The Year Ninety-Two
Translation
✧ The expedition to the island of Sardinia This island is in the Sea of the Romans, and it is one of the largest islands except for the island of Sicily and Crete. It is abundant in fruits. When Mūsā conquered the lands of al-Andalus, he dispatched a party of his army by sea to this island in the year ninety-two. They entered it, and the Christians took their vessels of gold and silver and cast all of them into their harbor, and they placed their wealth in a ceiling they had built for their great church beneath the first ceiling. The Muslims gained booty there beyond limit or description, and they greatly embezzled. It happened that a man among the Muslims bathed in the harbor, and his foot caught on something. He brought it out and it was a silver dish. The Muslims took all that was in it. Then a man among the Muslims entered that church and saw a dove, so he shot an arrow at it but missed, and it fell into the ceiling, and a plank broke, and dinars fell from it. They took all of it, and the Muslims increased in embezzlement. One of them would slaughter a cat, throw out what was in its belly, fill it with dinars, sew it up, and cast it on the road; when he departed he would take it. Another would place the pommel of his sword on the sheath and fill it with gold. When they boarded the sea, they heard a voice saying: 'O Allah, drown them,' and they drowned to the last. Most of the drowned were found with the dinars on their waists.
