Chapter mentioning a group of the prophets of the Israelites after Dāwūd and Sulaymān
Abī al-Hudhayl, who said: Bukht Naṣṣar trained two lions and cast them into a pit. Then he brought Dāniyāl and cast him upon them, but they did not stir him. He remained as long as Allāh willed. Then he craved what humans crave of food and drink, so Allāh revealed to Armiyā, who was in Syria: 'Prepare food and drink for Dāniyāl.' He said: 'O Lord, I am in the Holy Land while Dāniyāl is in the land of Bābil, in the land of Iraq.' Allāh revealed to him: 'Prepare what We have commanded you, for We shall send one who will carry you and carry what you have prepared.' He did so, and He sent to him one who carried him and carried what he had prepared until he stood at the head of the pit and said: 'Dāniyāl, Dāniyāl.' He said: 'Who is this?' He said: 'I am Armiyā.' He said: 'What brings you?' He said: 'Your Lord sent me to you.' He said: 'Has my Lord remembered me?' He said: 'Yes.' Dāniyāl said: 'Praise be to Allāh, who does not forget one who remembers Him; praise be to Allāh, who does not disappoint one who hopes in Him; praise be to Allāh, who, when one trusts in Him, does not entrust him to another; praise be to Allāh, who rewards kindness with kindness; praise be to Allāh, who rewards patience with deliverance; praise be to Allāh, who removes our distress after our affliction; praise be to Allāh, who is our trust when our thoughts turn evil of our deeds; praise be to Allāh, who is our hope when all means are cut off from us.' What the Muslims found at the conquest of Tustar and the supplication of the Prophet Dāniyāl Abū al-ʿĀliyah said: When we conquered Tustar, we found in the treasury of the house of al-Hurmuzān a bed on which was a dead man, at his head a codex. We took the codex and carried it to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, who summoned Kaʿb for it, and he copied it in Arabic. I was the first Arab man to read it; I read it like I read this Qurʾān. I said to Abū al-ʿĀliyah: 'What was in it?' He said: 'Your biographies, your affairs, the tones of your speech, and what is to come.' I said: 'What did you do with the man?' He said: 'By day we dug thirteen separate graves, and when night came we buried him and leveled all the graves, to conceal him from the people so they would not exhume him.' I said: 'What do they hope from him?' He said: 'When the sky withheld rain from them, they would bring out his bed and be granted rain.' I said: 'Who did you think the man was?' He said: 'A man called Dāniyāl.' I said: 'How long had he been dead when you found him?' He said: 'Three hundred years.' I said: 'Had nothing changed of him?' He said: 'No, except some hairs at the back of his neck. The flesh of prophets is not consumed by the earth nor eaten by beasts.' This is a sound chain to Abū al-ʿĀliyah, but if the date of his death is preserved as three hundred years, then he is not a prophet but a righteous man, because between ʿĪsā b. Maryam and the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ there is no prophet, according to the text of the ḥadīth in al-Bukhārī, and the interval between them was four hundred years, though it is said six hundred, and it is said six hundred and twenty years. His death may have been eight hundred years earlier, which is close to the time of Dāniyāl if he actually was Dāniyāl, for he may have been another man, either one of the prophets or the righteous. But the speculation came close that he was Dāniyāl because Dāniyāl had been taken by the king of Persia and remained with him imprisoned, as mentioned earlier. It is related with a sound chain to Abū al-ʿĀliyah that his nose was a span long, and from Anas b. Mālik with a good chain that his nose was a cubit long. On this basis, he may have been one of the earlier prophets before these periods. And Allāh knows best. From Abū al-Ashʿath al-Aḥmarī, who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Dāniyāl prayed to his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, that the nation of Muḥammad would bury him.' When Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī conquered Tustar, he found him in a coffin, his veins and arteries pulsing. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ had said: 'Whoever leads to Dāniyāl, give him glad tidings of Paradise.' The one who led to him was a man called Ḥurqūṣ. Abū Mūsā wrote to ʿUmar with his news, and ʿUmar wrote to him: 'Bury him and send for Ḥurqūṣ, for the Prophet ﷺ gave him glad tidings of Paradise.' From ʿAnbasah b. Saʿīd, who was a scholar, who said: Abū Mūsā found with Dāniyāl a codex, a jar containing fat, dirhams, and his ring. Abū Mūsā wrote of that to ʿUmar, and ʿUmar wrote to him: 'As for the codex, send it to us; as for the fat, send us some of it and order the Muslims with you to seek healing from it; divide the dirhams among them; and as for the ring, we grant it to you.' Ibn Abī al-Dunyā related through more than one chain that when Abū Mūsā found him and they mentioned to him that he was Dāniyāl, he embraced him, hugged him, and kissed him. He wrote to ʿUmar mentioning his affair, and that he found with him money placed nearby, about ten thousand dirhams. Whoever came borrowed from it; if he returned it, well and good, otherwise he fell ill. With him was a case for books. ʿUmar ordered that he be washed with water and lote leaves, shrouded and buried, and