وَأَمَّا الْأَسْرَى فَكَانُوا ثَلَاثَةَ عَشَرَ رَجُلًا، فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ بِهِمْ عَلَى يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ وَعِنْدَهُ كُثَيِّرُ عَزَّةَ، فَأَنْشَدَ: حَلِيمٌ إِذَا مَا نَالَ عَاقَبَ مُجْمِلًا ✧ The Killing of Yazīd b. al-Muhallab Then Yazīd b. al-Muhallab departed from Wāsiṭ, leaving his son Muʿāwiyah as his deputy there, and he placed under his charge the treasury and the prisoners. He marched along the mouth of the Nile until he encamped at al-ʿAqr. He sent ahead his brother ʿAbd al-Malik b. al-Muhallab toward al-Kūfah. Al-ʿAbbās b. al-Walīd met him at Busūrā, and they fought. The companions of ʿAbd al-Malik charged them with an assault in which they routed them. With them were people from Tamīm and Qays from the people of al-Baṣrah, and they called out: 'O people of Syria! Fear God, fear God, lest you abandon us!' The companions of ʿAbd al-Malik had driven them to the river. The people of Syria said: 'No harm will come to you. We have a turn at the beginning of the fighting.' Then they attacked them, and the companions of ʿAbd al-Malik were routed and fled back to Yazīd. Maslamah advanced, marching along the bank of the Euphrates to al-Anbār. He laid a bridge over it, crossed, and marched until he encamped against Ibn al-Muhallab. Many people from al-Kūfah and from the frontier garrisons came to Ibn al-Muhallab. He appointed over those who came out to him from the people of al-Kūfah and the quarter of the people of al-Madīnah ʿAbd Allāh b. Sufyān b. Yazīd b. al-Mughaffal al-Azdī; over the quarter of Madhḥij and Asad, al-Nuʿmān b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ashtar; over Kindah and Rabīʿah, Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. al-Ashʿath; and over Tamīm and Hamdān, Ḥanẓalah b. ʿAttāb b. Warqāʾ al-Tamīmī. He gathered them all [with] al-Mufaḍḍal b. al-Muhallab. The dīwān of Ibn al-Muhallab numbered one hundred and twenty thousand men. He said: 'I wish I had in exchange for them those of my people who are in Khurāsān.' Then he rose among his companions and incited them to fight. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān had encamped at al-Nukhaylah, cut off the water channels, and set watchers over the people of al-Kūfah to prevent them from going out to Ibn al-Muhallab. He sent a detachment to Maslamah with Sabrah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mikhnaf. Maslamah sent and dismissed ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd from al-Kūfah and appointed over it Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. al-Walīd b. ʿUqbah, who was Dhū al-Shāmah. Yazīd gathered the leaders of his companions and said: 'I have decided to assemble twelve thousand men and send them with my brother Muḥammad b. al-Muhallab to attack Maslamah by night. They will carry with them pack saddles, saddle frames, and dung baskets to fill up their trench. He will fight them at their trench for the rest of his night, and I will reinforce him with men until morning. When morning comes, I will advance against them with the people and engage them. I hope that God will then grant us victory over them.' Al-Sumaydaʿ said: 'We have called them to the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Prophet, ﷺ, and they have claimed that they accepted this from us. It is not for us to be deceitful or treacherous until they return to us [what they claimed they would accept from us].' Abū Ruʾbah, who was the head of the Murjiʾite faction, and with him some companions, said: 'He is right; thus it should be.' Yazīd said: 'Woe to you! Do you believe the Banū Umayyah that they act according to the Book and the Sunnah, when they have neglected that ever since they came to power? They are deceiving you in order to plot against you. Do not let them get ahead of you. I have met the Banū Marwān, and I have never met among them anyone more cunning or more treacherously perfidious than this yellow locust,' meaning Maslamah. They said: 'We will not do that until they return to us what they claimed they would accept from us.' Marwān b. al-Muhallab was in al-Baṣrah urging the people to war against the Syrians, while al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī was discouraging them. When that reached Marwān, he rose among the people commanding them to strive