Then the year 145 AH began

✧ Mention of the appearance of Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan, brother of Muḥammad In this year occurred the appearance of Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, who was the brother of Muḥammad, whose mention has preceded. Before his appearance he had been sought with the utmost severity. A slave-girl of his related that no land gave them rest for five years: at one time in Fāris, at another in Kirmān, at another in al-Jabal, at another in al-Ḥijāz, at another in al-Yaman, and at another in al-Shām. Then he came to al-Mawṣil, and al-Manṣūr also came there in search of him. Ibrāhīm related: The search in al-Mawṣil forced me until I sat at the table of al-Manṣūr; then I left and the search slackened. A group of people from the army were Shīʿīs, and they wrote to Ibrāhīm asking him to come to them so they could attack al-Manṣūr. He came to the camp of Abū Jaʿfar while the latter was in Baghdād, which he had laid out. He had a mirror through which he looked and could distinguish his enemy from his friend. He looked into it and said: O Musayyab, I have seen Ibrāhīm in my camp, and there is no one on earth more hostile to me than he. See what kind of man he is. Then al-Manṣūr ordered the construction of the old bridge of al-Ṣarāh. Ibrāhīm went out to look at it with the people, and the eye of al-Manṣūr fell upon him. Ibrāhīm shrank back and disappeared among the people. He went to a beanseller and took refuge with him, who took him up to a room of his. Al-Manṣūr intensified the search for him and set watchers in every place. Ibrāhīm remained stuck where he was. His companion Sufyān b. Ḥayyān al-Qummī said to him: What you see has befallen us, and there is no escape from taking a risk. He said: You may do that. Sufyān went to al-Rabīʿ and asked him for permission to enter upon al-Manṣūr. He brought him in to him. When al-Manṣūr saw him, he reviled him. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, I deserve what you say, except that I have come to you repentant, and I have for you everything you desire. I will bring you Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh. I have tested them and found no good in them. Write for me a pass, and for a lad with me to carry me on the post-horses, and send troops with me. He wrote him a pass, handed troops over to him, and said: Here are a thousand dinars; use them for support. He said: I have no need of them. He took three hundred dinars from it and set out with the troops accompanying him. He entered the house. Ibrāhīm was wearing a woolen jubbah and a qabāʾ like the qabāʾs of servant boys. He shouted at him, and he jumped up and began giving him orders. He traveled on the post. It is said: He did not ride the post. He traveled until he reached al-Madāʾin. The keeper of the bridge there prevented him, so he handed his pass to him. When he crossed it, the man in charge of the bridge said to him: This is no servant boy; he is Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh. Go safely. He let them both go. They boarded a boat and came to al-Baṣrah. He would bring the troops to a house that had two doors and seat some of them at one door and say: Do not leave until I come to you. Then he would leave from the other door and abandon them, until he had dispersed the troops from himself and remained alone. The news reached Sufyān b. Muʿāwiyah, governor of al-Baṣrah, so he sent for them and gathered them. He sought al-Qummī but could not find him. Ibrāhīm had previously come to al-Ahwāz and hidden with al-Ḥasan b. Khubayb. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥuṣayn was searching for him. One day he said: The Commander of the Faithful has written to me informing me that the astrologers have told him that Ibrāhīm is staying at al-Ahwāz on an island between two rivers. I searched for him on the island but he was not there. I have resolved to search for him tomorrow in the city; perhaps the Commander of the Faithful means by "between two rivers" between Dujayl and al-Masruqān. Al-Ḥasan b. Khubayb returned to Ibrāhīm and informed him, and took him outside the town. Muḥammad did not search for him that day. At the end of the day, al-Ḥasan went out to Ibrāhīm and brought him into the town. They were on two donkeys at the time of the last evening prayer. The vanguard of Ibn al-Ḥuṣayn's cavalry met him. Ibrāhīm dismounted from his donkey as if to urinate. Ibn al-Ḥuṣayn asked al-Ḥasan b. Khubayb about his coming, and he said: From one of my family. He went on and left him. Al-Ḥasan returned to Ibrāhīm, mounted him, and brought him into his house. Ibrāhīm said to him: By God, I have urinated blood. He said: I went to the spot and saw that he had urinated blood. Then Ibrāhīm came to al-Baṣrah. It is said: He came there in the year 145 after the appearance of his brother Muḥammad in al-Madīnah. It is also said: He came there in the year 143. The one who brought him there and