✧ Mention of the imprisonment of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī When Sulaymān was dismissed from al-Baṣrah, his brother ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī and those with him from among his companions went into hiding out of fear of al-Manṣūr. This reached al-Manṣūr, so he sent to Sulaymān and ʿĪsā, the two sons of ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, concerning the summoning of ʿAbd Allāh, and he gave the two of them a guarantee of safety for ʿAbd Allāh and firmly resolved that they should do it. So Sulaymān and ʿĪsā went out with ʿAbd Allāh and his commanders and his clients until they arrived before al-Manṣūr in Dhū al-Ḥijjah. When they arrived before him, he gave permission to Sulaymān and ʿĪsā, and they entered upon him and informed him of the presence of ʿAbd Allāh and asked his permission for him. He answered them regarding that and occupied the two of them with conversation, and he had prepared a place for ʿAbd Allāh in his palace, and he ordered that he be taken there after Sulaymān and ʿĪsā had entered, and that was done to him. Then al-Manṣūr rose and said to Sulaymān and ʿĪsā: “Take ʿAbd Allāh with you.” When they went out, they did not find ʿAbd Allāh, and they knew that he had been imprisoned. So they returned to al-Manṣūr and were prevented from him, and at that time the swords of those of his companions who were present were taken and they were imprisoned. Khufāf b. Manṣūr had indeed warned them of that, and he regretted having come with them, and he said: “If you obey me, we will make one single charge against Abū Jaʿfar, for by God, no barrier will stand between him and us until we come upon him! And no one will oppose us except that we kill him and save ourselves!” But they disobeyed him. When their swords were taken and they were imprisoned, Khufāf began to break wind in his own beard and spit in the faces of his companions. Then al-Manṣūr ordered the killing of some of them in his presence, and he sent the rest to Abū Dāwūd Khālid b. Ibrāhīm in Khurāsān, and he killed them there. Sulaymān b. ʿAlī was dismissed from the governorship of al-Baṣrah, and it was said: in the year forty, and Sufyān b. Muʿāwiyah was appointed over it in Ramaḍān.