and mobilize. Then he said: 'It has reached me that this misguided, hypocritical old man'—and he did not name him—'discourages the people. By God, if a neighbor were to pull a reed from his hut, his nose would keep bleeding! By God, he will surely desist from mentioning us and from gathering to himself the riffraff of al-Ubullah and the uncouth of the Euphrates of al-Baṣrah, or I will set upon him a rough file.' When that reached al-Ḥasan, he said: 'By God, [I do not dislike] that God should honor me by his humiliation.' Some of his companions said: 'If he intended you, and you wished, we would defend you.' He said to them: 'Then I would have contradicted you in what I forbade you: I command you not to kill one another on behalf of someone other than me, and I command you to kill one another on my behalf!' That reached Marwān, who became harsh toward them, sought them, and they dispersed. He left al-Ḥasan alone. The encounter between Yazīd b. al-Muhallab and Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān lasted eight days. Maslamah sent to al-Waḍḍāḥ to go out with the ships and burn the bridge. On Friday, fourteen days having passed from Ṣafar, Maslamah sent to al-Waḍḍāḥ to go out with the ships and burn the bridge. He did so. Maslamah went out, drew up the Syrian troops, then approached Ibn al-Muhallab. He placed on his right wing Jabalah b. Makhramah al-Kindī, and on his left wing al-Hudhayl b. Zufar b. al-Ḥārith al-Kilābī. Al-ʿAbbās b. al-Walīd placed on his right wing Sayf b. Hāniʾ al-Hamdānī, and on his left wing Suwayd b. al-Qaʿqāʿ al-Tamīmī. Maslamah was in command of the people. Yazīd b. al-Muhallab came out, having placed on his right wing Ḥabīb b. al-Muhallab, and on his left wing al-Mufaḍḍal b. al-Muhallab. A man from Syria came out and challenged to single combat. Muḥammad b. al-Muhallab went out against him and struck him. The man parried with his hand, upon which was an iron gauntlet. Muḥammad struck him and cut the iron gauntlet, and the sword sped into his palm, and he clung to his horse and fled. When al-Waḍḍāḥ approached the bridge, he set it on fire, and its smoke rose. The people had already advanced and battle was engaged, though the fighting was not intense. When the people saw the smoke and were told that the bridge had been burned, they fled. It was said to Yazīd: 'The people have fled.' He said: 'From what have they fled? Was there fighting from which one could flee?' It was said to him: 'They said the bridge has been burned, and no one stood firm.' He said: 'May God deface them! They are bedbugs that were smoked out and flew away!' Then he went out with his companions and said: 'Strike the faces of the fugitives.' They did so until they became too many for him, and he was met by masses like mountains. He said: 'Leave them. By God, I hope that no place will ever gather me with them again. Leave them, may God have mercy on them. They are sheep among which a wolf has run amok!'. Yazīd did not consider flight. Yazīd b. al-Ḥakam b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ al-Thaqafī, who was the nephew of ʿUthmān b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ, the Companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ—there is no kinship between him and al-Ḥakam b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ, the father of Marwān—came to him while he was at Wāsiṭ and said to him: 'The Banū Marwān's dominion has perished. If you have not perceived that, then perceive it.' He said: 'I have not perceived it.' Ibn al-Ḥakam said: 'Live as a king or die nobly, for if you die With your sword drawn in your hand, you will be excused.' He said: 'As for this, perhaps.' When Yazīd saw the flight of his companions, he said: 'O Sumaydaʿ, is my judgment better or yours? Did I not inform you of what the people intended?' He said: 'Yes.' Then Sumaydaʿ dismounted and Yazīd dismounted among their companions. It is said that he was on a gray horse. Someone came to him and said: 'Your brother Ḥabīb has been killed.' He said: 'There is no good in life after him. By God, I hated life after defeat, and now my hatred has increased. Go forward.' They knew that he had chosen death, and those who disliked fighting slipped away from him. A goodly company remained with him as he advanced. Whenever he passed by cavalry he routed them, or a group