She took hold of my hand and said: O God, store him with You as a treasure. Bear witness, O people of the mosque, that he is a freed slave for God. Then she went away, and we never saw each other again. Abū al-ʿĀliyah transmitted from Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿAlī, Ubayy, Abū Mūsā, Abū Hurayrah, and Ibn ʿAbbās. He was a learned and trustworthy man. From ʿĀṣim, who said: When more than four people sat with Abū al-ʿĀliyah, he would get up. Abū al-Khayr al-Kulāʿī al-Yazanī Marthad b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū al-Khayr al-Kulāʿī al-Yazanī: He narrated from Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī, Zayd b. Thābit, ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir, Mālik b. Hubayrah, ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, and others. He was the mufti of the people of Egypt in his time. Khālid b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān Khālid b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān: He was one of the notable men of Quraysh and counted among their great ones in generosity, eloquence, and intellect. He had occupied himself with the practice of alchemy, and so his time was wasted. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam had married his mother, Umm Khālid, because people looked to Khālid on account of his father. Marwān used to give him hope of some authority, but then he changed his mind and pledged allegiance to his two sons, ʿAbd al-Malik and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. He began to belittle Khālid until one day he insulted him and mentioned his mother with ugliness—as we have mentioned in the accounts of Marwān b. al-Ḥakam—and that was the cause of Marwān's killing. From Abū ʿUbaydah Maʿmar b. al-Muthannā, who said: ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān performed the pilgrimage, and with him performed the pilgrimage Khālid b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah. He was among the notable men of Quraysh and their scholars, and he had great standing with ʿAbd al-Malik. While he was circumambulating the House, he caught sight of Ramlah bt. al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām and fell passionately in love with her, a love that took firm hold of his heart. When ʿAbd al-Malik wanted to depart, Khālid resolved to stay behind. Suspicion fell upon ʿAbd al-Malik's heart, so he sent to him asking about his affair. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, Ramlah bt. al-Zubayr—I saw her circumambulating the House, and she has robbed me of my reason. By God, I did not reveal to you what is in me until my patience was exhausted. I offered sleep to my eye and it would not accept it, and I offered consolation to my heart and it refused it. ʿAbd al-Malik marveled long at that and said: I would not have said that passion could take captive one like you. He said: I am even more amazed at your amazement at me. I used to say that passion takes firm hold only of two kinds of people: poets and Bedouins. As for poets, they forced their hearts to think of women and love poetry, so their desire inclined toward women, and their hearts became too weak to repel passion, so they surrendered to it submissively. As for Bedouins, one of them is alone with his wife, and nothing overcomes him except his love for her, and nothing distracts him from it, so they became too weak to repel passion, and it took hold of them. The sum of my affair is that I have never seen a glance that came between me and the sanctuary and made the committing of sin seem good to me like this glance of mine. ʿAbd al-Malik smiled and said: Has all this reached you? He said: By God, this affliction did not know me before this time of mine. ʿAbd al-Malik sent to the family of al-Zubayr to ask for Ramlah's hand for Khālid. They mentioned that to her and she said: No, by God, unless he divorces his wives. So he divorced two wives who were with him, one of them from Quraysh and the other from al-Azd, and he departed with her to Syria. About her he says: Does not longing increase every night and every day for nearness to our beloved? My two friends, there is no hour in which you remember her of all time but it relieves my distress. I love all Banū al-ʿAwwām for love of her, and for her sake I have loved her maternal uncles, Kalb. The anklets of women jingle, but I do not see for Ramlah an anklet that jingles, nor a heart. Some of his enemies added to these verses: If you submit, we submit, and if you become Christian, men will draw a cross between their eyes. When he heard the verse, the one who said it said: The curse of God [upon him] and upon whoever answers him. Al-Zubayr b. Bakkār said: Ramlah bt. al-Zubayr entered upon ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. She was married to Khālid b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah. He said to her: O Ramlah, ʿUrwah deceived me about you. She said: He did not deceive you, but he counseled you. You killed Muṣʿab, my brother, so he did not trust me with you. ʿAbd al-Malik had wanted to marry her, but ʿUrwah said to him: I do not see that for you. Al-Ḥajjāj had sent to Khālid: I would not have thought you would seek marriage with the family of al-Zubayr without consulting me. How is it that you sought marriage with a people who are not your equals? They are the ones who contended with your father for the caliphate and accused him of every ugly thing. He said to his messenger: Go back and tell him: I would not have thought that matters had reached such a point with you that I must consult you about seeking women in marriage. As for your saying that they contended with your father and testified against him with ugliness, they are Quraysh who contend with one another, but when God establishes the truth in its place, they show mutual affection and mercy. As for your saying: They are not equals for you. May God make you ugly, O Ḥajjāj, how little you know of the lineages of Quraysh! Is al-ʿAwwām an equal of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim, so that he married Ṣafiyyah, and the Messenger of God ﷺ married Khadījah, and yet you do not consider them equals of Abū Sufyān? When al-Ḥajjāj came to ʿAbd al-Malik, he passed by Khālid. A man said to him: Who is this? Khālid said, as if mocking him: This is ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ. Al-Ḥajjāj returned to him and said: I am not ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, but I am the son of the nobles of Thaqīf and the noble women of Quraysh. I have struck with this sword of mine more than a hundred thousand, all of whom testify that your father, you, and your grandfather are among the people of the Fire. Then I received no gratitude from you for that. It is said that his death was in this year, and it is said in the year eighty-four, and it is said he died in the year eighty-two. The correct view is the first.
