The story of Moses the one who spoke with Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)
قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى وَأَصْبَحَ فُؤَادُ أُمِّ مُوسَى فَارِغًا إِنْ كَادَتْ لَتُبْدِي بِهِ لَوْلَا أَنْ رَبَطْنَا عَلَى قَلْبِهَا لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَقَالَتْ لِأُخْتِهِ قُصِّيهِ فَبَصُرَتْ بِهِ عَنْ جُنُبٍ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ وَحَرَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِ الْمَرَاضِعَ مِنْ قَبْلُ فَقَالَتْ هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَى أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ يَكْفُلُونَهُ لَكُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُ نَاصِحُونَ فَرَدَدْنَاهُ إِلَى أُمِّهِ كَيْ تَقَرَّ عَيْنُهَا وَلَا تَحْزَنَ وَلِتَعْلَمَ أَنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ [ الْقَصَصِ: 10 - ✧ Allah the Exalted mentioned him in many scattered places of the Qur'an, and mentioned his story in multiple places, elaborated, intermediate, and abridged. Allah the Exalted said: Ṭā Sīn Mīm. These are the verses of the clear Book. We recount to you from the news of Moses and Pharaoh in truth for a people who believe. Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and made its people into factions, oppressing a party among them, slaughtering their sons and sparing their women. Indeed, he was of the corrupters. And We desired to bestow favor upon those who were oppressed in the land, and to make them leaders, and to make them the inheritors, and to establish them in the land, and to show Pharaoh and Hāmān and their soldiers from them that which they were wary of. [Al-Qaṣaṣ 1-6]. Allah the Exalted said: And We inspired to the mother of Moses, "Suckle him; then when you fear for him, cast him into the river, and do not fear, nor grieve. Indeed, We shall return him to you and make him of the messengers." Then the household of Pharaoh picked him up, that he might become to them an enemy and a grief. Indeed, Pharaoh and Hāmān and their soldiers were sinners. And the wife of Pharaoh said, "A comfort of the eye for me and for you. Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son," while they perceived not. [Al-Qaṣaṣ 7-9]. Allah the Exalted said: And the heart of the mother of Moses became empty. She was about to disclose him, had We not bound fast her heart, that she might be of the believers. And she said to his sister, "Trace him," so she watched him from a distance while they perceived not. And We had forbidden to him foster mothers before, so she said, "Shall I direct you to a household who will nurse him for you, and they will be sincere to him?" So We returned him to his mother, that her eye might be comforted and she not grieve, and that she might know that the promise of Allah is true; but most of them do not know. [Al-Qaṣaṣ: 10-13]. And when he reached his full strength and matured, We gave him judgment and knowledge. And thus do We reward the doers of good. And he entered the city at a time of heedlessness of its people and found therein two men fighting, this one of his faction and that one of his enemy. So the one of his faction sought his aid against the one of his enemy, and Moses struck him and finished him. He said, "This is of the work of Satan; indeed, he is a clear misleading enemy." He said, "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me," and He forgave him. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful. He said, "My Lord, by what You have favored me, I will never be a supporter of the criminals." [Al-Qaṣaṣ: 14-17]. Then he became in the city fearful and vigilant, and behold, the one who sought his aid yesterday cried out to him. Moses said to him, "Indeed, you are a clear deviate." Then when he intended to strike the one who was an enemy to them both, he said, "O Moses, do you intend to kill me as you killed a soul yesterday? You intend only to be a tyrant in the land, and you do not intend to be of the reformers." And a man came from the farthest end of the city, hastening; he said, "O Moses, indeed the chiefs are conspiring concerning you to kill you, so leave; indeed, I am to you of the sincere advisers." So he left it fearful and vigilant; he said, "My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people." [Al-Qaṣaṣ 18-21]. And a man came from the farthest end of the city, hastening—coming to him quickly, compassionate toward him—and said: "O Moses, indeed the chiefs are conspiring concerning you to kill you, so leave"—that is, from this town—"indeed, I am to you of the sincere advisers"—that is, in what I say to you. Allah the Exalted said: So he left it fearful and vigilant—that is, so he left the city of Miṣr immediately, on his face, not guided to any road nor knowing it, saying: My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people. And when he turned his face toward Midian, he said, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the sound path. And when he arrived at the water of Midian, he found there a community of people watering, and found besides them two women keeping back. He said, 'What is your matter?' They said, 'We do not water until the shepherds dispatch; and our father is an old man, aged.' So he watered for them, then turned away to the shade and said, 'My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You send down to me, in need.'" [Al-Qaṣaṣ: 22-24]. Then one of them came to him, walking with shyness; she said, "Indeed, my father invites you, that he may recompense you the reward for what you watered for us." So when he came to him and recounted to him the story, he said, "Do not fear; you have been saved from the wrongdoing people." One of them said, "O my father, hire him; indeed, the best whom you hire is the strong, the trustworthy." He said, "Indeed, I intend to marry you to one of these two daughters of mine, on condition that you serve me eight years; and if you complete ten, it is of your own accord, and I do not intend to make it difficult for you. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the righteous." He said, "That is between me and you; whichever of the two terms I fulfill, there shall be no transgression upon me, and Allah is witness over what we say." [Al-Qaṣaṣ: 25-28]. Then when Moses fulfilled the term and traveled with his family, he perceived from the side of the mount a fire. He said to his family, "Stay; indeed, I perceive a fire. Perhaps I may bring you from it some news or a firebrand from the fire, that you may warm yourselves." So when he came to it, he was called from the right side of the valley, in the blessed spot, from the tree: "O Moses, indeed I am Allah, Lord of the worlds. And cast down your staff." So when he saw it quivering as if it were a serpent, he turned his back and did not retrace. "O Moses, come forward and do not fear; indeed, you are of those who are secure. Insert your hand into your bosom; it will come forth white without evil, and draw to you your wing from fear. So these are two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his chiefs; indeed, they were a transgressing people." [Al-Qaṣaṣ: 29-32]. He said, "My Lord, indeed I killed a soul among them, and I fear that they will kill me. And my brother Aaron, he is more eloquent in tongue than I, so send him with me as a support, confirming me; indeed, I fear that they will deny me." He said, "We shall strengthen your arm with your brother, and We shall make for you both an authority, so they shall not reach you. With Our signs, you two and those who follow you shall prevail." [Al-Qaṣaṣ: 33-35]. And has the account of Moses come to you, when he saw a fire and said to his family, "Stay; indeed, I perceive a fire. Perhaps I may bring you from it a brand, or find upon the fire some guidance." [Ṭā Hā: 9-10]. Moses said to his family, "Indeed, I perceive a fire; I will bring you from it some news, or I will bring you a flaming brand, that you may warm yourselves." [Al-Naml: 7]. So when he came to it, he was called from the right side of the valley in the blessed spot, from the tree: "O Moses, indeed I am Allah, Lord of the worlds." And He the Exalted said in "Al-Naml": So when he came to it, it was called: "Blessed is he who is in the fire and he who is around it, and glory be to Allah, Lord of the worlds." [Al-Naml: 8]. "O Moses, indeed it is I, Allah, the Mighty, the Wise." [Al-Naml: 9]. And He said in Sūrah "Ṭā Hā": So when he came to it, it was called: "O Moses, indeed I am your Lord, so remove your sandals; indeed, you are in the sacred valley of Ṭuwā. And I have chosen you, so listen to what is inspired. Indeed, I am Allah; there is no deity but Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance. Indeed, the Hour is coming; I almost conceal it, that every soul may be recompensed for what it strives. So let not him who does not believe in it and follows his desire turn you away from it, lest you perish." [Ṭā Hā: 11-16]. And We gave Moses nine clear signs, so ask the Children of Israel when he came to them, and Pharaoh said to him, "Indeed, I think you, O Moses, are bewitched." He said, "You know that none sent down these except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as insights; and indeed, I think you, O Pharaoh, are doomed." [Al-Isrāʾ: 101-102]. And these are the ones elaborated in Sūrah "Al-Aʿrāf" in His saying: And We seized the household of Pharaoh with years and a decrease in fruits, that perhaps they might take heed. Then when good came to them, they said, "This is ours," and if an evil befell them, they took omens from Moses and those with him. Verily, their omen is with Allah, but most of them do not know. And they said, "Whatever sign you bring to us to bewitch us with it, we will not be believers in you." So We sent upon them the flood, the locusts, the lice, the frogs, and the blood as distinct signs, but they were arrogant and were a criminal people. [Al-Aʿrāf: 130-133]. The story of the Prophet of Allah, Moses, ﷺ, in Sūrah Ṭā Hā: Go to Pharaoh; indeed, he has transgressed. He said, "My Lord, expand for me my chest, and ease for me my affair, and loosen the knot from my tongue, that they may understand my speech." [Ṭā Hā: 24-28]. "And appoint for me a minister from my family, Aaron, my brother. Strengthen with him my back, and associate him with me in my affair, that we may glorify You much and remember You much. Indeed, You are ever seeing us." He said, "You have been granted your request, O Moses." [Ṭā Hā: 29-36]. And We granted him from Our mercy his brother Aaron, a prophet. [Maryam: 53]. And when your Lord called Moses: "Go to the wrongdoing people, the people of Pharaoh; will they not fear?" He said, "My Lord, indeed I fear that they will deny me, and my chest constricts, and my tongue will not loosen, so send to Aaron. And they have against me a sin, so I fear that they will kill me." He said, "No; so go both of you with Our signs; indeed, We are with you, listening. Then go to Pharaoh and say, 'Indeed, we are the messenger of the Lord of the worlds: Send with us the Children of Israel.'" He said, "Did we not raise you among us as a child, and you remained among us years of your life? And you did your deed which you did, and you are of the ungrateful." [Al-Shuʿarāʾ: 10-19]. Pharaoh said, "And what is the Lord of the worlds?" He said, "The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you are certain." He said to those around him, "Do you not hear?" He said, "Your Lord and the Lord of your first fathers." He said, "Indeed, your messenger who was sent to you is mad." He said, "The Lord of the east and the west and what is between them, if you understand." [Al-Shuʿarāʾ: 23-28]. So he gathered and called