of Syrians turned aside from him. He headed toward Maslamah, wanting no one else. When he drew near him, Maslamah brought his horse close to mount, but the Syrian cavalry wheeled upon him and his companions. Yazīd, al-Sumaydaʿ, and Muḥammad b. al-Muhallab were killed. There was a man from Kalb called al-Qaḥl b. ʿAyyāsh. When he saw Yazīd, he said: 'By God, this is Yazīd! By God, I will kill him or he will kill me! Who will charge with me and hold off his companions until I reach him?' Some men charged with him, and they fought for a while. The two parties separated, leaving Yazīd slain and al-Qaḥl at his last breath. He gestured to his companions to show them the place of Yazīd, that he was his killer, and that Yazīd had killed him. A mawlā of the Banū Murrah brought the head of Yazīd. It was said to him: 'Did you kill him?' He said: 'No.' When he came to Maslamah, he sent it to Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik with Khālid b. al-Walīd b. ʿUqbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ. It is said: Rather, al-Hudhayl b. Zufar b. al-Ḥārith al-Kilābī killed him, and he did not dismount to take his head out of disdain. When Yazīd was killed, al-Mufaḍḍal b. al-Muhallab was fighting the Syrians, not knowing of the killing of Yazīd or the flight of the people. Whenever he charged the people, they were routed, then he charged until he mixed with them. With him was ʿĀmir b. al-ʿUmaythil al-Azdī, striking with his sword and saying: 'The mother of the newborn boy knows That with the sword's edge I am no coward.' They fought for a while, and Rabīʿah fled. Al-Mufaḍḍal met them, calling: 'O company of Rabīʿah, return, return! By God, you were never a disgrace or base, nor is this a habit of yours. Let not the people of Iraq be blamed because of you. May my soul ransom you!' They turned back to him, intending to charge. Then someone came to him and said: 'What are you doing here? Yazīd, Ḥabīb, and Muḥammad have been killed, and the people fled long ago.' The people dispersed from him, and al-Mufaḍḍal went to Wāsiṭ. There was none among the Arabs more striking with his sword, nor better at drawing up troops for war, nor more daring against the enemy than he. It is said: Rather, his brother ʿAbd al-Malik came to him, and he disliked to tell him of the killing of Yazīd lest he seek death. He said to him: 'The amir has gone down to Wāsiṭ.' Al-Mufaḍḍal went down with those who remained of the sons of al-Muhallab to Wāsiṭ. When he learned of the killing of Yazīd, he swore that he would never speak to ʿAbd al-Malik again, and he did not speak to him until he was killed at Qandābīl. His eye had been injured in the war, and he said: 'ʿAbd al-Malik has disgraced me. What excuse do I have when people see me and say: A one-eyed, defeated old man! Would that he had told me the truth and I had been killed!' Then he said: 'There is no good in thrusting spears at the brave, Nor in meeting war after Yazīd.' When al-Mufaḍḍal left the battlefield, the Syrian army came to the camp of Yazīd. Abū Ruʾbah, the leader of the Murjiʾites, fought them for a while in the daytime. Maslamah took about three hundred prisoners and sent them to al-Kūfah, where they were imprisoned. A letter came from Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik to Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. al-Walīd, commanding him to strike off the prisoners' necks. He ordered al-ʿUryān b. al-Haytham, who was over his police, to bring them out in groups of twenty and thirty. About thirty men from Tamīm stood up and said: 'We were the ones who fled with the people, so begin with us before the others.' Al-ʿUryān brought them out and struck their necks while they were saying: 'We fled with the people, and this is our reward.' When he finished with them, a messenger came with a letter from Maslamah commanding him to stop killing the prisoners. Maslamah then came and encamped at al-Ḥīrah. Muʿāwiyah b. Yazīd kills the prisoners. When the news of Yazīd's defeat reached Wāsiṭ, his son Muʿāwiyah brought out thirty-two prisoners who were with him and struck their necks. Among them were ʿAdī b. Arṭāh, Muḥammad b. ʿAdī b. Arṭāh, Mālik and ʿAbd al-Malik the two sons of Mismaʿ, and others. Then he departed until he came to al-Baṣrah with the wealth and treasures. Al-Mufaḍḍal b. al-Muhallab came, and