✧ ʿAbd Allāh b. Thaʿlabah b. Ṣuʿayr In it, among the notable deaths: ʿAbd Allāh b. Thaʿlabah b. Ṣuʿayr, one of the Followers, al-ʿUdhrī, the poet. It has been said that he lived during the life of the Prophet ﷺ, and he wiped over his head. Al-Zuhrī used to learn genealogy from him. The governors in this year are those mentioned in the one before it. Ẓalīm, the client of ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ In it Ẓalīm, the client of ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ, died in Ifrīqiyah. (Ẓalīm: with a fatḥah on the dotted ẓāʾ, and a kasrah on the lām). Rabīʿah b. ʿAbbād al-Dīlī Rabīʿah b. ʿAbbād al-Dīlī: Among the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, he raided Ifrīqiyah with ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ in the year twenty-seven. Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir, Abū al-Zinād, Bukayr b. al-Ashajj, [and others] narrated from him. He died in Madinah during the caliphate of al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥayrīz [ʿAbd Allāh] b. Muḥayrīz, Abū Muḥayrīz: He transmitted ascriptions from Abū Saʿīd, Muʿāwiyah, and Abū Maḥdhūrah. Ismāʿīl b. Aḥmad informed us with his chain of authority from Bashīr b. Ṣāliḥ, who said: Ibn Muḥayrīz entered a shop in Dābiq wanting to buy a garment. A man said to the shopkeeper, "This is Ibn Muḥayrīz, so sell to him well." Ibn Muḥayrīz became angry and left, saying, "We buy with our wealth; we do not buy with our religion." ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah: Al-Ḥasan b. ʿUthmān said: I heard Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Walīd say, on the authority of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jābir, who said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah was alone with ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. When ʿAbd al-Malik died and the people dispersed from his grave, he stood over it and said, "You are ʿAbd al-Malik who used to promise me and so I hoped in you, and threaten me and so I feared you. You have arisen with none of your dominion with you except your two garments, and you have nothing but four cubits in a width of two cubits of earth." Then he returned to his family and devoted himself to worship until he became like a worn-out waterskin. He said: Then some of his family entered upon him and reproached him for his self-neglect and harming himself, and he said to the speaker, "I ask you about something; will you tell me the truth about it?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Tell me about your state that you are in—are you content with it for death?" He said, "By God, no." He said, "Have you resolved to move from it to another?" He said, "I have not decided on that." He said, "Do you feel safe that death will come to you in the state that you are in?" He said, "By God, no." He said, "Then no rational person remains in such a state." Then he returned to his prayer-place. ʿImrān b. Ḥiṭṭān al-Sudūsī al-Baṣrī ʿImrān b. Ḥiṭṭān al-Sudūsī al-Baṣrī: He narrated from Abū Mūsā, Ibn ʿUmar, and ʿĀʾishah. Muḥammad b. Sīrīn and Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr narrated from him. He was a poet. On the authority of Abū al-Ḥasan al-Madāʾinī, who said: ʿImrān b. Ḥiṭṭān entered upon his wife—and ʿImrān was ugly, hideous, short—and she had adorned herself, and she was a beautiful woman. When he looked at her, she increased in beauty in his eye, and he could not help but keep looking at her. She said, "What is the matter with you?" He said, "You have become, by God, beautiful." She said, "Rejoice, for I and you are in Paradise." He said, "How do you know that?" She said, "Because you were given one like me and you were thankful, and I was tested with one like you and I was patient, and the patient and the thankful are in Paradise." Madhʿūr Madhʿūr: He was among the great righteous. Muṭarrif said: "No two people love each other for God's sake but the one of them more intense in love for his companion is the better of them, and I am more intense in love for Madhʿūr, yet he is better than me—so how is this?" He said: "When the band was ordered to go out to Syria, Madhʿūr was commanded to be among them. He met me and took hold of my mount's rein, and every time I wanted to leave he prevented me. I said, 'The place is far,' and he kept detaining me. I said, 'I adjure you by God to let me go—why are you detaining me?' When I adjured him, he said a word he was trying his utmost to hide from me: 'O God, for You.' Then I knew that he was more intense in love for me than I." Yazīd b. Marthad Yazīd b. Marthad, Abū ʿUthmān al-Hamdānī: He transmitted ascriptions from Muʿādh and Abū al-Dardāʾ. He wept profusely. On the authority of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd b. Jābir, who said: I said to Yazīd b. Marthad, "Why do I not see your eyes drying of tears?" He said, "What is your question about this?" I said, "Perhaps God may benefit me by it." He said, "It is as you see." I said, "Are you like this in your private moments?" He said, "By God, it comes over me even when my food is brought near to me, and it comes between me and eating it. And it comes over me even when I have drawn near to my family, and it comes between me and what I want until my family weeps because of my weeping, and our children weep, not knowing what makes us weep, and until my wife says, 'Alas for her! What grief she has been singled out with among the women of the Muslims along with you! Life with you does not benefit me, and my eye is not soothed by what the eyes of women are soothed by with their husbands.'" I said, "O brother, what has brought you to this?" He said, "By God, O brother, if God Most High had only threatened me, should I disobey Him, with being confined in a bathhouse, I would deserve that no tear of mine should dry. So how is it when He has threatened to imprison me in the Fire?" [And it is narrated] from Suwayd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, from al-Waḍīn b. ʿAṭāʾ, who said: Al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik wanted to appoint Yazīd b. Marthad, and that reached Yazīd. So he wore a fur garment and turned it inside out, putting the leather on his back and the wool outside. He took in his hand a loaf and a bone with meat, and went out without a cloak, cap, sandals, or boots, and walked in the markets eating. It was said to al-Walīd, "Yazīd has become deranged," and he was told what he had done, so he left him alone. Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmar Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmar, Abū Sulaymān al-Laythī al-Baṣrī: He was a possessor of knowledge of the Qurʾān and Arabic. He narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās, Ibn ʿUmar, and Abū al-Aswad al-Dīlī. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Buraydah and Isḥāq b. Suwayd narrated from him. He settled in Marw and held the judgeship, and he was learned, eloquent, trustworthy. Al-Aṣmaʿī said: Yaḥyā was a judge, and a man and his wife came before him. Yaḥyā said to the man: "Have you considered, if I ask you the right of her thanks and her span, would you begin to nullify her and dole out to her?" He said: The man says to his wife, "No, by God, I do not know what my people say until a span passes." 'Nullify her' means: to invalidate her right. 'Dole out to her' means: to give her her right little by little. The allusion by thanks and span is to marriage.
