Translation
✧ The beginning of the matter of the sabʿ in the Umayyad Mosque Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd said, with his chain of transmission, from Ḥassān b. ʿAṭiyya, who said: The dirāsa (communal recitation) is an innovation, introduced by Hishām b. Ismāʿīl al-Makhzūmī on his arrival before ʿAbd al-Malik. ʿAbd al-Malik kept him waiting, so he sat after the dawn prayer in the mosque of Damascus and heard a recitation. He said: "What is this?" He was told that ʿAbd al-Malik was reciting in the Green Palace. So Hishām b. Ismāʿīl recited, and ʿAbd al-Malik began to recite in the manner of Hishām. Then a mawlā of his recited in his manner, and those near him among the people of the mosque deemed it good, and they recited in his manner. Hishām b. ʿAmmār, the khaṭīb of Damascus, said, with his chain of transmission, from Khālid b. Dihqān, who said: The first to introduce recitation in the mosque of Damascus was Hishām b. Ismāʿīl b. Hishām b. al-Mughīra al-Makhzūmī, and the first to introduce recitation in Palestine was al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Jurashī. I say: This Hishām b. Ismāʿīl was governor of the Prophet's city, and he is the one who beat Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib when he refused to pledge allegiance to al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik before his father died. Then al-Walīd dismissed him from it and appointed ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz over it. Groups of the leading predecessors among the Successors in Damascus attended this sabʿ. Among them were Hishām b. Ismāʿīl al-Makhzūmī and his mawlā Rāfiʿ, and Ismāʿīl b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī al-Muhājir, who was a tutor for the children of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān and had governed Ifrīqiya for Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, along with his two sons ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and Marwān. Among the judges who attended it were Abū Idrīs ʿĀʾidh Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Khawlānī, Numayr b. Aws al-Ashʿarī, Yazīd b. Abī al-Hamdānī, Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Muḥāribī, and Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Labīd al-Asadī. Among the jurists, traditionists, and huffāẓ reciters were Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qāsim b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, mawlā of the family of Muʿāwiya, Makḥūl, Sulaymān b. Mūsā al-Ashdaq, ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAlāʾ b. Zabr, Abū Idrīs al-Aṣghar ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿIrāk, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿĀmir al-Yaḥṣubī, the brother of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir, Yaḥyā b. al-Ḥārith al-Dhimārī, ʿAbd al-Malik b. al-Nuʿmān al-Muzanī, Anas b. Unays al-ʿUdhrī, Sulaymān b. Bazīʿ the reciter, Sulaymān b. Dāwūd al-Khushanī, Namrān or Hazzān b. Ḥakīm al-Qurashī, Muḥammad b. Khālid b. Abī Ẓabyān al-Azdī, Yazīd b. ʿUbayda b. Abī al-Muhājir, ʿAyyāsh b. Dīnār, and others. Thus Ibn ʿAsākir listed them. He said: It has been related from some of them that he disliked their gathering and condemned it, but there is no basis for condemning it. Then he cited from the path of Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd, with his chain of transmission, from ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAlāʾ, who said: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿArzab condemning the dirāsa and saying: "I have not seen nor heard of it, and I met the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ." Ibn ʿAsākir said: Al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was governor of Damascus during the caliphate of ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.
