The Year 99
وَفِي سنة تسع وتسعين أَغَارَتِ التُّرْكُ عَلَى أَذْرَبِيجَانَ فَقَتَلُوا خَلْقًا كَثِيرًا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَوَجَّهَ إِلَيْهِمْ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ حَاتِمَ بْنَ النُّعْمَانِ الْبَاهِلِيَّ، فَقَتَلَ أُولَئِكَ الْأَتْرَاكَ، وَلَمْ يُفْلِتْ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا الْيَسِيرُ، وَبَعَثَ مِنْهُمْ أُسَارَى إِلَى عُمَرَ وَهُوَ بِخُنَاصِرَةَ. وَقَدْ كَانَ الْمُؤَذِّنُونَ يُذَكِّرُونَهُ بَعْدَ أَذَانِهِمْ بِاقْتِرَابِ الْوَقْتِ وَضِيقِهِ لِئَلَّا يُؤَخِّرَهَا كَمَا كَانَ يُؤَخِّرُهَا مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَهُ لِكَثْرَةِ الْأَشْغَالِ، وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ عَنْ أَمْرِهِ لَهُمْ بِذَلِكَ. فَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ. فَرَوَى ابْنُ عَسَاكِرَ فِي تَرْجَمَةِ حَرِيزِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ الرَّحْبِيِّ الْحِمْصِيِّ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ مُؤَذِّنِي عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ يُسَلِّمُونَ عَلَيْهِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ: السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ، الصَّلَاةُ قَدْ قَارَبَتْ.
Translation
✧ In the year ninety-nine the Turks raided Adharbayjān and killed a great number of Muslims. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz dispatched against them Ḥātim b. al-Nuʿmān al-Bāhilī, who killed those Turks, and none of them escaped except a few. He sent captives from among them to ʿUmar while he was in Khunāṣirah. The muezzins used to remind him after their call to prayer of the imminence and shortness of the time, so that he would not delay it as those before him used to delay it because of the abundance of engagements. That was by his command to them to do so, but God knows best. Ibn ʿAsākir related in the biography of Ḥarīz b. ʿUthmān al-Raḥbī al-Ḥimṣī: I saw the muezzins of ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz greeting him during the prayer: “Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Faithful, and the mercy of God and His blessings. Come to prayer, come to success. The prayer time has drawn near.”