out, and said, "I am your lord, the highest." [Al-Nāziʿāt: 23-24]. And he said, "O chiefs, I know not for you any god other than me." [Al-Qaṣaṣ: 38]. He said, "If you take a god other than me, I will surely make you of the imprisoned." He said, "Even if I bring you something clear?" He said, "Then bring it, if you are of the truthful." So he cast his staff, and behold, it was a manifest serpent. And he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to the beholders. [Al-Shuʿarāʾ: 29-33]. And He the Exalted said in Sūrah "Ṭā Hā": So you remained years among the people of Midian, then you came according to decree, O Moses. And I fashioned you for Myself. Go, you and your brother, with My signs, and do not slacken in My remembrance. Go both of you to Pharaoh; indeed, he has transgressed. And speak to him a gentle word, perhaps he may take heed or fear. They both said, "Our Lord, indeed we fear that he will hasten against us or transgress." He said, "Do not fear; indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see." [Ṭā Hā: 40-46]. Do not fear; indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see, as He said in the other verse: Indeed, We are with you, listening. So go to him and say, 'Indeed, we are the messengers of your Lord, so send with us the Children of Israel and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord, and ﷺ who follows guidance. Indeed, it has been revealed to us that the punishment is upon him who denies and turns away.'" [Ṭā Hā: 47-48]. He said, "Then who is your Lord, O Moses?" He said, "Our Lord is He who gave every thing its form, then guided." He said, "Then what of the former generations?" He said, "Its knowledge is with my Lord in a record; my Lord neither errs nor forgets. He who made for you the earth a cradle and threaded for you therein paths, and sent down from the sky water, and brought forth thereby pairs of varied plants. Eat and pasture your cattle; indeed, in that are signs for people of discernment. From it We created you, and into it We shall return you, and from it We shall bring you forth another time." [Ṭā Hā: 49-55]. He the Exalted says, informing about Pharaoh that he denied the affirmation of the Maker, the Exalted, saying: Then who is your Lord, O Moses? He said, "Our Lord is He who gave every thing its form, then guided. And We showed him all of Our signs, but he denied and refused. He said, "Have you come to us to expel us from our land with your magic, O Moses? Then we will surely bring you magic like it, so make between us and you an appointment, which neither we nor you shall fail, in an equal place." He said, "Your appointment is the day of ornament, and that the people be gathered in the forenoon." [Ṭā Hā: 56-59]. So Pharaoh turned away, then gathered his plot, then came. Moses said to them, "Woe to you, do not fabricate against Allah a lie, lest He destroy you with a punishment; and he who fabricates has failed." So they disputed their affair among themselves and kept secret their private counsel. They said, "Indeed, these two are sorcerers who intend to expel you from your land with their magic and to take away your ideal way. So consolidate your plot, then come in ranks; and he who prevails today has succeeded." [Ṭā Hā: 60-64]. And Satan promises them only delusion. They said: “O Moses, either you throw, or we shall be the first to throw.” He said: “Nay, throw you!” Then behold, their ropes and their staffs, by their magic, appeared to him as though they moved fast. So Moses conceived in his mind a sort of fear. We (Allah) said: “Fear not! Surely, you will have the upper hand. And throw that which is in your right hand! It will swallow up that which they have made. That which they have made is only a magician's trick, and the magician will never be successful, to whatever amount (of skill) he may attain.” [Taha: 65–69]. So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them, and they displayed a great magic. [Al-A'raf: 116] “Fear not! Surely, you will have the upper hand. And throw that which is in your right hand! It will swallow up that which they have made. That which they have made is only a magician's trick, and the magician will never be successful, to whatever amount (of skill) he may attain.” Then Moses threw his staff, and said: “What you have brought is sorcery; surely, Allah will make it of no effect. Verily, Allah does not set right the work of the corrupters. And Allah will establish and make apparent the truth by His Words, however much the criminals may hate it.” [Yunus: 81–82]. And the Almighty said: “Then Moses threw his staff, and behold, it swallowed up all the falsehoods which they had invented.” [Ash-Shu'ara: 45]. Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect. So they were defeated there and then, and were returned disgraced. And the sorcerers fell down prostrate. They said: “We believe in the Lord of the worlds, the Lord of Moses and Aaron.” [Al-A'raf: 118–122]. So the sorcerers fell down prostrate. They said: “We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses.” He (Pharaoh) said: “Have you believed in him before I give you permission? Surely, he is your chief, who has taught you magic. So I will certainly cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will certainly crucify you on the trunks of date-palms, and you shall certainly know which of us can give the severe and more lasting punishment.” They said: “We prefer you not over what have come to us of the clear signs and to Him Who created us. So decree whatever you desire to decree, for you can only decree (regarding) this life of the world. We believe in our Lord, that He may forgive us our sins, and the magic to which you did compel us. And Allah is better and more lasting. Verily, whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal, then surely, for him is Hell, wherein