Translation
✧ Mention of the Turmoil of the Umayyads In this year, the affair of the Umayyads became disordered and turmoil erupted. Among that was the uprising of Sulaymān b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik after the killing of al-Walīd in ʿAmmān. Al-Walīd had imprisoned him there, so he came out of prison, took the wealth that was there, and proceeded to Damascus, cursing al-Walīd and reproaching him with unbelief. What has come concerning the opposition of the people of Ḥimṣ, Yazīd b. al-Walīd's fighting them, and his victory over them Mention of the opposition of the people of Ḥimṣ When al-Walīd was killed, the people of Ḥimṣ shut their gates and set up mourners and weepers for him. It was said to them that al-ʿAbbās b. al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik had aided ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz in killing him, so they demolished his house and plundered it, seized his women, and sought him. He went to his brother Yazīd. They wrote to the military districts and summoned them to demand blood for al-Walīd. They responded and agreed not to obey Yazīd. They appointed over themselves Muʿāwiya b. Yazīd b. al-Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr, and Marwān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Malik concurred with them in that. Yazīd corresponded with them, but they would not listen and wounded his messengers. He sent his brother Masrūr against them with a large force. They encamped at Ḥuwwārīn. Then Sulaymān b. Hishām came to Yazīd, and Yazīd restored to him what al-Walīd had taken from their wealth, and sent him to his brother Masrūr and those with him, commanding them to hear and obey him. The people of Ḥimṣ wanted to march to Damascus. Marwān b. ʿAbd al-Malik said to them: "I think you should march against this army and fight them. If you overcome them, those behind them will be easier for you. I do not think marching to Damascus and leaving these behind you is wise." Al-Simṭ b. Thābit said: "He only wants to oppose you, and he inclines to Yazīd and the Qadarites." So they killed him and his son, appointed Abū Muḥammad al-Sufyānī, left Sulaymān's army on the left, and marched to Damascus. Sulaymān went out in earnest and caught up with them at al-Sulaymāniyya, a farm that had belonged to Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik behind ʿAdhrāʾ. Yazīd b. al-Walīd sent ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Ḥajjāj with three thousand to Thaniyyat al-ʿUqāb, and sent Hishām b. Maṣād with one thousand five hundred to ʿAqabat al-Sulāmiyya, commanding them to reinforce one another. Sulaymān and those with him caught up with them in a state of exhaustion, and they fought a fierce battle. Sulaymān's right wing and left wing fled, but he stood firm in the center. Then his companions charged the people of Ḥimṣ until they drove them back to their position, and they charged one another repeatedly. While they were thus, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Ḥajjāj came from Thaniyyat al-ʿUqāb and charged the people of Ḥimṣ until he entered their camp and killed whoever opposed him. They fled. Yazīd b. Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī called out: "Fear God, fear God, for your people!" So the people held back. Sulaymān b. Hishām summoned them to pledge allegiance to Yazīd b. al-Walīd. Abū Muḥammad al-Sufyānī was taken captive, as was Yazīd b. Khālid b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiya. They were brought to Sulaymān, who sent them to Yazīd, and he imprisoned them. The affair of the people of Damascus was united for Yazīd b. al-Walīd, and the people of Ḥimṣ pledged allegiance to him. Yazīd gave them stipends and rewarded the nobles. Yazīd b. al-Walīd appointed Muʿāwiya b. Yazīd b. al-Ḥuṣayn over them. What has come concerning the opposition of the people of Palestine to Yazīd b. al-Walīd, then their dispersal and their pledge to him Mention of the opposition of the people of Palestine In this year, the people of Palestine rose against their governor Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik and expelled him. Al-Walīd had appointed him over them. They brought Yazīd b. Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik and placed him in authority over them, saying to him: "The Commander of the Faithful has been killed, so take charge of our affair." He took charge of them and summoned the people to fight Yazīd, and they responded. The descendants of Sulaymān used to dwell in Palestine. The affair of the people of Palestine reached the people of Jordan, so they appointed Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik over themselves and joined with them to fight Yazīd b. al-Walīd. The command of the people of Palestine was in the hands of Saʿīd b. Rawḥ and Ḍibʿān b. Rawḥ. Their news reached Yazīd b. al-Walīd, so he sent Sulaymān b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik against them with the people of Damascus and the people of Ḥimṣ who had been with al-Sufyānī, their number being eighty-four thousand. Yazīd b. al-Walīd sent to Saʿīd and Ḍibʿān, the two sons of Rawḥ, promising them and offering them governorship and wealth. So they departed with the people of Palestine, and the people of Jordan remained. Sulaymān sent five thousand, and they plundered the villages and marched to Tiberias. The people of Tiberias said: "We will not stay while the troops raid our homes and exercise authority over our families." So they plundered Yazīd b. Sulaymān and Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik, took their mounts and weapons, and returned to their homes. When the people of Palestine and Jordan dispersed, Sulaymān marched until he came to al-Ṣinnabra. The people of Jordan came to him and pledged allegiance to Yazīd b. al-Walīd. He marched to Tiberias and led them in Friday prayer, and those there pledged allegiance. He marched to al-Ramla and took the pledge from those there. He appointed Ḍibʿān b. Rawḥ over Palestine and Ibrāhīm b. al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik over Jordan.