the family of al-Muhallab gathered at al-Baṣrah, prepared ships, and equipped themselves to embark on the sea. Yazīd b. al-Muhallab had sent Waddāʿ b. Ḥumayd al-Azdī as governor over Qandābīl and said to him: 'I am marching against this enemy. When I meet them, I will not leave the field until it is either for me or for them. If I prevail, I will honor you. If it is the other way, you will remain at Qandābīl until my family comes to you, and they will fortify themselves there until they obtain a guarantee of safety for themselves. I have chosen you for them from among my people, so be as good as my expectation.' He took oaths from him that he would give sincere counsel to his family if they sought refuge with him. When the family of al-Muhallab gathered at al-Baṣrah, they loaded their families and wealth onto seagoing ships and put out to sea. When they were abreast of Kirmān, they disembarked and loaded their families and wealth onto beasts. Their leader was al-Mufaḍḍal b. al-Muhallab. There were many fugitives in Kirmān, and they joined al-Mufaḍḍal. Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik sent Mudrik b. Ḍabb al-Kalbī in pursuit of them and the remnants of the defeated. Mudrik overtook al-Mufaḍḍal and the fugitives at a mountain pass. They turned on him and fought, and the fighting was intense. Among the companions of al-Mufaḍḍal were killed al-Nuʿmān b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ashtar al-Nakhaʿī and Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath. Ibn Ṣūl, the king of Quhistān, was taken prisoner. ʿUthmān b. Isḥāq b. Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath was wounded and fled until he reached Ḥulwān, where he was pointed out and killed, and his head was carried to Maslamah at al-Ḥīrah. Some of the companions of Ibn al-Muhallab turned back and sought amnesty, and they were granted it. Among them were Mālik b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ashtar and al-Ward b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥabīb al-Saʿdī al-Tamīmī. The family of al-Muhallab and those with them went on to Qandābīl. Maslamah sent to Mudrik b. Ḍabb and recalled him, and sent in their pursuit Hilāl b. Aḥwaz al-Tamīmī. He caught up with them at Qandābīl. The family of al-Muhallab wanted to enter it, but Waddāʿ b. Ḥumayd prevented them. Hilāl b. Aḥwaz had not broken with the family of al-Muhallab. When they met, Waddāʿ was on the right wing and ʿAbd al-Malik b. Hilāl on the left wing, both of them Azdī. Hilāl b. Aḥwaz raised a banner of amnesty. Waddāʿ b. Ḥumayd and ʿAbd al-Malik b. Hilāl went over to him, and the people dispersed from the family of al-Muhallab. When Marwān b. al-Muhallab saw that, he wanted to go to the women and kill them, lest they fall into the hands of those people. Al-Mufaḍḍal forbade him, saying: 'We do not fear for them from these people.' He left them, and they advanced with their swords and fought until they were all killed, to the last man. They were: al-Mufaḍḍal, ʿAbd al-Malik, Ziyād, and Marwān, the sons of al-Muhallab; Muʿāwiyah b. Yazīd b. al-Muhallab; al-Minhāl b. Abī ʿUyaynah b. al-Muhallab; and ʿAmr and al-Mughīrah, the two sons of Qabīṣah b. al-Muhallab. Their heads were carried, and in the ear of each one was a tag with his name, except for Abū ʿUyaynah b. al-Muhallab, ʿUmar b. Yazīd b. al-Muhallab, and ʿUthmān b. al-Mufaḍḍal b. al-Muhallab, for they had joined Rutbīl. Hilāl b. Aḥwaz sent their women, their heads, and the captives from the family of al-Muhallab to Maslamah at al-Ḥīrah. Maslamah sent them to Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and Yazīd sent them on to al-ʿAbbās b. al-Walīd, who was governor of Aleppo. He set up the heads. Maslamah wanted to sell the offspring, but al-Jarrāḥ b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥakamī bought them from him for one hundred thousand and set them free, and Maslamah took nothing from al-Jarrāḥ. When the news of the killing of Yazīd reached Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, it pleased him on account of his victory and because of what he harbored against him from before the caliphate. The reason for the enmity between them was that Ibn al-Muhallab came out of the bathhouse during the days of Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik, having perfumed himself heavily with ghāliyah. He passed by Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, who was beside ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and said: "May God make the world ugly! I wish that a mithqāl of ghāliyah were worth a thousand dinars, so that none but every nobleman could attain it." Ibn al-Muhallab heard this and said to him: "Rather, I wish that ghāliyah were on the forehead of a lion, so that none but one like me could attain it." Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik said to him: "By God, if I am ever given authority, I will surely kill you." Ibn al-Muhallab said to him: "By God, if you are given this affair while I am alive, I will surely strike your face with fifty thousand swords." This was the cause of the hatred between them. It is said otherwise, and that has been mentioned previously. As for the captives, they were thirteen men. When they were brought before Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and Kuthayyir ʿAzzah was with him, he recited: Forbearing when he attains, he punishes with grace the severest punishment, or pardons without reproach. So pardon, O Commander of the Faithful, for God's reward; whatever good you do is recorded for you. They did wrong; if you forgive, you are able, and the best forbearance for God's reward is the forbearance of one angered. Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik said: "Far from it, O Abū Ṣakhr! Kinship has swayed you. There is no way to that. God, Mighty and Majestic, has delivered them to me for their wicked deeds." Then he ordered them, and they were killed. A young boy remained, and he said: "Kill me, for I am not young." He said: "See if he has reached puberty." The boy said: "I know myself better; I have had a wet dream and I have had intercourse with women." So Yazīd ordered him, and he was killed. The names of the captives who were killed were: al-Muʿārik, ʿAbd Allāh, al-Mughīrah, al-Mufaḍḍal, and Minjāb, sons of Yazīd b. al-Muhallab; Durayd, al-Ḥajjāj, Ghassān, Shabīb, and al-Faḍl, sons of al-Mufaḍḍal b. al-Muhallab; and al-Mufaḍḍal b. Qabīṣah b. al-Muhallab. Elegy for Yazīd b. al-Muhallab. Thābit Quṭnah said, elegizing Yazīd b. al-Muhallab: The length of this night refuses to come to an end, and grief has stirred the heart of the one enslaved by love. I lay awake, while Umm Khālid did not lie awake with me, and my eyes have been sleepless for a full year, For a perished one whose loss shattered the tribe; the fates called him, and he answered and submitted. For a king at al-ʿAqr, O friend, whose battalions were made cowardly, and he went down to death marked by it. He was struck down and I was not present; had I been a witness, I would have donned mourning if the tribe did not gather for lamentation. And in the vicissitudes of days, O Hind, know that for one seeking vengeance there is a look, if he delays. Perhaps, if the wind inclines me with an inclination against Ibn Abī Dhibbān, he will regret. O Maslamah, if our spears are able to reach you, we will make you taste with them the vomit of black snakes, submitted. And if we meet with al-ʿAbbās in the course of time a stumble, we will repay him with the day that he had brought about before, In retribution, and we will not go beyond what he had committed against us, even if Ibn Marwān was most unjust. You will know, if the sandal slips with you a slip, and people display modesty, stammering, Who is the wrongdoer, the criminal against his own household, when the causes of a matter are brought and made obscure. Indeed we bend with forbearance after we see ignorance from the excess of the vile one, out of magnanimity. Indeed we alight at the frontier, and we see no dweller there except the mighty army. We hold that neighbors have a right and a covenant, when people do not observe for the neighbor what is sacred. Indeed we entertain the guest from the tops of the hills, when the support of supporters is a burden. He has many elegies for him. As for Abū ʿUyaynah b. al-Muhallab, Hind bt. al-Muhallab sent to Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik concerning his safe-conduct, and he granted him amnesty. ʿUmar and ʿUthmān remained until Asad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī became governor of Khurasan, and he wrote to them granting them safe-conduct, and they came to Khurasan.
