Translation
✧ Those of the notable figures who died in this year: Iyās b. Salamah b. al-Akwaʿ, Abū Bakr al-Aslamī: He transmitted from his father. He died in Madinah. Thābit b. Aslam, Abū Muḥammad al-Bunānī al-Baṣrī: He was attributed to Bunānah bt. al-Qayn b. Ḥabashī, whose foster child he was. She fostered the children of Saʿd b. Luʾayy, and his descendants were attributed to her. Thābit narrated with a chain from Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn al-Zubayr, Anas, and others. He was devout, praying and fasting much. Ibn Nāṣir reported to us, saying: On the authority of Bakr b. ʿAbd [Allāh], who said: Whoever would be pleased to look at the most devout man we encountered in his time, let him look at Thābit al-Bunānī. We never encountered anyone more devout than him. You would see him one day engaged in matters of worship, far between the two ends, shading himself while fasting, and giving rest to what was between his forehead and his foot. Aḥmad said with his chain: Jaʿfar narrated to us, saying: I heard Thābit say: I did not leave any pillar in the congregational mosque but that I completed the Qurʾān at it and wept at it. Ḥayy b. Yuʾmin b. Ḥujayl, Abū ʿUshshānah al-Maʿāfirī: Abū Qubayl, al-Layth, and Ibn Lahīʿah transmitted from him. He was among the devoted worshippers. [He died in this year]. Al-Ḥajjāj b. Furāfiṣah: He transmitted from Anas, and he was among the devoted worshippers engaged in worship. On the authority of Sufyān, who said: I spent twelve nights at al-Ḥajjāj b. Furāfiṣah's, and I did not see him eat, drink, or sleep. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Yaḥṣubī: The imam of the people of Syria in Qurʾanic recitation. He recited to al-Mughīrah b. Abī Shihāb al-Makhzūmī, and al-Mughīrah recited to ʿUthmān. Ibn ʿĀmir transmitted from Wāthilah and al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr. He was appointed judge, and he died in this year. ʿUbādah b. Nusayy: The judge of Jordan and the chief of its people. He saw ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir al-Juhanī and Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṣunābiḥī. [He died in this year]. On the authority of Ḍamrah, from Rajāʾ, who said: There was a dispute between a man and ʿUbādah b. Nusayy. The man hastened to him and met Rajāʾ b. Ḥaywah, and said: I have heard that so-and-so did something to you, so tell me. He said: Were it not that it would be backbiting from me, I would have informed you of what he did. ʿUrwah b. Udhaynah, Abū ʿUmar: Of the Banū Layth. He was noble and learned [and reliable], and ḥadīth was transmitted from him. He came as a delegate to Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, who said to him: Are you not the one who said: I have known, and extravagance is not of my character, that what is my sustenance will surely come to me. I strive for it and its pursuit wearies me; And were I to sit, it would come to me without wearying me. He said: Yes. He said: Then what brought you to us? He said: I will consider that, and he left and departed immediately. News of that reached Hishām, so he sent his gift after him. A woman stopped before him and said: You are the one of whom it is said that you are a righteous man, yet you say: When I find the blaze of love in my liver, I head toward the people's water-skin to cool myself. This brings cool water only to its surface; so who is for a fire on the entrails that burns? By God, no righteous man ever said this. Ibn Nāṣir al-Ḥāfiẓ reported to us with a chain of his from ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. Saʿīd, who said: Sukaynah passed one night at al-ʿAqīq with her slave girls, and there was ʿUrwah b. Udhaynah. She said to her slave girls: Who is sitting in the palace of Ibn ʿAnbasah? They said to her: ʿUrwah b. Udhaynah. She inclined toward him and said: You, Abū ʿĀmir, claim that you are innocent, while you are the one who says: She said, when I had disclosed my passion to her and revealed it: You were, woe to me, behind the curtain, so conceal yourself. Do you not see those around me? I said to her: Cover your passion and what I cast upon my sight. These are free women if this came from a sound heart. If you wish to free them, say so. Abū Bakr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Maryam al-Ghassānī: He was very devout, constantly weeping. The tears had made two channels in his cheeks. On the authority of ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. Saʿīd, who said: I heard Abū Ayyūb say: I heard Yazīd b. ʿAbd Rabbihi say: I visited Abū Bakr b. Abī Maryam while he was in the throes of death. I said to him: May God have mercy on you, if only you would swallow a gulp of water. He gestured with his hand, no. Then night came, and he said: Then yes. I said: Yes. So we dripped a drop of water into his mouth, and then he died. In this year died ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿAbbās, and he died in al-Ṭāʾif. Also Abū Ṣakharah Jāmiʿ b. Shaddād, Abū ʿUshshānah al-Maʿāfirī, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Sābiṭ.
