Translation

✧ Ibn Jarīr said: In the year ninety-eight, Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik took the oath of allegiance for his son Ayyūb, that he would be the caliph after him. That was after the death of his brother Marwān b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. He turned away from appointing his brother Yazīd to appointing his son Ayyūb, and he waited for calamities to befall his brother. Ayyūb died during the lifetime of his father, so Sulaymān pledged allegiance to his paternal cousin ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, that he would be the caliph after him. And excellent was what he did.