his grave concealed so no one would know it. He ordered the money to be returned to the treasury, the case to be brought to him, and he granted him his ring. It is related from Abū Mūsā that he ordered four prisoners to dam a stream and dig a grave in its middle, and he buried him in it. Then he brought the four prisoners forward and struck their necks, so no one knew the place of his grave except Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī ؓ. From ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī al-Zinād, from his father, who said: I saw in the hand of Abū Burdah b. Abī Mūsā al-Ashʿarī a ring whose bezel was engraved with two lions between them a man, licking that man. Abū Burdah said: 'This is the ring of that dead man whom the people of this town claimed was Dāniyāl. Abū Mūsā took it the day he buried him.' Abū Burdah said: 'Abū Mūsā asked the scholars of that village about the engraving on the ring, and they said: "The king under whose authority Dāniyāl lived was approached by astrologers and men of knowledge, who said to him: 'On such-and-such a night a boy will be born who will damage your kingdom and corrupt it.' The king said: 'By Allāh, no boy will remain that night but I will kill him.' Yet they took Dāniyāl and cast him into the lions' thicket, and the lion and his lioness passed the night licking him and did not harm him. His mother came and found them licking him, and Allāh saved him by that until he attained what he attained." Abū Burdah said: Abū Mūsā said: The scholars of that village said: "Dāniyāl engraved his own image and the image of the two lions licking him on the bezel of his ring, lest he forget the blessing of Allāh upon him in that." It is also said that when the building of the Holy House was completed, Armiyā asked his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, to take him to Himself, so he died, and Allāh delivered the Children of Israel from the land of Bābil at the hands of Dāniyāl. Dāniyāl was among those whom Bukht Naṣṣar took captive in the destruction of the Holy House. He cast him into a pit, bound, in a waterless desert, and threw in with him two beasts, and sealed the pit over him. He remained nine days. Allāh, Exalted be He, revealed to a prophet among the prophets of the Children of Israel: 'Go and bring Dāniyāl out of the pit.' He said: 'O Lord, who will guide me to him?' He said: 'Your mount will guide you to him.' He rode a she-donkey of his and went about until he said: 'O companion of the pit!' Dāniyāl answered him, and he said: 'You have made me hear, so what do you want?' He said: 'I am the messenger of Allāh to you, to bring you out of this place.' Dāniyāl said: 'Praise be to Allāh, who does not forget one who remembers Him; praise be to Allāh, who does not entrust one who relies upon Him to another; praise be to Allāh, who rewards kindness with kindness and evil with forgiveness.' Then he brought him out, and the two beasts walked with him, and Dāniyāl adjured them to return to the thicket. It has been related to us that Bukht Naṣṣar made an idol and ordered prostration to it, but Dāniyāl and his companions did not prostrate. He ordered them thrown into a furnace, but they did not burn. The dream of Bukht Naṣṣar and Dāniyāl's interpretation of it From Kaʿb, who said: The reason for the deliverance of the Children of Israel from the land of Bābil was that when Bukht Naṣṣar returned from the Holy House with the captives, among them Dāniyāl and ʿUzayr, he made the Children of Israel servants for a long time. He saw a dream that frightened him, so he summoned his soothsayers and sorcerers, told them of the distress he suffered in his dream, and asked them to interpret it. They said: 'Tell it to us.' He said: 'I have forgotten it, so tell me its interpretation.' They said: 'We cannot until you tell it.' He became angry and said: 'I give you three days. If you come to me with its interpretation, well and good; otherwise I will kill you.' This spread among the people and reached Dāniyāl while he was imprisoned. He said to the prison keeper: 'Would you mention me to the king? I have knowledge of his dream, and I hope you will gain favor with him through that.' He said: 'I fear the king's violence for you. Perhaps the distress of prison has made you seek relief with what you have no knowledge of.' Dāniyāl said: 'Do not fear for me, for I have a Lord who informs me of whatever I need.' The prison keeper went and told Bukht Naṣṣar, who summoned Dāniyāl. He entered, and no one entered upon him without prostrating to him. Dāniyāl stood and did not prostrate. The king said to those in the house: 'Leave.' They left. He said: 'What prevented you from prostrating to me?' He said: 'I have a Lord who gave me this knowledge on the condition that I not prostrate to anyone but Him. I feared that if I prostrated to you, the knowledge would be stripped from me and I would become in your hands an unlettered man from whom you would not benefit, and you would kill me. I considered leaving prostration easier than death, and the risk of prostration easier than the distress you are in, so I left prostration with that in mind.' Bukht Naṣṣar said: 'No one has ever been more trustworthy in my eyes than you, since you remained faithful to your god. The men I admire most are those who keep faith with their lords. Do you have knowledge of this dream I saw?' He said: 'Yes, I have its knowledge and interpretation.' He said: 'You saw a great idol, its feet on the earth and its head touching the sky, its upper part of gold, its middle of silver, its lower part of brass, its legs of iron, and its feet of clay. While you were looking at it, its beauty and the perfection of its making pleased you, and Allāh cast at it a stone from the sky that fell on the top of its head and crushed it, grinding it until its gold, silver, brass, iron, and clay were mixed together, so that it seemed to you that if humans and jinn gathered to separate one part from another they could not do so, and if the wind blew it would scatter it. 