Translation

✧ And among the notables who died in the year ninety-two: Mālik b. Aws b. al-Ḥadathān al-Naṣrī, Abū Saʿīd al-Madanī There is disagreement as to whether he was a Companion. Some said: He rode horses in the Jāhiliyyah and saw Abū Bakr. Muḥammad b. Saʿd said: He saw the Messenger of God ﷺ but did not memorize anything from him. Ibn Maʿīn, al-Bukhārī, and Abū Ḥātim denied that, saying: His companionship is not sound. And God knows best. He died in this year, and it is also said: in the year before it. So God knows best. Ṭuways the Singer His name was ʿĪsā b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū ʿAbd al-Munʿim al-Madanī, a client of the Banū Makhzūm. He was outstanding in his craft. He was tall, restless, and cross-eyed. He was inauspicious, because he was born on the day the Messenger of God ﷺ died, was weaned on the day al-Ṣiddīq died, reached puberty on the day ʿUmar was killed, married on the day ʿUthmān was killed, and had a child born to him on the day al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī was killed. It is also said: he had a child born to him on the day ʿAlī was killed. This was related by Ibn Khallikān and others. His death occurred in this year at the age of eighty-two in al-Suwaydāʾ, which is two stages from al-Madīnah. Al-Akhṭal He was an accomplished poet who surpassed his contemporaries in poetry. Anas b. Mālik Anas b. Mālik b. al-Naḍr b. Ḍamḍam b. Zayd b. Ḥarām b. Jundab b. ʿĀmir b. Ghanm b. ʿAdī b. al-Najjār: Abū Ḥamzah It is also said: Abū Thumāmah al-Anṣārī al-Najjārī, the servant and companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ. His mother was Umm Ḥarām Mulaykah bt. Milḥān b. Khālid b. Zayd b. Ḥarām, the wife of Abū Ṭalḥah Zayd b. Sahl al-Anṣārī. He narrated many ḥadīths from the Messenger of God ﷺ and reported important knowledge. He narrated from Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, Ibn Masʿūd, and others. A multitude of the Successors narrated from him. Anas said: The Messenger of God ﷺ came to al-Madīnah when I was ten years old, and he died when I was twenty years old. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī said, from his father, from Thumāmah, who said: It was said to Anas: Did you witness Badr? He said: How could I be absent from Badr, may you have no mother? Al-Anṣārī said: He witnessed it serving the Messenger of God ﷺ. Our shaykh al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Ḥajjāj al-Mizzī said: None of the authors of the military expeditions mentioned that. I say: What is apparent is that he only witnessed the expeditions after that. And God knows best. It is established that his mother brought him—and in another narration: his uncle, the husband of his mother, Abū Ṭalḥah—to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and she said: O Messenger of God, this is Anas, an intelligent servant who will serve you. She gave him to him, and he accepted him. She asked him to supplicate for him, and he said: O God, increase his wealth and his children, and admit him to Paradise. It is also established from him that he said: The Messenger of God ﷺ gave me the kunyah after a herb that I used to gather. Abū Bakr appointed him, and then ʿUmar, over the governorship of al-Baḥrayn, and they thanked him for that. It is established from him that he said: I served the Prophet ﷺ for ten years, and he never struck me, never reviled me, never frowned in my face, and never said to me about anything: Why did you not do such-and-such? It is said that the Prophet ﷺ supplicated for him, saying: O God, increase his wealth and his children, and lengthen his life. Anas ؓ was abundant in prayer, fasting, and worship. After the Prophet ﷺ, he moved and settled in al-Baṣrah, where he had four houses. He suffered harm at the hands of al-Ḥajjāj during the fitnah of Ibn al-Ashʿath. Al-Ḥajjāj suspected that he was involved in the affair and had given a legal opinion in it, so al-Ḥajjāj branded him on his neck: This is the freedman of al-Ḥajjāj. Anas complained about him, as we mentioned earlier, to ʿAbd al-Malik, who wrote to al-Ḥajjāj rebuking him. Al-Ḥajjāj became alarmed at that and made peace with Anas. Anas visited al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik during his reign—it is said in the year ninety-two—while he was building the mosque of Damascus. Makḥūl said: I saw Anas walking in the mosque of Damascus, so I went to him and asked him about ablution after a funeral. He said: There is no ablution. Al-Awzāʿī said: Ismāʿīl b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī al-Muhājir narrated to me, saying: Anas came to al-Walīd, and al-Walīd said to him: What did you hear from the Messenger of God ﷺ mentioning the Hour? He said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: You and the Hour are like these two. Al-Zuhrī said: I entered upon Anas b. Mālik in Damascus while he was weeping. I said: What makes you weep? He said: I