he will neither die nor live. But whoever comes to Him as a believer, and has done righteous deeds, for such are the high ranks, Gardens of Eden beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. Such is the reward of those who purify themselves.” Then after them We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they wrongfully rejected them. So see how was the end of the corrupters. And Moses said: “O Pharaoh! Verily, I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds. It is incumbent upon me to say nothing concerning Allah but the truth. Indeed I have come unto you from your Lord with a clear proof. So let the Children of Israel go along with me.” He (Pharaoh) said: “If you have come with a sign, show it forth, if you are one of the truthful.” Then he threw his staff, and behold, it was a serpent, manifest. And he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to the beholders. The chiefs of the people of Pharaoh said: “This is indeed a well-versed sorcerer. He wants to drive you out of your land, so what do you advise?” They said: “Put him off and his brother, and send callers to the cities to bring up to you every well-versed sorcerer.” And so the sorcerers came to Pharaoh. They said: “Indeed there will be a reward for us if we are the victors.” He said: “Yes, and moreover you will be of those brought near.” They said: “O Moses, either you throw, or we shall be the ones to throw.” He said: “Throw.” So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them, and they displayed a great magic. And We revealed to Moses: “Throw your staff.” And behold, it swallowed up all that they had falsely invented. Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect. So they were defeated there and then, and were returned disgraced. And the sorcerers fell down prostrate. They said: “We believe in the Lord of the worlds, the Lord of Moses and Aaron.” Pharaoh said: “Have you believed in him before I give you permission? Surely, this is a plot which you have plotted in the city to drive out its people, but you shall come to know. I will certainly cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then I will certainly crucify you all.” They said: “Indeed, to our Lord we are returning. And you take vengeance on us only because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour out on us patience, and cause us to die as Muslims.” [Al-A'raf: 103–126]. And the Almighty said in Surah Yunus: “Then after them We sent Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his chiefs with Our signs, but they behaved arrogantly and were a criminal people. So when the truth came to them from Us, they said: ‘This is indeed clear magic.’ Moses said: ‘Do you say of the truth when it has come to you: Is this magic? But the magicians will never be successful.’ They said: ‘Have you come to us to turn us away from that which we found our fathers following, and that you two may have greatness in the land? We are not going to believe in you two.’ And Pharaoh said: ‘Bring to me every well-versed sorcerer.’ So when the sorcerers came, Moses said to them: ‘Throw whatever you have to throw.’ Then when they threw, Moses said: ‘What you have brought is sorcery; surely, Allah will make it of no effect. Verily, Allah does not set right the work of the corrupters. And Allah will establish and make apparent the truth by His Words, however much the criminals may hate it.’” [Yunus: 75–82]. The story of Moses ﷺ in Sūrat al-Shuʿarāʾ. Allah, Exalted is He, said in Sūrat al-Shuʿarāʾ: "He said: 'If you take a god other than me, I will surely place you among the imprisoned.' He said: 'Even if I bring you something clear?' He said: 'Then bring it, if you are truthful.' So he cast his staff, and behold, it was a clear serpent. And he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to the onlookers. He said to the chiefs around him: 'Indeed, this is a knowledgeable magician. He wants to drive you out of your land by his magic, so what do you command?' They said: 'Put him and his brother off, and send into the cities gatherers, who will bring you every knowledgeable magician.' So the magicians were assembled for the appointment of a known day. And it was said to the people: 'Will you assemble? Perhaps we will follow the magicians if they are the victors.' So when the magicians came, they said to Pharaoh: 'Will there indeed be a reward for us if we are the victors?' He said: 'Yes, and indeed you will then be among those brought near.' Moses said to them: 'Cast what you will cast.' So they cast their ropes and staffs and said: 'By the might of Pharaoh, we shall indeed be the victors.' Then Moses cast his staff, and behold, it swallowed what they were falsely fabricating. So the magicians were cast down in prostration. They said: 'We believe in the Lord of the worlds, the Lord of Moses and Aaron.' He said: 'You have believed in him before I give you permission. Indeed, he is your chief who taught you magic. So you will surely know. I will surely cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all.' They said: 'No harm; indeed, to our Lord we will return. Indeed, we hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, since we were the first of the believers' [al-Shuʿarāʾ: 29–51]. Allah, Exalted is He, said after the stories that preceded in Sūrat al-Aʿrāf: "And the chiefs of Pharaoh's people said: 'Will you leave Moses and his people to cause corruption in the land and to abandon you and your gods?' He said: 'We will kill their sons and keep their women alive, and indeed we are above them, overpowering.' Moses said to his people: 'Seek help from Allah and be patient. Indeed, the earth belongs to Allah; He grants it as inheritance to whom He wills among His servants, and the outcome is for the righteous.' They said: 'We were harmed before you came to us and after you came to