Translation
✧ Those of the notables who died in the year one hundred and twenty Salm b. Qays al-ʿAlawī Salm b. Qays al-ʿAlawī: He narrated from Anas. Jarīr b. Ḥāzim narrated from him. Yaḥyā and Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd deemed him trustworthy. Yaḥyā said in one narration: He is weak. Ḥammād said: I mentioned him to Shuʿbah, and he said: The one who sees the crescent two days before the people. Al-Ḥasan said to him: Leave the people and their crescent alone until they see it. Ibn Qutaybah said: It is said that the edges of his eyelids turned white, and when he could see, he saw the edges of his eyelids and thought they were the crescent. He is not one of the descendants of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib; rather, he is from the descendants of ʿAlī b. [Yūnān. It was said: They were in al-Baṣrah. There is another one called Khālid b. Yazīd al-ʿAlawī from the descendants of ʿAlī b.] al-Aswad, who narrated from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī. There is another one called Jundub b. Sarḥān al-ʿAlawī from the Banū Mudlij. He reported from Balīgh; Ibn Lahīʿah narrated from him. Mudlij is from the Banū ʿAbd Manāh b. Kinānah. His descendants were called Banū ʿAlī only because their mother al-Dafrāʾ—whose name was Fakīhah—was married after their father by ʿAlī b. Masʿūd al-Ghassānī, so they were ascribed to him. It is they whom Umayyah b. Abī al-Ṣalt meant by his saying: May God reward the Banū ʿAlī—among them is a widow and one who marries Whoever we have mentioned besides those who are called al-ʿAlawī is ascribed to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ. ʿAbd Allāh b. Kathīr, Abū Maʿbad the Qurʾān reciter ʿAbd Allāh b. Kathīr, Abū Maʿbad the Qurʾān reciter, client of ʿUmar b. ʿAlqamah al-Kinānī, and it is said: al-Dārī: Al-Dār is a sub-tribe of Lakhm. He was one of the sons of Persia who were in Ṣanʿāʾ; Kisrā sent them to Yemen when he drove out the Abyssinians from it. He was one of the Seven Reciters. He took from Mujāhid, and Abū ʿAmr b. al-ʿAlāʾ recited to him. He was a man of religion and piety. He was a perfume seller. He died in Makkah in this year. ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah b. al-Nuʿmān ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah b. al-Nuʿmān, Abū ʿUmar al-Ẓafarī al-Anṣārī: He had knowledge of biographical narratives and military expeditions. He narrated from Ibn Isḥāq and others. He was trustworthy. He went as a delegate to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz during his caliphate regarding a debt that was incumbent upon him, and he paid it on his behalf. He ordered a stipend for him and commanded him to sit in the mosque of Damascus and relate to the people the military expeditions of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the virtues of his companions ؓ. He said: The Umayyads used to dislike this and forbid it, so sit and narrate. He did so. Then he returned to Madinah and died there in this year. Qays b. Muslim al-Jadalī Qays b. Muslim al-Jadalī: He narrated from Ṭāriq b. Shihāb, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā, and Ibn Jubayr. He was one of the devoted weepers, [and he died in this year]. From Sufyān, he said: Qays b. Muslim used to pray until the pre-dawn, then he would sit and pour out weeping hour after hour and say: For some purpose we were created; if we do not bring good to the Hereafter, we will surely perish. Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ b. Jābir Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ b. Jābir, Abū ʿAbd Allāh: He traced hadiths back to Anas and others. He was a learned, good, humble man. Al-Ḥasan used to call him the master of the reciters. He used to fast perpetually and concealed that. He used to weep throughout the night until a slave girl of his said: If this man had killed all the people of the world, he would not do more than this. He used to go out and raid. He went out once against the Turks with Qutaybah b. Muslim. It was said to Qutaybah: Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ is raising his finger—meaning supplicating. He said: That finger is dearer to me than three thousand reins. From ʿAlī b. Bazīʿ al-Hilālī, he said: Maṭar al-Warrāq said: I never desired to weep until I was satisfied except that I looked at the face of Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ. When I looked at his face, it was as if he had lost ten sons from grief. Muḥammad b. Hibat Allāh al-Ṭabarī informed us with a chain of transmission from Ibn Shawdhab, who said: When it was said in al-Baṣrah: Who is the most virtuous of the people of al-Baṣrah? They said: Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ. He was not seen to do much worship. He used to wear a Baṣran shirt and a woolen cloak. He had an upper room; when night came, he entered it and locked it upon himself. From Yūnus, he said: I heard Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ say: If sins had a smell, you would not be able to come near me because of the stench of my smell. ʿAbd Allāh said: with his chain of transmission, al-Ḥārith b. Nabhān narrated to us, saying: I heard Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ say: O my companions! [My companions have gone]. I said: May God have mercy on you. Have not young men arisen who fast by day, stand by night, and strive in the way of God? He said: Yes, but impurities and dregs—self-admiration has corrupted them. ʿAbd Allāh said: with his chain of transmission from Ibn Shawdhab, who said: The governor of al-Baṣrah distributed to the people of al-Baṣrah. He sent to Mālik b. Dīnār, and he accepted. Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ said to him: O Mālik, you accepted the gifts of the ruler. He said: Ask my companions. They said: He bought slaves with them and freed them. Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ said to him: I adjure you by God, is your heart now toward him as it was before he gave you? He said: O God, no. He said: Do you see what has entered upon you? Mālik said to his companions: [Mālik is only a donkey]. None worships God like Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ. ʿAbd Allāh said: and from Ḥammād b. Zayd, who said: We entered upon Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ to visit him in his illness. Yaḥyā al-Bakkāʾ came asking permission. They said: Yaḥyā al-Bakkāʾ. He said: The worst of your days is the day you are ascribed to weeping. In another narration, he said: A man would weep for twenty years and his wife would not know. He said to a man: Has the prior knowledge of God about you ever made you weep? From Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Zarrād, who said: Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ saw a son of his swaggering with his hand, and he said: Woe to you! Come here. Do you know who you are? Your mother—I bought her for two hundred dirhams. And your father—may God not multiply the like of him among the Muslims. Ibn ʿUbayd Allāh said: with his chain of transmission from Ḥazm, who said: Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ said while dying: O my brothers, do you know where I am being taken? By God, besides whom there is no god, I am being taken to the Fire, or He pardons me. Abū Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm al-Anṣārī Abū Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm al-Anṣārī: His name is his kunyah. He was virtuous. He was in charge of judiciary and the pilgrimage. When ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz took office, he appointed him governor of Madinah. Ismāʿīl b. Aḥmad al-Samarqandī informed us with his chain of transmission from ʿAṭṭāf b. Khālid, from his mother, from the wife of Abū Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm, that she said: Abū Bakr has not lain down on his bed at night for forty years. He died in Madinah at the age of eighty-four. In this year also died Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥārith al-Tamīmī, Ḥammād b. Sulaymān the jurist, Wāqid b. ʿAmr b. Saʿd b. Muʿādh, ʿAlī b. Mudrik al-Nakhaʿī al-Kūfī, and al-Qāsim b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd al-Kūfī.