do not recognize anything of what the Messenger of God ﷺ and his Companions were upon except this prayer, and you have done to it what you have done. In another narration: And this prayer has been neglected. He meant what the caliphs of the Banū Umayyah used to do in delaying the prayer to the end of its extended time; they persisted in delaying it, except for ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz during the days of his caliphate. From Anas, who said: My mother brought me to the Messenger of God ﷺ when I was a boy, and she said: O Messenger of God, this is Unays, so supplicate to God for him. He said: O God, increase his wealth and his children, and admit him to Paradise. He said: I have seen two of them, and I hope for the third. In another narration: Anas said: By God, my wealth is abundant, such that my palm trees and vines bear fruit twice a year, and my children and grandchildren number nearly one hundred. In another narration: My children from my loins are one hundred and six. This ḥadīth has many chains and widely spread wordings. In another narration: Anas said: My daughter Amīnah informed me that one hundred and twenty of my direct descendants had been buried by the time al-Ḥajjāj arrived. Thābit said to Anas: Did your hand touch the palm of the Messenger of God ﷺ? He said: Yes. He said: Give it to me so that I may kiss it. Muḥammad b. Saʿd said, with his chain, from al-Minhāl b. ʿAmr, who said: Anas was the keeper of the sandals of the Messenger of God ﷺ and his water vessel. Muḥammad b. Saʿd said: From al-Muthannā b. Saʿīd al-Dhāriʿ, who said: I heard Anas b. Mālik say: There is no night except that I see my beloved ﷺ in it. Then he would weep. Abū Dāwūd said, with his chain, from Anas, who said: I hope to meet the Messenger of God ﷺ and say: O Messenger of God, your little servant. Imām Aḥmad said, with his chain, from Anas, who said: I asked the Messenger of God ﷺ to intercede for me on the Day of Resurrection. He said: I will do so. I said: Where shall I seek you on the Day of Resurrection, O Prophet of God? He said: Seek me first at the Ṣirāṭ. I said: And if I do not meet you? He said: Then I am at the Mīzān. I said: And if I do not meet you at the Mīzān? He said: Then I am at the Ḥawḍ. I will not miss these three stations on the Day of Resurrection. Shuʿbah said, from Thābit, who said: Abū Hurayrah said: I have not seen anyone whose prayer more closely resembled that of the Messenger of God ﷺ than Ibn Umm Sulaym, meaning Anas b. Mālik. Anas b. Sīrīn said: He was the best of people in prayer, whether resident or traveling. Anas said: O Thābit, take from me, for I took from the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Messenger of God ﷺ took from God Almighty, and you will not find anyone more trustworthy than me. Muʿtamir b. Sulaymān said, from his father: I heard Anas say: No one remains who prayed toward both qiblahs except me. With his chain, from Abū Ḥubāb: I heard al-Jarīrī say: Anas entered iḥrām from Dhāt ʿIrq, and we did not hear him speak except in remembrance of God Almighty until he exited iḥrām. He said to me: O son of my brother, this is how iḥrām is. Ṣāliḥ b. Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf said: Anas entered upon us on Friday while we were in one of the rooms of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ conversing. He said: Enough. When the prayer was established, he said: I fear that I may have invalidated my Friday prayer by saying to you: Enough. Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said, with his chain, from Thābit, who said: I was with Anas when his steward came and said: O Abū Ḥamzah, our land is thirsty. He said: Anas stood up, performed ablution, went out to the open country, prayed two rakʿahs, then supplicated. I saw the clouds gather, and then it rained until everything was filled. When the rain stopped, Anas sent one of his household and said: See where the rain reached. He looked, and it had not gone beyond his land except a little. Imām Aḥmad said, with his chain, from Muḥammad, who said: When Anas narrated a ḥadīth from the Messenger of God ﷺ and finished it, he would say: Or as the Messenger of God ﷺ said. Al-Anṣārī said, from Ibn ʿAwn, from Muḥammad, who said: An amir sent Anas something from the fayʾ, and he said: Is it a fifth? He said: No. So he did not accept it. Al-Naḍr b. Shaddād said, from his father: Anas fell ill, and it was said to him: Shall we call a physician for you? He said: The physician made me ill. Ḥanbal b. Isḥāq said, with his chain, from ʿAlī b. Yazīd, who said: I was in the palace with al-Ḥajjāj while he was reviewing the people during the nights of Ibn al-Ashʿath. Anas b. Mālik came, and al-Ḥajjāj said: Here, O vile one, roaming in the fitnahs—once with ʿAlī, once with Ibn al-Zubayr, and once with Ibn al-Ashʿath. By the One in whose hand is the soul of al-Ḥajjāj, I will uproot you as the gum is uprooted, and strip you as the lizard is stripped. He—meaning Anas—said: Whom does the amir mean? He said: I mean you—may God make you deaf. He said: Anas said: We belong to God, and al-Ḥajjāj became occupied. So Anas left, and we followed him to al-Raḥbah. He said: Had I not remembered my children and feared for them, I would have spoken to him with words in this place of mine after which he would never have felt ashamed before me again. Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh mentioned that Anas sent to ʿAbd al-Malik complaining to him about al-Ḥajjāj, saying in his letter: I served the Messenger of God ﷺ for ten years. By God, if the Jews and Christians had found a man who served their prophet, they would have honored him. He mentioned to him the harm inflicted on him by al-Ḥajjāj. When ʿAbd al-Malik read his letter, a great matter arose in him, and he wrote to him, saying: Woe to you, I fear that no one will be set right at my hands. He mentioned to him words containing harshness, saying: When my letter reaches you, arise and go to Anas and apologize to him. The letter of ʿAbd al-Malik reached al-Ḥajjāj with harshness about that, and he resolved to go to Anas, but Ismāʿīl b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī al-Muhājir, who had brought the letter, indicated that he should not go to Anas, and advised Anas to hasten to al-Ḥajjāj to make peace. Ismāʿīl was a friend of al-Ḥajjāj. So Anas came, and al-Ḥajjāj rose to meet him and said: My likeness and your likeness are as it is said: I mean you, and hear, O neighbor woman. I wanted that no one should have any argument against me. Ibn Qutaybah said: ʿAbd al-Malik wrote to al-Ḥajjāj when he said to Anas what he said: O son of the one who tightens her vagina with a raisin stone, I have resolved to kick you with a kick that will send you hurtling into the fire of Hell. May God fight you, O small-eyed one, O small-footed one, O black-bottomed one. The meaning of his saying: al-mustafrimah with a raisin stone is: she tightens her vagina during intercourse with it. And the meaning of arkuluka is: I kick you with my foot. Aḥmad b. Ṣāliḥ al-ʿIjlī said: No one among the Companions was afflicted except two men: Muʿayqīb, who had leprosy, and Anas b. Mālik, who had vitiligo. Al-Ḥumaydī said, with his chain, from Abū Jaʿfar, who said: I saw Anas eating, and I saw him taking large morsels, and I saw severe vitiligo on him. Abū Yaʿlā said, with his chain, from Ayyūb, who said: Anas became too weak to fast, so he prepared a large bowl of tharīd and invited thirty poor people and fed them. Shuʿbah said, from Mūsā al-Sunbulānī: I said to Anas: Are you the last remaining of the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ? He said: Some Bedouin people remain, but as for his Companions, I am the last remaining. It was said to him during his illness: Shall we call a physician for you? He said: The physician made me ill. He began to say: Prompt me to say: There is no god but God, while he was dying, and he kept saying it until he passed away. He had a small stick from the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he ordered that it be buried with him. ʿUmar b. Shabbah and more than one said: He died at the age of one hundred and seven years. Imām Aḥmad said in his Musnad, with his chain, from Ḥumayd, that Anas lived one hundred years less one year. Al-Wāqidī said: He was the last of the Companions to die in al-Baṣrah, and likewise said ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī, al-Fallās, and more than one. The historians differed about the year of his death. It is said: the year ninety; it is said: ninety-one; it is said: ninety-two; and it is said: ninety-three. This latter is the well-known view, and upon it is the majority. And God knows best. Imām Aḥmad said: Abū Nuʿaym narrated to me, saying: Anas b. Mālik and Jābir b. Zayd died in the same week in the year ninety-three. Qatādah said: When Anas died, Muwarriq al-ʿIjlī said: Today half of knowledge has gone. It was said to him: How is that, O Abū al-Muʿtamir? He said: A man of the people of desires, when they opposed us in a ḥadīth from the Messenger of God ﷺ, we would say to them: Come to one who heard it from him. Ibrāhīm b. Yazīd b. Sharīk al-Taymī Ibrāhīm b. Yazīd b. Sharīk al-Taymī, of Taym al-Rabāb, called Abū Asmāʾ: He narrated from his father, al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd, and others. He was a scholar and a devoted worshipper. From al-ʿAwwām b. Ḥawshab, who said: I have never seen a man better than Ibrāhīm al-Taymī, and I never saw him raise his eyes to the sky in prayer or otherwise. I heard him say: A man wrongs me, and I feel mercy for him. From Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm, that he heard Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah say: Ibrāhīm said: I imagined myself in Paradise, eating its fruits and drinking from its rivers, and embracing its virgins. Then