Translation

✧ And in the year one hundred and twenty-three, Naṣr b. Sayyār raided Farghānah his second raid, and he sent a delegation to Iraq led by Maʿn b. Aḥmar al-Numayrī, then to Hishām. He passed by Yūsuf b. ʿUmar, who said to him: “O son of Aḥmar, does the one-handed man defeat you over your authority, O assembly of Qays!” He said: “That has happened.” So he ordered him to criticize him before Hishām. He said: “How can I criticize him despite his trials and his fine traces with me and with my people?” But he kept at him. He said: “So for what should I criticize him? Should I criticize his experience, or his obedience, or the good fortune of his judgment, or his governance?” He said: “Criticize him for old age.” When he entered upon Hishām, he mentioned the army of Khurāsān, their bravery, and their obedience, and said: “Except that they have no commander.” He said: “Woe to you! What happened to al-Kinānī?”—meaning Naṣr. He said: “He has strength and judgment, except that he does not recognize the man nor hear his voice until one draws near to him, and he is hardly understood because of weakness due to his old age.” Then Shubayl b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Māzinī said: “A lie, by God! He is not an old man whose senility is feared, nor a young man whose foolishness is feared; rather, he is the experienced one, and he has governed most of the frontiers of Khurāsān and its wars before his appointment.” Hishām realized that Maʿn’s statement was instigated by Yūsuf, so he paid no attention to his words. Maʿn returned to Yūsuf, and he asked him to have his son removed from Khurāsān, so he did. He sent and brought his family. Naṣr, when he had arrived in Khurāsān, had favored Maʿn, raised his rank, and granted his intercessions for his needs. When he did this, he alienated the Qaysīs, so they came to him and apologized to him.
