Translation
✧ Mention of the beginning of the affair of Shaqnā and his uprising in al-Andalus In this year there rose in the east of al-Andalus a man from the Berbers of Miknāsa who used to teach children. His name was Shaqnā b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid, and his mother was called Fāṭima. He claimed that he was from the descendants of Fāṭima (peace be upon her), then from the descendants of al-Ḥusayn ﷺ. He called himself ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad and settled in Shanta Bariyya. A great multitude of Berbers gathered around him, and his affair grew great. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī marched against him, but he did not stand firm against him and roamed about in the mountains. Whenever he felt safe, he spread out; and whenever he feared, he climbed the mountains to places where it was difficult to seek him. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān appointed Ḥabīb b. ʿAbd al-Malik over Ṭulayṭila, and Ḥabīb appointed Sulaymān b. ʿUthmān b. Marwān b. Abān b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān over Shanta Bariyya and ordered him to seek Shaqnā. Shaqnā descended upon Shanta Bariyya and seized Sulaymān and killed him. His affair grew intense, his fame spread, he gained control over the district of Qūriya, and he wrought corruption in the land. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī returned and raided him in person in the year 152 AH, but he did not stand firm against him, and his affair wearied him. He turned away from him and in the year 153 AH dispatched his mawlā Badr against him. Shaqnā fled and emptied his fortress Shaṭrān. Then ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī raided him in person in the year 154 AH, but Shaqnā did not stand firm against him. Then in the year 155 AH he dispatched Abū ʿUthmān ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUthmān against him. Shaqnā deceived him and corrupted his army against him. ʿUbayd Allāh fled, and Shaqnā plundered his camp and killed a group of Banū Umayya who were in the army. Also in the year 155 AH, after plundering the camp of ʿUbayd Allāh, Shaqnā marched to the fortress of the Hawwāriyyīn known as Madāʾin, where there was a governor appointed by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. Shaqnā employed a stratagem against him until he came out to him, and Shaqnā killed him and took his horses, his weapons, and all that was with him.
