✧ Those of the notables who died in this year. 799 - Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāʾah, Abū Arṭāʾah al-Nakhaʿī al-Kūfī. He heard ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī Rabāḥ and others. Narrated from him: Sufyān al-Thawrī, Hushaym, Ibn al-Mubārak, and Yazīd b. Hārūn. He was among the memorizers of hadith and among the jurists. He was asked for legal opinions when he was sixteen years old. He served as judge in al-Baṣrah, except that he was a mudallis, narrating from those he had not met, sometimes sending it as from Mujāhid, and sometimes from al-Zuhrī, though he had not met either of them. He was with al-Manṣūr in the building of his city, took charge of planning it, and set the qiblah of its mosque. This man had much arrogance and pride beyond bounds. Abū Qilābah said: I heard Abū ʿĀṣim say: The first to serve as judge for the Banū al-ʿAbbās in al-Baṣrah was al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāʾah. He came to the circle of al-Battī and sat in the middle of the circle. It was said to him, "Move up to the front." He said, "I am the front wherever I am." He said: And he said: "I am a man who loves honor." From Qays b. al-Walīd, who said: I heard Abū Yūsuf say: Al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāʾah would not attend Friday prayer or congregational prayer, and he would say: "I dislike crowding with the base people." Muḥammad b. Saʿd said: Al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāʾah was among the companions of Abū Jaʿfar, so he attached him to al-Mahdī. He remained with him until he died at al-Rayy while al-Mahdī was there during the caliphate of Abū Jaʿfar. He was weak in hadith. ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Jurayj al-Makkī, client of Umayyah b. Khālid. He was called Abū al-Walīd and Abū Khālid. He heard from Ṭāwūs a single question, and from Mujāhid two words regarding readings. He heard much from ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī Rabāḥ, ʿAmr b. Dīnār, Ibn al-Munkadir, and others. Narrated from him: al-Awzāʿī, al-Thawrī, Ibn al-Mubārak, and others. He was trustworthy. It is said that he was the first to compile books. ʿAṭāʾ used to say: Ibn Jurayj is the master of the youth of the people of the Hijaz. It was said to him: Whom should we ask after you? He said: This young man, if he lives — meaning Ibn Jurayj. ʿAbd al-Razzāq said: When I saw Ibn Jurayj, I knew that he feared [God], and I never saw anyone with better prayer than him. Mālik said: Ibn Jurayj was a man of the night. ʿAbd al-Razzāq said: The people of Makkah say that Ibn Jurayj took the prayer from ʿAṭāʾ, and ʿAṭāʾ took it from Abū al-Zubayr, and Abū al-Zubayr took it from Abū Bakr, and Abū Bakr took it from the Prophet ﷺ. ʿAbd al-Razzāq said: Ibn Jurayj was excellent in prayer. He died in this year. Thus said Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, Makkī b. Ibrāhīm, and Khalīfah b. Khayyāṭ. ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī said: In the year one hundred fifty-one. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿIjlī said: Year one hundred forty-nine. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Saʿīd b. Abjar the physician. He reported with chains from Abū al-Ṭufayl ʿĀmir b. Wāʾilah, Dharr, al-Shaʿbī, and others. He was extremely scrupulous, especially in his speech, and he was among those who wept much. From ʿAbd al-Malik b. Abjar, who said: There is no one among people except he is tested with well-being to see how he is grateful — or afflicted to see how he is patient. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Sulaymān, Abū Muḥammad al-Rāsibī. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Salmān said: I heard Dahtham — and he was among the devoted worshippers — say: The day on which I did not go to ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz I would be cheated. One day I was late to him, then I came to him, and he said: What delayed you? I said: Good. He said: In what state? I said: Family concerns occupied us; I was seeking something for them. [He said:] Did you find it for them? I said: No. He said: Come, let us supplicate. He said: So he supplicated and I said amen, and I supplicated and he said amen. Then we rose to leave, and behold, by God, dinars and dirhams were scattering into our laps. He said: Take them. And he went on without turning to me. He said: So I took them, and they were one hundred dinars and one hundred dirhams. Muḥammad said: I said to him: What did you do with them? He said: I withheld my family's food for a week so that concern for anything of this world's goods would not distract me from His worship, gratitude, and service. Then I spent them, by God, in the way of God. Wāqid al-Ṣaffār said: One day ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Sulaymān supplicated for a crippled man who was in his gathering, and his brothers said amen. He said: By God, the crippled man did not return to his family except walking on his own two feet. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿUmayr said: It was said to ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Rāsibī — and Rābiʿah used to call him the master of the worshippers — What remains of what you enjoy? He said: A basement in which I can be alone. Muqātil b. Sulaymān b. Bishr, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Balkhī. He came to Baghdad and narrated there from ʿAṭiyyah al-ʿAwfī, Saʿīd al-Maqburī, al-Ḍaḥḥāk, ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, and others. He compiled the exegeses of the people and made them his own. He narrated from al-Ḍaḥḥāk, but al-Ḍaḥḥāk had died four years before Muqātil was born. Ibn ʿUyaynah said: I said to him: Why do you narrate from al-Ḍaḥḥāk when they claim that you did not hear from him? He said: The door was closed upon me and upon him. Ibn ʿUyaynah said: I said to myself: The door of the city. Aḥmad b. Sayyār used to say: Muqātil is suspect and abandoned in hadith; he spoke about the divine attributes with what is not permissible. Wakīʿ said: Muqātil was a liar, so we did not hear from him. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nasāʾī said: Muqātil is among those known for fabricating hadith upon the Messenger of God ﷺ. Al-Bukhārī said: Muqātil is nothing at all. Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar b. ʿAlī said: Muqātil is a liar, abandoned in hadith. Al-Sājī said likewise. Muqātil died in this year. Masʿūd al-Ḍarīr, Abū Juhayr al-Baṣrī. Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī said: Mālik b. Dīnār said: Come with me, O Ṣāliḥ, to the cemetery, for I have promised a group of my brothers to meet Abū Juhayr Masʿūd al-Ḍarīr. So he greeted him. Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī said: This Abū Juhayr was a man who had devoted himself to a corner where he worshipped, and he would not enter al-Baṣrah except on Friday at the time of prayer, then he would return immediately. He said: So I went early to the appointed place with Mālik at the cemetery. I came to Mālik and he had preceded me, and with him was Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ, and there were Thābit al-Bunānī and Ḥabīb. When I saw them gathered, I said: This, by God, is a day of joy. He said: So we set out intending Abū Juhayr. He said: Whenever Mālik passed a clean spot, he would say: O Thābit, pray here; perhaps it will testify for you tomorrow. He said: So Thābit would pray. He said: Then we went on until we came to his place and asked about him, and they said: He will come out now for prayer. He said: So we waited, and a man came out to us such that if you wished you could say he had been raised from his grave. He said: A man jumped up, took his hand, and stood him at the door of the mosque. He paused a little, then entered the mosque and prayed as much as God willed, then he led the prayer and we prayed with him. When he finished his prayer, he sat like one distressed. The people came one after another to greet him. Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ stepped forward and greeted him, and he returned the greeting and said: Who are you? I do not recognize your voice. He said: I am from the people of al-Baṣrah. He said: What is your name, may God have mercy on you? He said: I am Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ. He said: Welcome, welcome. You are the one about whom these people — and he gestured with his hand toward al-Baṣrah — say that you are the best of them. May your father be blessed if you can bear that gratitude. Sit. So he sat. Then Thābit al-Bunānī stood and greeted him, and he returned the greeting and said: Who are you, may God have mercy on you? He said: I am Thābit al-Bunānī. He said: Welcome, O Thābit. You are the one whom the people of this town claim is the most constant of them in prayer. Sit, for I had been wishing to meet you before my Lord. Then Ḥabīb Abū Muḥammad stood to him and greeted him, and he returned the greeting and said: Who are you, may God have mercy on you? He said: I am Ḥabīb, Abū Muḥammad. He said: Welcome, O Abā Muḥammad. You are the one about whom these people claim that you have never asked God for anything but He gave it to you. Should you not have asked Him to conceal that for you? Sit, may God have mercy on you. He said: And he took his hand and seated him beside him. He said: Then Mālik b. Dīnār stood to him and greeted him, and he returned the greeting and said: Who are you, may God have mercy on you? He said: I am Mālik b. Dīnār. He said: Excellent, excellent, Abū Yaḥyā, if you are as they say. You are the one whom these people claim is the most ascetic of them. Sit, for now my wish before my Lord in the fleeting world is complete. Ṣāliḥ said: So I stood to greet him, and he turned to the people and said: Consider how you will be tomorrow before God in the gathering of the resurrection. He said: I greeted him and he returned the greeting and said: Who are you, may God have mercy on you? I said: Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī. He said: You are the Persian youth? You are Abū Maʿshar? I said: Yes. He said: Then recite, O Ṣāliḥ. So I began and recited, and I had hardly completed the seeking of refuge when he fell down unconscious. Then he regained consciousness and said: Resume your recitation. Ṣāliḥ said: So I resumed and recited: "And We shall turn to whatever deeds they did and make them as scattered dust." He said: He cried out, then fell on his face, and part of his body was exposed. He began to bellow as an ox bellows, then he became still. We drew near to look at him, and behold, his soul had departed as if he were a piece of wood. We went out and asked: Does he have anyone? It was said: An old woman serves him, coming to him every few days. We sent for her, and she came and said: What is wrong with him? We said: The Quran was recited to him and he died. She said: It was fitting for him. Who is the one who recited to him? Perhaps it is Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī the reciter? We said: Yes, and how do you know? Who is Ṣāliḥ? She said: I do not know him, except that I often heard him say: If Ṣāliḥ recites to me, he will kill me. We said: He is the one who recited to him. She said: He is the one who killed my beloved. So we congratulated him and buried him, may God have mercy on him]. [The Deaths] In this year died ʿUmar b. Dharr, and it was said: ʿUmar died in the year one hundred fifty-five. He was among the righteous, and he held the view of irjāʾ. In the year one hundred fifty died ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Jurayj. And Abū Janāb al-Kalbī, ʿUthmān b. al-Aswad, and Saʿīd b. Abī ʿArūbah — the name of Abū ʿArūbah is Mihrān, client of Banū Yashkur, his kunyah is Abū al-Naḍr. (Yasār with yāʾ having two dots beneath it, and with sīn unpointed).