I imagined myself in the Fire, eating from its zaqqūm and drinking from its pus, and struggling with its chains and shackles. I said to myself: O self, what do you want? It said: To be returned to the world so that I may do righteous deeds. He said: I said: You are in the realm of wishful thinking, so act. From ʿAlī b. Muḥammad, who said: The reason for the imprisonment of Ibrāhīm al-Taymī was that al-Ḥajjāj sought Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī. The one who was searching for him came and said: I want Ibrāhīm. Ibrāhīm al-Taymī said: I am Ibrāhīm, knowing that he meant al-Nakhaʿī, and he did not deem it lawful to point him out. So he was brought to al-Ḥajjāj, and he ordered him imprisoned. In the prison there was no shade from the sun and no shelter from the cold, and every two men were in one chain. Ibrāhīm changed, and his mother came to him in prison and did not recognize him until he spoke to her. He died in prison, and al-Ḥajjāj saw someone in a dream saying: Tonight a man of the people of Paradise died. When morning came, he said: Did anyone die last night in Wāsiṭ? They said: Yes, Ibrāhīm al-Taymī. He said: A dream from the whisperings of Satan. He ordered him thrown on the garbage heap. That was in this year. Waḍḍāḥ al-Yaman: From Isḥāq b. al-Ḍayf, from Abū Mushir, who said: Waḍḍāḥ al-Yaman grew up together with Umm al-Banīn when they were both young, and he loved her and she loved him, and he could not bear to be away from her. When she reached maturity, she was veiled from him, and their tribulation grew long. Then al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik performed the pilgrimage, and her beauty and refinement were reported to him, so he married her and took her to Syria. He said: Waḍḍāḥ's reason left him because of her, and he began to waste away and grow thin. When the tribulation became prolonged for him, he went out to Syria. He used to circle the palace of al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik every day, finding no means, until one day he saw a fair-skinned slave girl. He kept at it until he became familiar with her. He said to her: 'Do you know Umm al-Banīn?' She said: 'You are asking about my mistress.' He said: 'She is my paternal cousin, and she would be pleased by my presence and my situation if you told her.' She said: 'I will tell her.' The slave girl went and told Umm al-Banīn. She said: 'Woe to you! Is he alive?' She said: 'Yes.' She said: 'Tell him to stay where he is until my messenger comes to you. I will not neglect to contrive a way for you.' She contrived until she brought him in to her in a chest. He stayed with her for a while. When she felt safe, she took him out and he sat with her; when she feared a watcher's eye, she put him in the chest. One day a jewel was given as a gift to al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik. He said to one of his servants: 'Take this jewel and go with it to Umm al-Banīn, and say to her: "This was given to the Commander of the Faithful, and he has sent it to you."' The servant entered without asking permission while Waḍḍāḥ was with her. He caught sight of him, and Umm al-Banīn did not notice, so Waḍḍāḥ hastened to the chest and entered it. The servant delivered the message to her and said to her: 'Give me one stone from this jewel.' She said: 'May you have no mother! What would you do with this?' He went out resentful of her, came to al-Walīd, and told him the news, describing to him the chest he had seen him enter. He said: 'You lie, may you have no mother.' Then al-Walīd rose quickly and entered upon her while she was in that room, and in it were chests. He came and sat upon the chest that the servant had described to him. He said to her: 'O Umm al-Banīn, give me one of these chests of yours.' She said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, they are yours and I am yours.' He said to her: 'I want only this one beneath me.' She said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, it contains something of women's affairs.' He said: 'I want only it.' She said: 'It is yours.' So he ordered it to be carried away. He called for two slaves and ordered them to dig a well. They dug until they reached water. He placed his mouth upon the chest and said: 'O chest, something has reached us about you. If it is true, then we have buried your news and obliterated your trace; and if it is false, then there is no blame upon us in burying a chest.' Then he ordered it to be thrown into the pit, and he ordered the servant to be thrown into that place above it, and the place was filled in over both of them. Umm al-Banīn used to be found in that place weeping until one day she was found there thrown face down, dead. Hishām b. Muḥammad b. al-Sāʾib narrated a similar story: that Umm al-Banīn was with Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and the story of Waḍḍāḥ al-Yaman happened to him while she was with Yazīd.