took charge of his stay, according to some, was Yaḥyā b. Ziyād b. Ḥayyān al-Nabaṭī, who lodged him in his house among the Banū Layth. It is said: He stayed in the house of Abū Farwah. He summoned the people to pledge allegiance to his brother. The first to pledge allegiance to him were Numaylah b. Murrah al-ʿAbshamī, ʿAfw Allāh b. Sufyān, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Ziyād, ʿAmr b. Salamah al-Hujaymī, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Yaḥyā b. Ḥuṣayn al-Raqāshī. They called upon the people, and al-Mughīrah b. al-Fazaʿ and his like answered them. He was also answered by ʿĪsā b. Yūnus, Muʿādh b. Muʿādh, ʿAbbād b. al-ʿAwwām, Isḥāq b. Yūsuf al-Azraq, Muʿāwiyah b. Hushaym b. Bashīr, and a great many jurists and men of learning, until his register counted four thousand. His affair became publicly known. They said to him: If you move to the center of al-Baṣrah, the people will come to you at ease. So he moved and stayed in the house of Abū Marwān, client of the Banū Sulaym, in the cemetery of the Banū Yashkur. Sufyān b. Muʿāwiyah had secretly joined his cause. When his brother Muḥammad appeared, he wrote to him ordering him to appear openly. He was distressed and grieved at that. Some of his companions made it easy for him and said to him: Your affair is ready; go out to the prison and break it open at night, and by morning a world of people will have gathered to you. His heart was relieved. Al-Manṣūr was at the outskirts of al-Kūfah, as has preceded, with few troops. He had sent three commanders to Sufyān b. Muʿāwiyah at al-Baṣrah as reinforcements for him, so that they would help him against Ibrāhīm if he appeared. When Ibrāhīm intended to appear, he sent to Sufyān and informed him, so Sufyān gathered the commanders at his place. Ibrāhīm appeared at the beginning of the month of Ramaḍān in the year 145. He seized the mounts of those soldiers, prayed the morning prayer with the people in the congregational mosque, and headed for the governor's palace, where Sufyān was fortified with a group. He besieged him. Sufyān asked him for safe-conduct, and Ibrāhīm granted him security. He entered the palace, and they spread a mat for him. The wind blew and overturned it before he sat down. The people regarded this as a bad omen. Ibrāhīm said: We do not take omens. He sat on it overturned, and he imprisoned the commanders. He also imprisoned Sufyān b. Muʿāwiyah in the palace and fettered him with a light fetter, so that al-Manṣūr would know that he was imprisoned. The appearance of Ibrāhīm reached Jaʿfar and Muḥammad, the two sons of Sulaymān b. ʿAlī. They came with six hundred men. Ibrāhīm sent al-Maḍāʾ b. al-Qāsim al-Jazarī against them with fifty men, and he routed them. Ibrāhīm's herald called out: No pursuit of the defeated and no finishing off the wounded. Ibrāhīm himself went to the gate of Zaynab bt. Sulaymān b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās—the Zaynabīs among the Abbasids are named after her—and proclaimed safe-conduct and that no one should harm them. Al-Baṣrah became clear for him. He found in its treasury two million dirhams, and was strengthened by that. He assigned stipends to his companions, fifty dirhams for each man. When al-Baṣrah was secure for him, he sent al-Mughīrah to al-Ahwāz, who reached it with two hundred men. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥuṣayn was there as al-Manṣūr's governor. He went out against him with four thousand, and they met. Ibn al-Ḥuṣayn was defeated, and al-Mughīrah entered al-Ahwāz. It is said: He sent al-Mughīrah only after his march to Bākhamrā. Ibrāhīm sent ʿAmr b. Shaddād to Fāris. He arrived there while Ismāʿīl and ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, the two sons of ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, were there. They learned of ʿAmr's approach while they were at Iṣṭakhr, so they headed to Dārābjard and fortified themselves there. Fāris came into ʿAmr's hands. Ibrāhīm sent Marwān b. Saʿīd al-ʿIjlī with seventeen thousand men to Wāsiṭ, where Hārūn b. Ḥumayd al-Iyādī was on behalf of al-Manṣūr. Al-ʿIjlī took possession of it. Al-Manṣūr sent against him ʿĀmir b. Ismāʿīl al-Muslī with five thousand men—it is said twenty thousand. There were battles between them, then they made a truce to cease fighting until they saw what would happen between Ibrāhīm and al-Manṣūr. When Ibrāhīm was killed, Marwān b. Saʿīd fled from them and went into hiding until he died. Ibrāhīm remained in al-Baṣrah distributing governors and armies until the news of his brother Muḥammad's death came to him three days before the Festival of Breaking the Fast. He went out with the people on the day of the festival, showing signs of dejection. He prayed with them and informed them of the killing of Muḥammad. They became even more resolute in fighting al-Manṣūr. The next morning he encamped, appointed Numaylah as his deputy over al-Baṣrah, and left his son Ḥasan with him.