us.' He said: 'Perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors in the land, so that He may see how you act' [al-Aʿrāf: 127–129]. And Moses said: 'O my people, if you have believed in Allah, then upon Him rely, if you are Muslims.' Then they said: 'Upon Allah we rely. Our Lord, do not make us a trial for the wrongdoing people, and save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people' [Yūnus: 84–86]. Allah, Exalted is He, said in Sūrat Ḥā Mīm al-Muʾmin: "And indeed, We sent Moses with Our signs and a clear authority, to Pharaoh, Hāmān, and Qārūn, but they said: 'A magician, a liar' [Ghāfir: 23–24]. So when he brought them the truth from Us, they said: 'Kill the sons of those who believed with him and keep their women alive.' But the plot of the disbelievers is only in error [Ghāfir: 25]. And Moses said: 'Indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant person who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning' [Ghāfir: 27]. And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh, who concealed his faith, said: 'Will you kill a man because he says: My Lord is Allah, when he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? And if he is a liar, then upon him is his lie; and if he is truthful, some of what he promises you will strike you. Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is extravagant and a liar. O my people, yours is the sovereignty today, dominant in the land, so who will save us from the might of Allah if it comes to us?' Pharaoh said: 'I show you only what I see, and I guide you only to the path of rightness' [Ghāfir: 28–29]. And Moses said: 'Our Lord, indeed You have given Pharaoh and his chiefs splendor and wealth in the life of this world. Our Lord, so that they may lead astray from Your path. Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they do not believe until they see the painful punishment.' He said: 'Your supplication has been answered, so remain upright and do not follow the path of those who do not know' [Yūnus: 88–89]. Allah, Exalted is He, said: "And We inspired to Moses: 'Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued.' Then Pharaoh sent into the cities gatherers: 'Indeed, these are a small band, and indeed they are enraging us, and indeed we are all on guard.' So We expelled them from gardens and springs, and treasures and a noble station. Thus it was, and We made the Children of Israel inherit them. Then they pursued them at sunrise. When the two groups saw each other, the companions of Moses said: 'Indeed, we are caught.' He said: 'No; indeed, my Lord is with me, He will guide me.' Then We inspired to Moses: 'Strike the sea with your staff.' So it parted, and each part was like a great mountain. And We brought near there the others. And We saved Moses and those with him, all together. Then We drowned the others. Indeed, in that is a sign, but most of them were not believers. And indeed, your Lord, He is the Mighty, the Merciful [al-Shuʿarāʾ: 52–68]. And indeed, We tested before them the people of Pharaoh, and a noble messenger came to them: 'Deliver to me the servants of Allah; indeed, I am a trustworthy messenger to you. And do not exalt yourselves against Allah; indeed, I come to you with a clear authority. And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord from your stoning me. And if you do not believe me, then leave me alone.' So he called upon his Lord: 'Indeed, these are a criminal people.' 'So travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued. And leave the sea still; indeed, they are a drowned army.' How many gardens and springs, and crops and a noble station, and comfort in which they used to take delight did they leave behind? Thus it was, and We made another people inherit them. So neither heaven nor earth wept for them, and they were not granted respite. And indeed, We saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment, from Pharaoh; indeed, he was haughty, among the extravagant. And indeed, We chose them, knowingly, over the worlds. And We gave them signs in which there was a clear trial [al-Dukhān: 17–33]. Allah, Exalted is He, said: "And We saved Moses and those with him, all together. Then We drowned the others. Indeed, in that is a sign, but most of them were not believers. And indeed, your Lord, He is the Mighty, the Merciful." He, Exalted is He, said: "And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and aggression, until, when drowning overtook him, he said: 'I believe that there is no god except the One in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims.' 'Now? When you disobeyed before and were of the corrupters. So today We will save you in your body, that you may be a sign for those after you. And indeed, many among the people are heedless of Our signs' [Yūnus: 90–92]. So We took retribution from them and drowned them in the sea because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them. And We made the people who were considered weak inherit the eastern and western parts of the land which We blessed. And the good word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because they were patient. And We destroyed what Pharaoh and his people had made and what they had constructed. And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came upon a people devoted to idols of theirs. They said: 'O Moses, make for us a god as they have gods.' He said: 'Indeed, you are a people who are ignorant. Indeed, what these are upon will be destroyed, and false is what they have been doing.' He said: 'Shall I seek for you a god other than Allah, when He has favored you over the worlds?' And when We saved you from the family of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with evil torment, killing your sons and keeping your women alive; and in that was a great trial from your Lord [al-Aʿrāf: 