was the imam of the mosque of Egypt, teaching the Qurʾān in its congregational mosque. He died in this year. Al-Haytham b. Muʿāwiya: He governed al-Baṣra and other places for al-Manṣūr. He died suddenly in this year while he was on the belly of a slave girl of his, and al-Manṣūr prayed over him, and he was buried in the cemetery of Quraysh.
