He said: Whenever a man came to him and he offered it to him, he would say: Its owner told me that there was weakness in its yarn. Until a man came and bought it, and said: We have acquitted you of it. Isḥāq b. Khalaf said: ʿAmr b. Qays fasted for twenty years without his family knowing. He would take his morning meal and go early to his shop, then give his morning meal as charity and fast, while his family did not know. He said: When tenderness came upon him, he would turn his face to the wall and say: This is a cold. And when he looked at the people of the market, he would say: How heedless these people are of what has been prepared for them. Ḥafṣ b. Ghiyāth said: My father related to us, saying: When ʿAmr b. Qays al-Mulāʾī was dying, he wept. His companions said: For what do you weep over this world? By God, your life was embittered all the days of your life. He said: By God, I do not weep over this world; I weep only for fear that I may be deprived of the good of the Hereafter. Al-Muḥāribī said: Sufyān said to me: ʿAmr b. Qays is the one who educated me. He taught me the recitation of the Qurʾān and taught me the shares of inheritance. I used to seek him in his market, and if I did not find him in his market, I found him in his house, either praying or reciting the Qurʾān from the codex, as if he were hastening after matters that might escape him. If I did not find him in his house, I found him in one of the mosques of Kufa, in a corner of the mosque, as if he were a thief, sitting and weeping. If I did not find him, I found him in the cemetery, sitting and lamenting over himself. When he died, the people of Kufa locked their doors and went out with his funeral procession. When they brought him out to the open burial ground and brought forth his bier—and he had enjoined that Abū Ḥayyān al-Taymī pray over him—when Abū Ḥayyān came forward and they said the takbīr, they heard a caller crying: The doer of good has come, the doer of good has come, ʿAmr b. Qays. And behold, the open land was full of white birds, the like of whose form and beauty had never been seen. The people began to marvel at their beauty and abundance. Abū Ḥayyān said: At what do you marvel? These are angels who have come and witnessed ʿAmr. Abū Khālid—he is al-Aḥmar—said: When ʿAmr b. Qays died, they saw the desert full of men in white garments. When the prayer was said over him and he was buried, they saw no one in the desert. This reached Abū Jaʿfar, and he said to Ibn Shubruma and Ibn Abī Laylā: What prevented you two from mentioning this man to me? They said: He used to ask us not to mention him to you. They differed as to where he died. It is said: in Kufa; and it is said: in Sijistān; and it is said: in Syria; and it is said: in Baghdad. The first is more fitting. 780 - Hishām b. ʿUrwa b. al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām, Abū al-Mundhir—and it is said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh—al-Asadī. He was born in the year 61. He saw Ibn ʿUmar, Jābir, Anas b. Mālik, Sahl b. Saʿd, and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr. He heard his father, Ibn al-Munkadir, al-Zuhrī, and others. Ayyūb al-Sijistānī, Mālik, Ibn Jurayj, al-Thawrī, al-Layth b. Saʿd, and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy. He came to al-Manṣūr. From Hishām b. ʿUrwa: That he entered upon Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr and said: O Commander of the Faithful, settle my debt for me. He said: And how much is your debt? He said: One hundred thousand. He said: You, with your merit and understanding, incur a debt of one hundred thousand while you have nothing with which to repay it? He said: O Commander of the Faithful, some of our young men came of age, and I wished to settle them, and I feared that something I disliked might spread among them, so I settled them, made houses for them, and held wedding feasts for them, trusting in God and in the Commander of the Faithful. He said: He gave him one hundred thousand, deeming it a great sum, then said: We have ordered for you ten thousand. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, give me what you have given while your soul is pleased, for I heard my father relate from the Messenger of God ﷺ that he said: "Whoever gives a gift while his soul is pleased with it, blessing is bestowed upon the giver and the recipient." He said: I am pleased of soul with it. Abū Manṣūr al-Qazzāz informed us with a chain of his from a shaykh of Quraysh, who said: Hishām b. ʿUrwa reached for al-Manṣūr's hand to kiss it, but he prevented him and said: O Ibn ʿUrwa, [we dislike that,] we honor you above it and honor it above anyone other than you. Hishām died in the presence of al-Manṣūr, and al-Manṣūr prayed over him. His death was in this year, and he was eighty-five years old. It is said: he died in the year 145. And it is said: 147. They differed as to his grave. Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Munādī said: Abū al-Mundhir Hishām b. ʿUrwa b. al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām died in the days of the caliphate of Abū Jaʿfar in the year 146, and was buried on the western side outside the wall, near the Qutrabbul Gate. From Ṭāhir al-Daqqāq: That he heard Abū Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Khafar deny that the well-known grave of Hishām on the western side was his, and said that it was rather in al-Khayzurāniyya on the eastern side. Aḥmad said: We consider this to be correct. [In this year] Hishām b. ʿUrwa b. al-Zubayr died, and it is said in the year 147 in Shaʿbān. And ʿAwf al-Aʿrābī. And Ṭalḥa b. Yaḥyā b. Ṭalḥa b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Taymī al-Kūfī. (And in it died Ibn al-Sāʾib al-Kalbī the genealogist).