136–141]. And when Moses said to his people: 'O my people, remember the favor of Allah upon you, when He made among you prophets and made you kings, and gave you what He did not give anyone among the worlds. O my people, enter the holy land which Allah has ordained for you, and do not turn back on your heels, lest you turn back as losers.' They said: 'O Moses, indeed there is a people of tyrants in it, and we will not enter it until they leave it. So if they leave it, then we will enter.' Two men among those who feared, upon whom Allah had bestowed favor, said: 'Enter upon them the gate; for when you enter it, you will be victorious. And upon Allah rely, if you are believers.' They said: 'O Moses, we will never enter it as long as they are in it. So go, you and your Lord, and fight; indeed, we are sitting here.' He said: 'My Lord, indeed I do not possess except myself and my brother, so distinguish between us and the defiantly disobedient people.' He said: 'Then it is forbidden to them for forty years; they will wander in the land. So do not grieve over the defiantly disobedient people' [al-Māʾidah: 20–26]. 'O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I bestowed upon you, and fulfill My covenant and I will fulfill your covenant, and fear only Me. And believe in what I have sent down, confirming what is with you, and do not be the first to disbelieve in it, and do not sell My signs for a small price, and fear only Me' [al-Baqarah: 40–41]. Until He said: "And when We saved you from the family of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with evil torment, slaughtering your sons and keeping your women alive; and in that was a great trial from your Lord. And when We parted the sea for you and saved you and drowned the family of Pharaoh while you were looking on. And when We appointed for Moses forty nights, then you took the calf after him, while you were wrongdoers. Then We pardoned you after that, so that you might be grateful. And when We gave Moses the Book and the Criterion, so that you might be guided. And when Moses said to his people: 'O my people, indeed you have wronged yourselves by taking the calf, so repent to your Creator and kill yourselves; that is better for you with your Creator.' Then He accepted your repentance; indeed, He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful. And when you said: 'O Moses, we will not believe you until we see Allah openly.' Then the thunderbolt seized you while you were looking on. Then We raised you after your death, so that you might be grateful. And We shaded you with clouds and sent down upon you manna and quails: 'Eat of the good things We have provided for you.' And they did not wrong Us, but they were wronging themselves [al-Baqarah: 49–57]. Until He said: "And when Moses asked for water for his people, We said: 'Strike the rock with your staff.' Then twelve springs gushed from it; every people knew their drinking place: 'Eat and drink of Allah's provision, and do not act corruptly in the land, spreading corruption.' And when you said: 'O Moses, we will not endure one kind of food, so call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from what the earth grows: herbs, cucumbers, garlic, lentils, and onions.' He said: 'Will you exchange what is better for what is lower? Go down to a city; for you will have what you have asked.' And humiliation and poverty were struck upon them, and they incurred anger from Allah. That was because they used to disbelieve in the signs of Allah and kill the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and used to transgress [al-Baqarah: 60–61]. The story of Moses ﷺ in Sūrat al-Aʿrāf. Allah, Exalted is He, said: "And We appointed for Moses thirty nights and completed them with ten, so the appointed time of his Lord was completed at forty nights. And Moses said to his brother Aaron: 'Take my place among my people, and set things right, and do not follow the path of the corrupters.' And when Moses came to Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said: 'My Lord, show me [Yourself], that I may look at You.' He said: 'You will not see Me, but look at the mountain; if it remains firm in its place, then you will see Me.' So when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He made it level, and Moses fell down stunned. When he recovered, he said: 'Glory be to You, I repent to You, and I am the first of the believers.' He said: 'O Moses, I have chosen you over the people with My messages and My speech, so take what I have given you and be among the grateful.' And We wrote for him on the tablets of all things, admonition and explanation of all things: 'Take them with strength and command your people to take the best of them. I will show you the abode of the defiantly disobedient. I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant in the land without right; and if they see every sign, they will not believe in it; and if they see the path of rightness, they will not take it as a path; and if they see the path of error, they will take it as a path. That is because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them. And those who deny Our signs and the meeting of the Hereafter, their deeds have become worthless; will they be recompensed except for what they used to do?' [al-Aʿrāf: 142–147]. Allah, Exalted is He, said: "And the people of Moses, after him, took from their jewelry a calf, a body with a lowing sound. Did they not see that it could not speak to them or guide them to a path? They took it, and they were wrongdoers. And when regret befell them and they saw that they had gone astray, they said: 'If our Lord does not have mercy on us and forgive us, we will surely be among the losers.' And when Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved, he said: 'How wretchedly have you succeeded me after me. Did you