'You looked at the stone that was cast and saw it grow and spread until it filled all the earth, so that you saw nothing but sky and stone.' Bukht Naṣṣar said: 'You have spoken truly. This is the dream I saw. So what is its interpretation?' He said: 'As for the idol, it is different nations in the first, middle, and last ages. 'As for the gold, it is this time and this nation in which you are, and you are its king. As for the silver, your son after you will rule. As for the brass, it is the Byzantines. As for the iron, it is Persia. As for the clay, it is two nations ruled by two women, one in the east of Yemen and the other in the west of Syria. 'As for the stone cast at the idol, Allāh will cast down these nations with it at the end of time, and it will overcome them until an unlettered prophet from the Arabs is sent. Through him Allāh will subdue nations and religions as you saw the stone subdue the parts of the idol. He will make him prevail over religions and nations as you saw the stone prevail over the earth and spread through it until it filled it. By him Allāh establishes truth and obliterates falsehood, honors the humbled, and aids the oppressed.' Bukht Naṣṣar said: 'I know no one I have consulted since I assumed kingship who has surpassed me in anything but you, and no one holds a greater favor with me than you. I will reward you for your kindness. Choose one of three things I offer you: if you wish, I will send you back to your land and rebuild for you all that I destroyed; if you wish, I will write for you a safe-conduct by which you will be secure wherever my authority extends; if you wish, you may stay with me and I will share my wealth with you.' Dāniyāl said: 'As for sending me back to my land and rebuilding what you destroyed, it is a land upon which Allāh, Mighty and Majestic, has decreed ruin and upon its people annihilation until an appointed time. You cannot rebuild what Allāh has destroyed, nor can you hasten a term Allāh has set, until the decree reaches its term and this affliction that Allāh has written upon Īliyā and its people comes to an end. 'As for writing me a safe-conduct by which I would be secure wherever I go, it is not fitting for me to seek, along with Allāh's protection, the protection of a created being. 'As for sharing your wealth, that is more convenient for me this day, until a decree is carried out concerning us.' The status of Dāniyāl with Bukht Naṣṣar Bukht Naṣṣar gathered his sons, his retainers, and the people of knowledge and judgment of the kingdom, and said to them: 'This is a wise man through whom Allāh has relieved me of the distress I could not bear. I have decided to entrust your affairs to him. Take from his discipline and wisdom, and honor his due. If two messengers come to you, one from me and one from Dāniyāl, prefer his request over mine.' He said: Dāniyāl thus attained the best of stations with him, and he entrusted the management of his kingdom to him. When the nobles of Bābil saw that, they envied Dāniyāl and gathered before Bukht Naṣṣar, saying: 'There has never been on earth a king mightier than our king, nor a people more feared in the hearts of the earth's inhabitants than us, until the earth submitted to us. Now people covet us since you entrusted your kingdom to this Israelite slave.' He said: 'Do you blame me for turning to the wisest man on earth and seeking his help?' The destruction of Bukht Naṣṣar and the installment of his son in his place Then Bukht Naṣṣar perished by a gnat sent against him, and his son Balṭā ruled in his place. He acted with the violence of tyrants and drank wine in vessels of the Holy House that his father had plundered. Dāniyāl forbade him, then said to him: 'You will be killed within three days, and Allāh will strip away your kingdom.' He entered his house and locked his door, and summoned the most trusted man he had, saying: 'Keep to the threshold of my door. Let no one pass by you in these three days but you kill him, even if he says: I am the king.' When the three days had passed, the king rose and went out the door cheerfully. He passed by the guard, and the guard struck him with the sword while he said: 'I am the king,' and the guard said: 'You lie,' and killed him. The death of Dāniyāl The Children of Israel returned to the Holy House and remained in the best condition until Dāniyāl died. Then misdeeds and wrongdoing increased among them, and Allāh set over them Arṭāṣūs, who killed and took captives. This Dāniyāl is of the Children of Israel, and he is buried in al-Sūs. When Abū Mūsā conquered al-Sūs, he was led to the corpse of Dāniyāl. A man stood alongside his corpse, and Dāniyāl's knee was level with his head. He is not the elder Dāniyāl, for that one was between Nūḥ and Ibrāhīm.