hasten the command of your Lord?' And he cast down the tablets and seized his brother by the head, dragging him to him. He said: 'Son of my mother, indeed the people considered me weak and almost killed me, so do not let the enemies rejoice over me and do not place me with the wrongdoing people.' He said: 'My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.' Indeed, those who took the calf will be struck by anger from their Lord and humiliation in the life of this world, and thus We recompense the fabricators. And those who did evil deeds, then repented after them and believed, indeed your Lord, after that, is Forgiving and Merciful. And when the anger subsided from Moses, he took the tablets; and in their inscription was guidance and mercy for those who fear their Lord [al-Aʿrāf: 148–154]. And Allah, exalted is He, said: "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?" He said: "They are here upon my tracks, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You might be pleased." He said: "Indeed, We have tried your people after you, and the Sāmirī has led them astray." So Moses returned to his people angry and sorrowful. He said: "O my people, did your Lord not promise you a good promise? Did the time then seem too long to you, or did you desire that anger from your Lord should descend upon you, and so you broke your promise to me?" They said: "We did not break our promise to you of our own accord, but we were made to carry burdens of the people's ornaments, and we threw them, and thus did the Sāmirī cast." Then he brought out for them a calf, a body with a lowing sound, and they said: "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot." Do they not see that it does not return to them any speech, nor does it possess for them any harm or benefit? And Aaron had said to them before: "O my people, you are only being tried by it, and indeed your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my command." They said: "We will not cease to be devoted to it until Moses returns to us." He said: "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray, from following me? Did you then disobey my command?" He said: "O son of my mother, do not seize me by my beard or by my head; indeed I feared that you would say: 'You have divided the Children of Israel and did not observe my word.'" He said: "What then is your case, O Sāmirī?" He said: "I perceived what they did not perceive, so I took a handful from the trace of the messenger and threw it, and thus my soul made it seem fair to me." He said: "Then go, for indeed in this life you will say: 'No touch,' and indeed you have an appointment which you will not fail to keep; and look at your god to which you remained devoted—we will surely burn it, then we will surely scatter it into the sea, a scattering. Your god is only Allah, besides whom there is no deity; He encompasses all things in knowledge." [Ṭā Hā: 83–98] And Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointed time. When the earthquake seized them, he said: "My Lord, had You willed, You could have destroyed them before, and me. Would You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? It is only Your trial by which You lead astray whom You will and guide whom You will. You are our Guardian, so forgive us and have mercy on us, and You are the best of forgivers. And ordain for us in this world good, and in the Hereafter; indeed we have turned to You." He said: "My punishment—I afflict with it whom I will, and My mercy encompasses all things. I will ordain it for those who fear Me and give the zakāh and those who believe in Our signs; those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find written with them in the Torah and the Gospel, who commands them what is right and forbids them what is wrong, and makes lawful for them the good things and makes unlawful for them the evil things, and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So those who believe in him, honor him, help him, and follow the light which has been sent down with him—it is they who are the successful." [Al-Aʿrāf: 155–157] The story of the cow of the Children of Israel in the Qurʾan Allah, exalted is He, said: "And when Moses said to his people: 'Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.' They said: 'Do you take us in mockery?' He said: 'I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.' They said: 'Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us what it is.' He said: 'Indeed, He says it is a cow neither old nor virgin, middling between that; so do what you are commanded.' They said: 'Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us what its color is.' He said: 'Indeed, He says it is a yellow cow, bright in color, pleasing to the beholders.' They said: 'Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us what it is; indeed, cows are ambiguous to us, and indeed we, if Allah wills, will be guided.' He said: 'Indeed, He says it is a cow not trained to plow the earth or water the tillage, sound, without blemish.' They said: 'Now you have come with the truth.' So they slaughtered it, but they almost did not do it. And when you killed a soul and disputed over it, and Allah is bringing out what you concealed. Then We said: 'Strike him with part of it.' Thus does Allah bring the dead to life and show you His signs, that perhaps you may understand." [Al-Baqarah: 67–73] The story of Moses ﷺ in Sūrat al-Kahf Allah, exalted is He, said: "And when Moses said to his servant: 'I will not cease until I reach the meeting of the two seas, or I will proceed for a long period.' When they reached the meeting between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its way into the sea, burrowing. When they had passed beyond, he said to his servant: 'Bring us our morning meal; we have indeed met with fatigue in this journey of ours.' He said: 'Did you see when we took refuge at the rock? Indeed I forgot the fish, and nothing made me forget to mention it except Satan; and it took its way into the sea, wondrously.' He said: 'That is what we were seeking.' So they returned, retracing their footsteps. Then they found one of Our servants to whom We had given mercy from Us and whom We had taught knowledge from Ourselves. Moses said to him: 'May I follow you on condition that you teach me of what you have been taught, right guidance?' He said: 'Indeed, you will never be able to have patience with me. And how can you have patience over what you do not encompass in knowledge?' He said: 'You will find me, if Allah wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in any command.' He said: 'Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I myself mention it to you.' So they set out, until when they embarked on the ship, he made a hole in it. He said: 'Have you made a hole in it to drown its people? You have done a grave thing.' He said: 'Did I not say that you would never be able to have patience with me?' He said: 'Do not take me to task for what I forgot, and do not burden me with hardship in my affair.' So they set out, until when they met a boy, he killed him. He said: 'Have you killed an innocent soul without [recompense for] a soul? You have done a terrible thing.' He said: 'Did I not tell you that you would never be able to have patience with me?' He said: 'If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion; you have received from me an excuse.' So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to host them. Then they found in it a wall about to collapse, and he set it straight. He said: 'If you had wished, you could have taken a reward for it.' He said: 'This is the parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that over which you could not have patience. As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea, and I intended to damage it, for behind them was a king seizing every ship by force. And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them with transgression and disbelief. So we intended that their Lord should replace him for them with one better in purity and closer in mercy. And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and beneath it was a treasure for them, and their father was righteous. So your Lord intended that they should reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. I did not do it of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that over which you could not have patience.'" [Al-Kahf: 60–82] The story of Qārūn in the Qurʾan Allah, exalted is He, said: "Indeed, Qārūn was of the people of Moses, and he transgressed against them. We gave him of treasures such that its keys would weigh down a band of men of strength. When his people said to him: 'Do not exult; indeed, Allah does not love those who exult. And seek, in what Allah has given you, the abode of the Hereafter, and do not forget your share of this world. And do good as Allah has done good to you, and do not seek corruption in the land; indeed, Allah does not love the corrupters.' He said: 'I was only given it on account of knowledge I possess.' Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him of generations those who were stronger than him in might and greater in accumulation? And the criminals will not be asked about their sins. Then he went out to his people in his finery. Those who desired the life of this world said: 'Oh, would that we had the like of what Qārūn has been given! Indeed, he is one of great fortune.' And those who were given knowledge said: 'Woe to you! The reward of Allah is better for him who believes and does righteous deeds, and none will receive it except the patient.' Then We caused the earth to swallow him and his dwelling. Then he had no party to help him besides Allah, and he was not of those who could defend themselves. And those who had wished for his place the day before began to say: 'Ah! It is Allah who extends provision to whom He wills of His servants and restricts it. Had Allah not been gracious to us, He would have caused the earth to swallow us. Ah! Indeed, the disbelievers do not succeed.' That is the abode of the Hereafter; We assign it to those who do not desire exaltation in the earth or corruption, and the outcome is for the righteous." [Al-Qaṣaṣ: 76–83] Allah, exalted is He, has mentioned the blame of Qārūn in more than one verse of the Qurʾan. Allah, exalted is He, said: "And We certainly sent Moses with Our signs and a clear authority to Pharaoh, Hāmān, and Qārūn, but they said: 'A lying sorcerer.'" [Ghāfir: 23–24] And He, exalted is He, said in Sūrat al-ʿAnkabūt after mentioning ʿĀd and Thamūd: "And Qārūn, Pharaoh, and Hāmān; and Moses came to them with clear proofs, but they were arrogant in the land, and they were not to outrun. Each We seized for his sin: of them were those upon whom We sent a storm of stones, of them were those seized by the cry, of them were those whom We caused the earth to swallow, and of them were those whom We drowned. And Allah would not wrong them, but they wronged themselves." [Al-ʿAnkabūt: 39–40] The story of Balʿām b. Bāʿūrāʾ, about whom Allah, exalted is He, said: "And recite to them the news of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them, so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators. And if We had willed, We could have raised him by them, but he clung to the earth and followed his desire. So his likeness is like the likeness of a dog: if you attack it, it lolls out its tongue, or if you leave it, it lolls out its tongue. That is the likeness of the people who denied Our signs. So relate the stories, that perhaps they may reflect. Evil is the likeness of the people who denied Our signs, and they wronged themselves." [Al-Aʿrāf: 175–177]
